Martin Luther King, Jr. And His Times: A Multi-Media Script, Robert D. Rosenkranz Oct 1975

Martin Luther King, Jr. And His Times: A Multi-Media Script, Robert D. Rosenkranz

Dissertations and Theses

The objective of this thesis is to create a broad perspective of Martin Luther King, Jr. and his times by placing him and his goal of creating the "beloved community" to the test of his environment: the feeling and behavior of those people whose hearts and habits he struggled to change or direct.

In order to achieve this, this multi-media script, based in history, places King in contrasting settings. Act I finds King in Montgomery where with a great deal of support he wins over vocal southern segregationists in court. In contrast, Act II takes place in the Lawndale slums …

New Odessa, 1882-1887: United We Stand, Divided We Fall, Helen E. Blumenthal

Dissertations and Theses

The Oregon Territory and later the State of Oregon have had a well-deserved reputation for encouraging free thought and liberal ideas. By tradition, Oregon has been the scene of rugged individualism, a proving ground for ideas and movements. The commune of New Odessa was one of the lesser known attempts of a group of immigrants coming from persecution in Russian to a new way of life in America.

This thesis is a study starting with the background of Russian Jewry, the social climate in the United States and particularly Oregon which allowed for the development of communes, the story of …

Tudor Conciliar Theorists, Daniel E. Mitchel Sep 1975

Tudor Conciliar Theorists, Daniel E. Mitchel

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This thesis analyzes a variety of sources such as printed books, diplomatic correspondence, letters, and notes, from which a description of Tudor ideas in relation to proposals to hold a general council can be derived. This Tudor Conciliar Theory has a definite beginning.

Henry VIII developed a flexible foreign policy to deal with continental suggestions to hold a general council of the church. The position which he took was that the English nation was not opposed to such a gathering, but on every occasion, matters of detail were used to block English participation. While these procedural details kept Henry from …

Jorge Ubico And Guatemalan Politics In The 1920'S, Joseph A. Pitti Aug 1975

Jorge Ubico And Guatemalan Politics In The 1920'S, Joseph A. Pitti

History ETDs

Between 1840 and 1944, four men ruled Guatemala a total of seventy-five years. The last and one of the most controversial of these strong Presidents was Don Jorge Ubico y Castañeda who governed the nation from 1931 until 1944. A member of Guatemala's elite, Ubico enforced political tranquility, promoted administrative probity, substituted the prosecution of vagrancy for debt peonage, and instituted other measures which had been advocated throughout the 1920's. Indeed, without some knowledge of the preceding decades, it is impossible to understand Ubico's reign fully.

As a young military officer during the dictatorship of Estrada Cabrera, Ubico was appointed …

House Bill 1302 : An Armistice In The Fish War On The Columbia, Emery Lewellyn Albertson

Dissertations and Theses

In late Spring of 1969, shortly before the Oregon Legislative Session adjourned, House Bill No. 1302 as amended passed the last legislative hurdle and was signed by the Governor. The new statute recognized steelhead trout as a game fish and provided for an incidental catch of these fish by the commercial fishery.

HB 1302 was a turning point in a century of conflict over anadromous fish of the Columbia River. The bill served as an armistice in a long sports-commercial steelhead conflict by providing some protection for these fish from commercial fishing. However the bill held off a major shift …

The Congressional Decision To Build The Panama Canal: The Influence Of Senators John Tyler Morgan, Marcus Alonzo Hanna And Others, And The Role Of The Walker Report, Andrew Scott Merrifield

Dissertations and Theses

Throughout most of the modern history of the Western hemisphere, explorers, engineers and merchants have been interested in finding or building a waterway that would connect the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. By the early part of the sixteenth century most of these people had settled their attention on the Central American Isthmus. Several major commercial nations showed an interest in the project at one time or another, including France, Spain, Great Britain and the United States.

Serious attention to building a canal started in the late nineteenth century with two areas, southern Nicaragua and central Panama becoming the two most …

The United States Military In The Cuban Missile Crisis, Frank Joseph Wikenheiser Jul 1975

The United States Military In The Cuban Missile Crisis, Frank Joseph Wikenheiser

Dissertations and Theses

One of the most significant events in the Cold War-dominated years of the 1950's and early1960's was the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. It not only has been reputed by most authorities as a major turning point in the Soviet Union-American struggle, but it dramatically illustrated the critical dimension of thermo-nuclear weapons in international relations. In addition, and of particular interest to one directly involved, it showed that firmness in policy and proper application of military power are key factors in obtaining favorable and peaceful settlements of international disputes.

Martin Luther's Concept Of The Church : Its Implications For The Layman, William W. Dean

Dissertations and Theses

This paper is a study of the relationship between Martin Luther's theology of the church and the practical development of the religious life of the church under his leadership, as this relationship relates to the active and passive roles of the layman in the church. The thesis question is: Did Luther hold a social prejudice against the lower classes and in favor of the upper class that caused him to modify or reinterpret his concept of the church in the course of his career?

United States Acquisition Of The Spanish Borderlands: Problems And Legacy, Ralph A. Rowley

History ETDs

Between 1803 and 1854 the United States expanded its continental boundaries to include virtually all the old Spanish Borderlands, an area comprising the Floridas, Southern Louisiana, Texas and the Southwest (New Mexico, Arizona, California and parts of Nevada, Utah and Colorado). Louisiana was acquired in 1803, followed by Florida in 1819, Texas in 1845, the Southwest in 1848, and the Gadsden Strip in 1854. The period 1917-1920 has a special significance in the history of the Ukrainian nation. It witnessed a sisyphean effort on the part of the Ukrainian people to attain independent statehood. This attempt to secure sovereignity by a vital part of the former Russian Empire met with forceful opposition from within the land of the Tsars and from without. In order for Ukraine to stake her claim among the nations of the world, it was essential her that the various factions within her body politic coalesce so that strong allies could be included to support her cause.

Implications Of American Missionary Presence In 19th And 20th Century Iran, Linda Colleen Karimi May 1975

Implications Of American Missionary Presence In 19th And 20th Century Iran, Linda Colleen Karimi

Dissertations and Theses

When dealing with missionary endeavors abroad most writers tend to concentrate on the evangelical aspect. However, missionaries have played a much more extensive role than this. In the case of Iran, the evangelical impact of the missionary effort was minimal in comparison to both the medical and educational branches of their work. In spite of their original intent of revitalizing the native Christianity, it was through their educators and doctors that the missionaries had their greatest influence on 19th and 20th century Iran.

For centuries Iran had been relatively isolated from the outside world and its advances. Such conditions were …

In writing about this personage, the author proposes to reintroduce into history a man that has been forgotten by many historians. Gutierrez de Lara's accomplishments were extraordinary for the time in which he lived. Among these were a trip to Washington, made to secure aid for the Mexican independence, the capture of Bexar, the capital of Texas, and the establishment of a provisional government there. By undertaking these endeavors he achieved many firsts in the …

A History Of Mapleton, Utah To 1945, Ralph K. Harmer

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Mapleton, a small rural Utah community located on the benchlands between Hobble Creek Canyon and Spanish Fork Canyon fifty miles south of Salt Lake City, was settled in the late 1860s and early 1870s by Springvllle and Spanish Fork families who built their homes on their individual farms. These families did not follow traditional Mormon settlement patterns with a City of Zion plat as their guide; their community grew along quite different lines. Its inhabitants never heard a "call" nor did they have their land alloted to them by their church.

This has not been a recent use, but was done as far back as 1936 during the Spanish Civil War. Merchant shipping also supports the Russian Navy. This paper traces the development of the Russian Merchant Marine under the Soviet regime, and it discusses why and how this …

Northerners In The Reconstruction Of Hampton, Virginia, 1865-1870, Gladys A. Blair

History Theses & Dissertations

The 1870 census for Hampton, Virginia indicated that out of the 8,303 total population, 176 were foreign born and 672 came from states other than Virginia. A logical explanation for the presence of the large number of northerners is that they were carpetbaggers who had come South after the war to take advantage of the prostrate southerners. This paper analyzes the Yankee population in Hampton, Virginia in the period following the Civil War. It discusses the origins of the northerners, their reasons for coming to Hampton, their occupations, the Hampton political situation, and the impact the northerners made on the …

The Norman Conquest In English Historical Thought, Ann Gutting Mercer Apr 1975

The Norman Conquest In English Historical Thought, Ann Gutting Mercer

History Theses & Dissertations

Each chapter in British historiography has produced a diversity of opinion concerning the impact of the Norman Conquest (twelfth century contemporary, Tudor, Stuart, nineteenth century, twentieth century). The closer one comes to modern times the broader and more heated the controversies become. This paper discusses the appropriate works of the prominent historians from each major period. The question is asked: Was the Norman succession merely one event in the constitutional development of England or did it transform the English way of life?

An attempt is made to evaluate the effect of each of these forces on the course of revolution and its final outcome. The study is based on traditional sources and on interviews with leading figures involved in the revolution.

Reconciliation And Reunion, Myron K. Jordan Feb 1975

Reconciliation And Reunion, Myron K. Jordan

Dissertations and Theses

Throughout the period of the American Revolution, Great Britain pursued a policy of reconciliation and reunion toward its North American colonies. While this was but one of the several policy alternatives open to British leadership, it was always an element of British strategy toward the colonies from 1775 to 1783.

This thesis follows the evolution of reconciliation and reunion in the final days of crisis in 1774-1775. It seeks to define its development during the war itself, and especially during the abortive American Peace Commission of 1778. By tracing this policy from its emergence through to the peacemaking in 1782-1783, …
