In 1883, the Maine Board of Agriculture called for the establishment of a formal experiment station in Orono. With the support of state funds the Maine Fertilizer Control and Agricultural Experiment Station (later becoming the Maine Agricultural & Forest Experiment Station). Eventually the Station would expand its research into genetics and breeding, entomology, forestry, food, potatoes, blueberries, and dairy. Such studies have been funded by both state and federal agriculture grants.

The College of Technology provided instruction in Mining Engineering (later dropped), Agricultural Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Engineering Physics, Mechanical Engineering, and Forestry (later known as Pulp and Paper Technology). The College offered Bachelor of Science Degrees and Associate of Science Degrees. In 1973, the College was renamed the College of Engineering and Science. John Jacob Nolde was born in Reading, Pennsylvania in 1919 and died in 1988. He was a member of the faculty of the history department at the University of Maine and dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. He served the University of Maine from 1950 to 1984. He wrote numerous articles on The China cantos of Ezra Pound.

During the 1940s, the University of Maine was one of many U.S. colleges and universities to offer tuition-free summer courses under the Engineering, Sciences, and Management Defense Training Program, funded by the U.S. Office of Education.

The classes were for high school graduates not planning to attend college and were intended to train students in defense activities in order to fill urgently needed technical and scientific civilian positions just prior to and during U.S. involvement in World War II.

Walter S. "Bud" Schoenberger was born in 1920 in Pittsburgh, Pa. and died in Orono, Maine in 1998. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Pittsburgh and his doctorate from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. He was a professor of political science, specializing in international relations at the University of Maine in Orono. He authored the book, Decision of Destiny, a Political Analysis of the Decision to Use the Atomic Bomb. He retired from the University of Maine in 1989 as professor emeritus having taught for 34 years.

Clifford O.T. Wieden was the principal of the Aroostook State Normal School (later the Aroostook State Teacher's College and now the University of Maine at Presque Isle) and became its president in 1953. In the summer of 1947, Wieden taught a course at Farmington State Teachers College entitled "Sociography: A Maine State Travel Course." The course involved travel, observation and interviews as well as lectures, discussion and development of teaching units. John Hankins was born in 1905. He earned his B.A. in 1924 from the University of South Carolina, his M.A. in 1925 and his Ph.D. from Yale in 1929. He came to the University of Maine in 1956 as Head of the English Department. Hankins retired in 1970. He was Professor Emeritus in 1970.

Collection includes biographical information from the faculty index,correspondence, dramatic pieces, poems, and short stories (including some written by Hankin), articles, and speeches, newspaper clippings on a range of subjects, conference material, and various items regarding events Hankin attended celebrating William Shakespeare's birth.

Arthur E. Silver was born in 1879 at Silvers Mills, a rural neighborhood named for his grandfather in Dexter, Maine. He graduated from the University of Maine, class of 1902, with a B.S. degree. He received his doctor of engineering (an honorary degree) from the University of Maine in 1954. He was chief electrical engineer for Ebasco Services, Inc., formerly Electric Bond and Share Co. until his retirement in 1948.

Professor Katherine Ogilvie Musgrave was born February 8, 1920, in Allisona, TN. Having graduated with a B.S. in Food Nutrition from Maryville College in 1941 Musgrave would go on to earn a M.S. in Nutrition from Oklahoma State University in 1968. The following year (1969) Professor Musgrave started at the University of Maine as an instructor and assistant professor in Food and Nutrition before in 1979 earning a professorship. Professor Musgrave retired from the University of Maine in 1986 but remained active in the field of nutrition.

James Stacy Stevens, the son of Henry Francis Stevens and Emeline Heydock Stevens, was born in Lima, New York, on August 21, 1864. Stevens married Bertha E. Bowerman in 1890. He came to the University of Maine as a professor of physics in 1891, established the department of electrical engineering in 1893, and served as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences from 1905 until his retirement in 1932. Stevens Hall on the campus of the University of Maine was named in his honor in 1934. Stevens died on March 24, 1940.

Dr. Hilda M. Fife was born in Greenland, N.H., in 1903. She received her B.A. degree from Colby College and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Cornell University. She also did graduate work at Boston University and the University of Chicago. She became professor of English at the University of Maine from 1946 until retiring as professor emerita in 1969. She founded the Maine Old Cemetery Association and was active in the Kittery Maritime Museum, the Rice Public Library in Kittery, and the Maine League of Historical Societies and Museums. She died in 1990.

Irwin Bruce Douglass was born in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1904. A scholar, teacher, researcher and humorist, Douglass became a professor of chemistry at the University of Maine at Orono in 1940 and carried out a number of studies into potato starch and the chemical process (and pollution) involved in the pulp and paper industry processes. He retired in 1972 and moved to Vermont where he died in 1998.

Jane Pease was a professor of history at the University of Maine, 1969-1987 and in 1975 also taught the first Women's Studies course at the University. Together, the Peases authored Bound with Them in Chains: A Biographical History of the Antislavery Movement.
