The number of students leaving four-year colleges before their sophomore year has reached a national record of 27 percent despite new programs and strategies aimed at improving student services and advising and easing the transition from high school to higher education. The troublesome retention rate sends a clear message about the role of professors in student success, says the director of the National Center for Student Aspirations at the University of Maine.

There is much hue and cry and genuine dismay over the fact that so many of Maine's high school seniors do not pursue higher education. Why is it, ask puzzled educators and policymakers, that Maine has achieved a 93 percent high school graduation rate, yet only 50 percent of those young people choose to further their education and, thus, their opportunities? The riddle has a simple answer, and contrary to popular opinion, it's neither cost nor access.
