This collection consists of the letters, notes, and production materials collected by Joan Finke, by way of C. Robert “Bob” Jones. These materials span 1968-1981 and largely concern the activities of The Little Theatre of Savannah, Inc. but also include groups such as The Island Players of St. Simons Island, The Masquers (Armstrong State College’s theater group), Savannah’s symphony, the Georgia Theater Conference and other local groups.

This collection consists of the transcripts, original cassette tape recordings of public speeches, lectures, and oral history interviews spanning from 1962-2007. Interviews were conducted and recorded by Georgia Southern University’s Department of History and Zach S. Henderson Library Special Collections. Those interviewed are mostly locals to Bulloch County and neighboring counties. Interviewees discuss their personal and family lives, historical events they were a part of, and circumstances surrounding their successes. The public speeches and lectures originated from an assortment of sources.

Mrs. Gordon (Rosalyn Weiser, Class of 1943) lent a scrapbook highlighting Mr. Gordon's athletic career, giving the archivist permission to make photocopies of its contents before returning it to her. The scrapbook contained a letter from Dean J. Thomas Askew inviting Gordon to take exams for a tuition scholarship because of his excellent high school grades. The archivist also made copies of newspaper clippings (The Savannah Morning News, The Inkwell, 1938 and 1939) related to Gordon's years at Armstrong on the basketball and football teams. Founded by A.S. Varn Sr., the A.S. Varn & Son Crab Factory was the primary source of income and employment in the Pinpoint community. Crabs and oysters were harvested and shipped to local markets by boat or street car. The factory also provided a sense economic independence for individuals in the community. Men were tasked with catching the crabs or oysters during the season and transporting the catch to the factory. Children and women also played a role in the crabbing process. It was the children’s task to pick the back of the crabs while the women canned and deliver …

Photographs by college staff made (for the most part) after the move to the Southside campus in 1964/1965. Portraits of faculty form the largest part of the collection, also photos of: campus, buildings, students, staff, and events on campus. Especially: graduation, sports and beauty pageants. Some of the photos were published in The Geechee, Armstrong’s yearbook for 1967 and 1968, the yearbook was used to help identify the persons photographed.

Records documenting desegregation processes at Armstrong State College from 1966 to 1982. Savannah State College, the historically African-American college of Savannah, is discussed in tandem with Armstrong The records and papers include correspondence, memorandums, official documents, newspapers, pamphlets, minutes, court documents, statistics and various versions of the desegregation plan. ASC and SSC of Savannah, Georgia are most prevalent but other University System of Georgia schools are mentioned as well. Influential people include Henry Ashmore, David Tatel, George Simpson and Peter Holmes.
