The collection contains correspondence, writings, speeches and research files of Fannie Hardy Eckstorm. The correspondence is both personal and professional and includes items from prominent people in the fields of folklore, balladry, Indian studies and Maine history. Eckstorm's journals, notebooks and research material on ballads, Indian languages and legends and Indian place names in Maine are also included. The collection also contains papers of Jonathan T. Hardy, Manly Hardy, Charlotte W. Hardy and Walter Hardy.

A collection of publications, programs, scrapbooks, photos, correspondence and other records of camps in Maine, particularly children's summer camps. The camps started in Maine by Luther and Charlotte Gulick are best represented in the collection, including information about the Camp Fire Girls. Material from other summer camps as well as from commercial hunting, fishing and wilderness lodges can also be found in the collection.

The collection contains copies of photographs of Penobscot Indian life taken in the field by Frank G. Speck around 1911, as well as copies of some photographs collected by him. Many pieces depicted now belong to the National Museum of the American Indian, George Gustav Heye Center. Heye sponsored some of Speck's work. The photographs depict individual Penobscot Indians as well as objects such as baskets, snowshoes, tools, clothing, etc.

Papers, 1773-1973, of the Greenwood family. Most of the family lived in Farmington, Maine or its environs and the majority of the papers originate from their businesses and interests in the area.

The earliest papers are from Joseph Greenwood of Dublin, NH. Joespeh was a leading citizen of Dublin, serving as Selectman, Treasurer, Town Clerk, schoolmaster, Justice of the Peace, and Representative to the First Provincial Congress of New Hampshire.

Nathaniel Greenwood, Jr., Joseph's grandson, was the first of the family to move to Farmington, Maine in 1832 with his wife, Huldah (Howe) Greenwood. Nathaniel and Huldah had ten children, …

It was copied from various collections at the American Philosophical Society Library by University of Maine history professor Liam Riordan in 2002. The majority of the collection consists of material from the collection of Frank G. Speck, including some of his correspondence with Fannie Hardy Eckstorm and others, field notes about the Penobscot Indians and their culture, and notes for his book, Penobscot Man. Daphne Merrill was born in Rockland, Maine. She received her B.A. from UMaine in 1927 and M.A. in 1937. She was a teacher of English in secondary schools and a professor of English at UMaine, Auburn. She is author of three books and past President of the Maine Federation of Business and Professional Women.

The collection is composed of research notes, scrapbooks and manuscripts for Ms. Merrill's book on Maine lakes, and some other papers concerning the American Mothers Committee, Toy Len Goon, Mother of the Year, 1953 and class materials for teaching English.
