This article traces the history of a horse, known as Gen. Knox, that became a foundation sire of several other Maine trotting horses. The horse was brought to Maine in 1859 at the age of three by Thomas S. Lang of North Vassalboro. Gen. Knox was included in the 1874 edition of Noted Maine Horses. In a letter summarizing the 1874 trotting season written to The Maine Farmer, George H. Bailey noted that Maine had 40 organized tracks in operation. Horses of the caliber of Gen. Commercial operators, both harpooners and long-liners, fish the eastern side of Brown's and George's Banks and points farther along the continental shelf. Even if hunters of the Archaic period could travel that distance, it would have …

One would think that after winning 50 games and two regular season conference crowns during the last two seasons, the University of Maine women’s basketball team would be ready for a break. Maybe the team would be content to look back at past achievements.

Perhaps the Black Bears need a rest after a successful campaign in which they won the America East Conference crown and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Or possibly, Maine might think its goals and expectations are lowered after losing two-time America East Player of the Year Heather Ernest.

A long time in the making, the Women’s Hockey East Association proudly commenced official league play in the 2002-03 season. As women’s ice hockey steadily expanded from its original status as an emerging sport to its current status as an NCAA championship sport, it became apparent that Hockey East should seriously consider sponsoring a separate league to accommodate its five member schools that had varsity programs: Boston College, Maine, New Hampshire, Northeastern, and Providence. However, little got beyond the level of discussion and conjecture in the early stages as administrators remained unsure of how to undergo the transition process. The …
