Bowl Games, Peyton Manning, Reggie White, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
It seems to me that the parade of bowl games has become endless. It's as if there has been some creeping growth over the past several years forming bowl games in the same way kudzu expands on its own in warm humid climates. What once was the Twelve Nights of Bowl Games has turned into the National Football Coaches Bowl Game Telethon sponsored by the National Association of Insomniacs.

The Educational Roots Of Reformed Scholasticism: Dialectic And Scriptural Exegesis In The Sixteenth Century, Amy Nelson Burnett
The Educational Roots Of Reformed Scholasticism: Dialectic And Scriptural Exegesis In The Sixteenth Century, Amy Nelson Burnett
Department of History: Faculty Publications
Over the last twenty years research on later sixteenth- and seventeenth-century theology has led to a reappraisal or Protestant scholasticism and its relation to the Reformation. Earlier historians of doctrine viewed Protestant scholasticism as overly rationalistic at the expense of Reformation biblicism, heavily dependent on Aristotelian philosophy, and organized around a central doctrine such as predestination. The current consensus is that Protestant scholasticism reflected the Orthodox theologians’ deep familiarity with and commitment to the scriptural text; that if it did appropriate Aristotle, such appropriation was eclectic rather than slavish; and that the idea of a central dogma organizing all of …
Lack Of Diversity In College Sports Leadership, Richard C. Crepeau
Lack Of Diversity In College Sports Leadership, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
It was a month ago that my colleagues at the University of Central Florida in the Institute for the Study of Diversity and Ethics in Sport issued a fascinating report on the lack of diversity in leadership positions in Higher Education. One of the conclusions of the study is that this lack of diversity may contribute to the same lack of diversity in Division I Football Head Coaching positions. The conclusion seems more than likely, indeed even self-evident.

Gen. Knox, Clark P. Thompson
Gen. Knox, Clark P. Thompson
Maine History Documents
This article traces the history of a horse, known as Gen. Knox, that became a foundation sire of several other Maine trotting horses. The horse was brought to Maine in 1859 at the age of three by Thomas S. Lang of North Vassalboro. Gen. Knox was included in the 1874 edition of Noted Maine Horses. In a letter summarizing the 1874 trotting season written to The Maine Farmer, George H. Bailey noted that Maine had 40 organized tracks in operation. Horses of the caliber of Gen. Knox, along with significant enthusiasm for the sport, contributed to Maine's stellar reputation …

Iowa Physicians: Legitimacy, Institutions, And The Practice Of Medicine, Part Two: Putting Science Into Practice, 1887–1928, Susan C. Lawrence
Department of History: Faculty Publications
The second in a three-part series offering an overview of the history of medicine in Iowa from Euro-American settlement through World War II, this survey like part one, concentrates on physicians, medical institutions, public health, and state laws. Developments in these areas shaped the ways Iowans both received health care and, through legislation, tried to translate medical knowledge and values into public benefits. Such a perspective entails omissions. Physicians were by no means the only people who served the ill and injured between 1887 and 1928. Midwives, nurses, dentists, pharmacists, neighbors, relatives, itinerant healers, and nostrum purveyors all provided a …

On Sport and Society
Welcome back to the bizarre world of intercollegiate athletics. The news this week comes out of Notre Dame and several other institutions of higher learning where football coaches are fired with reckless abandon. A few weeks ago we saw the spectacle of the public humiliation of Ron Zook at the University of Florida. This week the big news is the public humiliation of Ty Willingham by the acolytes of purity at the University of Notre Dame.

Higher Education In The 1960'S: The Origins Of The University Of Massachusetts Boston, Diane D'Arrigo
American Studies Graduate Final Projects
On June 18, 1964, Governor Endicott Peabody signed the bill to create the University of Massachusetts at Boston. Just fifteen months later, in the fall of 1965, the University of Massachusetts Boston opened its doors for its first class of students. Joining the more than 1200 students were 75 faculty and 10 staff people. They were pioneers in creating an institution which held enormous hope and promise of serving its urban community at a time of major change in higher education, specifically and in society, generally.
Today, the University of Massachusetts Boston is one of five campuses that make up …

Newton, Maclaurin, And The Authority Of Mathematics, Judith V. Grabiner
Newton, Maclaurin, And The Authority Of Mathematics, Judith V. Grabiner
Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research
Sir Isaac Newton revolutionized physics and astronomy in his Principia. How did he do it? Would his method work on any area of inquiry, not only in science, but also about society and religion? We look at how some Newtonians, most notably Colin Maclaurin, combined sophisticated mathematical modeling and empirical data in what has come to be called the "Newtonian Style." We argue that this style was responsible not only for Maclaurin’s scientific success but for his ability to solve problems ranging from taxation to insurance to theology. We show how Maclaurin’s work strengthened the prestige of Newtonianism and …

Four thousand years ago, Archaic period peoples hunted swordfish in the Gulf of Maine. In addition to fauna remains, archaeologists have recovered stone representations of the distinctive sword-shaped bill, suggesting that these animals had a cultural significance that went beyond their dietary value. What archaeologists don't know is precisely where and how the fish were taken. In our own time, swordfish rarely come inshore. Commercial operators, both harpooners and long-liners, fish the eastern side of Brown's and George's Banks and points farther along the continental shelf. Even if hunters of the Archaic period could travel that distance, it would have …
Early Modern Postmodern Polities: The Narratives Of Colonial Political Development. A Review Of: The Varieties Of Political Experience In Eighteenth-Century America, Johann N. Neem
History Faculty and Staff Publications
Colonial America was a diverse place. And each voice is valuable. Historians must be sensitive to this fact. We know now that any narrative privileges certain perspectives. There are thus many narratives that can be told about the eighteenth century. But there must be a theme to unite any story. Beeman convincingly argues that historians must look beyond political ideas and ideologies to actual practices. In doing so, Beeman provides a useful and necessary caution against easy generalizations about the thirteen colonies, but we still need to construct a new synthesis to help us talk about colonial politics.

Images Of Migration And Change In The German-Language Poetry Of Galsan Tschinag, Richard Hacken
Images Of Migration And Change In The German-Language Poetry Of Galsan Tschinag, Richard Hacken
Faculty Publications
Presented March 25, 2004, at the European presentation for Migrations in Society, Culture, and the Library held in Paris. Migration in the works of Galsan Tschinag could be discussed on a number of levels. The first is an actual geographic migration documented in the published diaries of Tschinag. The next level of migration could be a linguistic migration of ideas and words from Tschinag's native Tuvan language which has no written script sometimes to Mongolian, but most often to German. The main focus is on the diverse images of migration in his German-language poetry, often illustrating transmigration of spirits between …

Who Wants A Buffalo?: South Dakota's Fenced Herds And Experiments In Management, 1901-1952, David Nesheim
Department of History: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
By 1890, the number of North American bison (Bison bison) in the United Sates was reduced to about 500 animals. At that time, a few private ranchers started small herds from remnant survivors of the hide trade. Fredrick Dupree saved nine calves on his ranch near the Moreau River in South Dakota.
Between 1901 and 1913, three fenced preserves were created in the state. James Philip, a Pierre rancher, purchased the Dupree herd in 1901. The state of South Dakota created Custer State Game Preserve in 1913. The Federal government, in concert with the American Bison Society, created the Wind …
