While the writer was an undergraduate he spent two Summers in the Panamint mountains above Death Valley, California. Hiking with one of the few old-timers remaining in that region he noticed that "the old desert rat" would stoop occasionally to pick up certain rocks which he would examine closely. Some went into a pouch he carried. They were later crushed and "panned." If they made a "showing" in the gold-pan, the prospector would retrace his steps and arduously search for the parent vein. In similar fashion the writer has ventured upon interesting features in the life and character of the …

Literary Tendencies In The Short Story, Harper's Magazine, 1850-1870, Marguerite Leahy
English Language and Literature ETDs
The short story is a peculiarly American contribution to the field of literature. Harper's New Monthly Magazine, while at the beginning presenting stories mainly from English authors, did not refuse them from other sources, and French as well as German writers were included among the contributors.
During the first decade covered by this study, the author [of a short story] was rarely mentioned, and a great deal of research was involved to ascertain this information. After 1860 due credit was given the author in every instance. Despite their many imperfections, these early stories did form a bridge from the …

This thesis was assigned by the Department of German principally to learn through the study of the German newspapers of the day what influence the German-American population of Indiana might have had upon the election of Governor Conrad baker and also upon his whole administration as such; since Governor Baker was of German descent and the act, August 16, 1859, which provided when the German language should be taught in the common schools, also took effect when Baker was Governor of Indiana.

A Consideration Of The Qualities Which Contribute To The Effectiveness Of The Speeches Of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Joanna Givan
A Consideration Of The Qualities Which Contribute To The Effectiveness Of The Speeches Of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Joanna Givan
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
This study proposes to analyze the qualities of Franklin Delano Roosevelt's speeches as determined through a general survey of his speeches and a particular study of those of 1941.
As President Roosevelt is considered an effective speaker of the day, a consideration of those qualities of composition, delivery and audience reaction which have contributed to the effectiveness of his speeches should have value. The year 1941 was selected because it was decisive year in the destiny of our country and as such affected his speeches.
