Rev. Joseph T. O'Callahan 50th Anniversary Event

Invitation for a memorial event honoring Rev. Joseph T. O'Callahan, S.J. on the 50th anniversary of his death. Father O'Callahan was a professor at the College of the Holy Cross, and also served as a Navy chaplain during World War II. He was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his heroic actions aboard the USS Franklin when it was attacked during the war.

The memorial event was sponsored by The O'Callahan Society. It included a memorial Mass, wreath laying ceremony at Father O'Callahan's grave in the Jesuit cemetery and a presentation by Dr. John Satterfield.

Obituary of Rev. Joseph T. O'Callahan (May 15, 1905-March 18, 1964), a Jesuit priest who served as a chaplain in the United States Navy and as a professor at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts. Fr. O'Callahan was the first military chaplain to be awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. He died in Worcester and was buried in the Jesuit cemetery on the Holy Cross campus.

This reflection provides a biographical sketch of Rev. Joseph T. O'Callahan, S.J., a Jesuit priest who taught mathematics and physics at the College of the Holy Cross. During World War II, Fr. O'Callahan was commissioned as a chaplain in the United States Navy and was serving aboard the USS Franklin when the ship was attacked. He was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his heroic efforts following the attack, distinguishing him as the first military chaplain to receive such recognition.
