This collection consists of materials collected by Walter and Carol Stein, two individuals interested in the history of the Cabell County, West Virginia area. The collection contains two diaries by William Dusenberry, three books, copies, transcriptions, and indexes of the two diaries, and collected research on the Dugan family and the Fannie Dugan steamboat. The 1861-1862 diary has a store ledger from July 9, 1861 to August 26, 1862 and a diary from September 23 to November 11, 1862, while the 1873 diary covers the whole year. This collection is composed of photographs taken from two albums. The first album appears to depict members of the Harris family, with the textual matter folder of materials found in that album including a page that states, “Presented to Jane/Janie Harris by her Father as a Christmas Gift, December 25th, 1886” and a newspaper clipping about Evangelist pastors speaking in Baltimore. The second album is about the Thornburg (sometimes spelled Thornburgh) family. Photographs are primarily portraits in the cabinet card format and mounted on board, with only a few group portraits. Following the American Revolution, the new United States government and its citizenry greedily cast their eyes westward across the expansive trans-Appalachian frontier. The contest between the region’s native peoples, Anglo-American westerners, and Spanish colonists for the trans-Appalachian West began long before the first shots of the Revolution were fired at Lexington & Concord. From the near perpetual regional Indian warfare to the diplomatic maneuverings of Euroamerican backcountry leaders, the struggle to control the land the Indians called the “western waters” defined borderland relations for most of the 18th century.
