Students in Global History and U.S. History courses often spend extensive class time studying World War II. Dominicans were involved in virtually every facet of the U.S. war effort. The Dominican Studies Institute's exhibit highlights Dominican veterans who served in both the European and Pacific theaters, in multiple branches of the U.S. armed forces. These same veterans, like other people of color, faced discrimination as soldiers in the U.S. An exploration of these veterans' experiences would be memorable and valuable for secondary …

The Brooklyn College Student War Correspondence collection, consists of .75 cubic feet of documents pertaining to the challenges, hopes, fears and experiences faced by Brooklyn College soldiers during World War II. Arranged in alphabetical order, there are about 69 students whose correspondence has been preserved. Besides letters, soldiers also mailed back home picture postcards, musical compositions, and dramatized skits and whatever artistic talent they were able to produce during the hour of war. In addition to correspondence which makes up the bulk of the collection there are well preserved recruitment brochures for the Women’s Army division and “Waves” the Women’s …

Discusses the construction of and military training provided at the boot camp for the Women's Reserve, or Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service (WAVES), established in 1943 on Hunter College's Bronx campus. By the time it closed in 1946, 85,885 WAVES, 1,914 SPARS (the Women's Coast Guard Reserve), and 3,339 Marines had enrolled.
