Teaching And Testing Textual Analysis In Reacting To The Past: Thucydides And Jigsaw Method Discussion, Cary Barber
Teaching And Testing Textual Analysis In Reacting To The Past: Thucydides And Jigsaw Method Discussion, Cary Barber
Q2S Enhancing Pedagogy
The activity this work presents is designed to both strengthen and evaluate students’ ability to think critically about ancient texts within a Reacting to the Past gaming environment (specifically in the game ‘The Threshold of Democracy: Athens in 403 B.C.’). The activity is part of a preliminary set of assignments meant to improve students’ sense of the game’s historical, social, political, economic, and religious context. Moreover, the activity helps to ensure that students can incorporate texts appropriately into speeches, writings, and general gameplay.
Using the Jigsaw Method of discussion, I organize students into ‘numbered’ (I, II, III, etc.) groups of …

Q2S Enhancing Pedagogy
This is an assignment for a Freshman level course in the College of Natural Science. By the end students will have an understanding of valid research, collaboration and communication skills. Faculty that chooses to use this assignment will be preparing students for an active learning environment, and understanding a “Big Idea”, valid research, technology and communication skills.
Faculty should give an example of what is valid research. As students are completing this assignment mini deadlines (check-ins) shall be set. With the check-ins for this assignment focus on how the group will communicate the check point and the collaboration.
The focus …

Some Strategies To Improve Student Success, And Reduce Dfwi Rates In Large, Introductory U.S. History Classes., Rchard Samuelson
Q2S Enhancing Pedagogy
HIST 200 is a challenge for many students at CSUSB. For many students it is one of the first college level classes they take, and the transition to college can be difficult. In addition, reports indicate that as of 2018 roughly 40% of entering first year students in the California State University System probably need some remedial classes to get up to speed for CSU studies.
Conventionally, such classes, often with 150 students, take the form of classic large lectures and textbook classes. The trouble is that lecturing has been shown, repeatedly, to be inferior to more active approaches. …

Implementing High Impact Practices To Address Dfw Rates: Universal Design For Learning And Multiple Means Of Expression, Tiffany Jones
Q2S Enhancing Pedagogy
In attempting to deal with high DFW rates in history courses, it is important to be accessible for all students with various abilities, backgrounds, and learning styles. This paper examines Universal Design for Learning (UDL) in order help students engage better with the course. UDL focuses on three main interconnected principles, including offering students multiple means of representation to enable them various ways of acquiring information and knowledge, allowing them multiple means of demonstrating what they know, and different means of engagement to tap into learners’ interests, challenge them appropriately, and motivate them to learn. This paper discusses ways of …

Q2S Enhancing Pedagogy
DFWI Rates in my large lecture History 200 course stood at nearly 40% during the 2017-2018 AY. Reviewing literature on student success suggested that engagement both in and out of the classroom and offering increased opportunities for participation in both traditional (ie classroom setting) and non traditional (ie hybrid options) may increase grades.

Pedagogical Strategies For Student Success In Us History Survey Course, Q2s Enhancing Pedagogy Report, Marc A. Robinson
Q2S Enhancing Pedagogy
This report recounts strategies to maximize student success in an undergraduate, U.S. history survey, large lecture course (HI 201 - United States History 1877 to Present). These instructional measures were part of a larger effort to address student success, called the Q2S Enhancing Pedagogy project, at California State University San Bernardino. Moreover, this report is part of a Faculty Learning Community, “Implementing High Impact Practices to Address DFW Rates.” The pedagogical strategies described here include using Supplemental Instruction, content review coupled with low-stakes in-class quizzes, and direct communication to struggling students. The course syllabus is also included.

Addressing Dwfi Rate Through Backward And Aligned Course Design, Yvette Saavedra
Addressing Dwfi Rate Through Backward And Aligned Course Design, Yvette Saavedra
Q2S Enhancing Pedagogy
This essay reflects the measures I undertook in my large (150+ students) History 201 course at CSUSB to improve student performance and learning. Utilizing the pedagogical concepts of Backward design (Wiggins & McTighe, 2001) and Aligned curriculum design (Alfauzan & Tarachouna, 2017) I re-evaluated the course to ensure that course content, in class activities, student assessments, and teaching strategies were in line with student learning objectives (SLOs) and course aims. Designing in class activities with an explicit focus on SLOs and course aim made a significant difference in how students approached exams and developed higher order thinking skills (HOTS).

Of Primary Importance: Applying The New Literacy Guidelines, Janet Hauck, Marc Robinson
History Faculty Publications
Written by a librarian and a history professor, this article describes a primary source literacy project for students. In addition, this essay reports the project’s effectiveness in teaching undergraduates to analyze information and develop primary source literacy. The methodology employed included a research project with 24 undergraduates, along with a pre- and post-survey. The research project and student survey incorporated principles from the Guidelines for Primary Source Literacy, published in 2017 by the ACRL’s Rare Books & Manuscripts Section and the Society of American Archivists. The article offers research and practical implications for librarians and instructors interested in strategies to …

‘Heave Half A Brick At Him’: Hate Crimes And Discrimination Against Muslim Converts In Late Victorian Liverpool, Brent D. Singleton
‘Heave Half A Brick At Him’: Hate Crimes And Discrimination Against Muslim Converts In Late Victorian Liverpool, Brent D. Singleton
Library Faculty Publications & Presentations
Throughout the existence of the Liverpool Moslem Institute, 1887-1908, there were many incidents of discrimination, intimidation, violence and other acts of hate directed toward the British converts to Islam. This was particularly evident during the first decade after the group’s founding. The band of Muslims, led by Sheik Abdullah William Henry Quilliam, faced continued opposition, be it disruptions of events and religious services, or violent street fighting. This article explores the incidents of hate and discrimination, the milieu in which they occurred, and the reaction of the Muslim community. A brief comparison to the experience of the contemporaneous American Muslim …
Sheikh Abdullah Quilliam’S International Influence: America, West Africa, And Beyond, Brent D. Singleton
Sheikh Abdullah Quilliam’S International Influence: America, West Africa, And Beyond, Brent D. Singleton
Library Faculty Publications & Presentations
In the late 19th century, news concerning Abdullah Quilliam and the establishment of a community of British Muslim converts in Liverpool spread across the world, particularly among Muslims. As a well-placed Victorian convert to Islam in the heart of British Empire, Quilliam symbolized many things to Muslim communities worldwide, each group perceiving him in whatever light they needed to see him. For some Muslim converts in America he was a model, a mentor, and a mediator. For many Muslims in the British Empire, particularly West Africa, Quilliam provided a morale boost, a legitimatization for holding on to their religion …
