The Thomas Family Papers are a valuable source of information concerning family life in Rock Hill, S.C. during the period 1920-1945. The collection includes diaries, Thomas Tours brochures, newspaper clippings speeches, financial and estate records, genealogies, menus, photographs, memorabilia and an extensive body of correspondence comprising the largest part of the collection. Dr. Roy Zachariah Thomas brought his family to Rock Hill when he assumed the position of professor of Chemistry at Winthrop College in 1914. The Pindarian Club of Rock Hill, SC was organized on February 25, 1954 as a daughter club of the Perihelion Club. The purpose of the literary club is to encourage and sustain the intellectual development of its members and to promote better citizenship, inviting therein such social factors as may contribute to this purpose. The records consist of histories, constitutions, bylaws, minutes, membership records, photographs, yearbooks, and newspaper clippings documenting the club’s history.

William Gist Finley (1895-1969) was a lawyer and solicitor of the Sixth Judicial Circuit (1930-1950) from York, SC. The William Gist Finley Papers consist of biographical data, correspondence, photographs, speeches, newspaper clippings, and other papers relating to Finley’s career and death, and to York County’s history. Includes biographical sketch of David Edward Finley, a history of York, South Carolina, York Associate Reformed Presbyterian (ARP) Church history, Bethel Presbyterian Church history, York County Bible Society records, Kings Mountain National Park, Rose Hill State Park near Union, South Carolina, and the Carolina and Northwestern Railroad.

The York County Multiethnic Heritage project, administered by Dr. Joyce Pettigrew Berman of Winthrop’s English faculty, was made possible by a $38,000 grant from the Department of Health, Education and Welfare of the U.S. government. The purpose of the project was to study the total contributions of ethnic groups to the total cultural heritage of York County School District No. 3, the York County Nature Museum and the city of Rock Hill Recreation Department. The project, which began in July 1976, and ended June 30, 1977, focused on ethnic groups in the area: Southern Appalachian, African-American and Native American. The …

The Freidheim Family Papers consist of family histories, correspondence, financial records, wills, land deeds, and newspaper clippings, relating to the Rock Hill, South Carolina family. There is much material concerning the financial affairs and estate of Arnold Freidheim and his brother, Julius Freidheim, owners of Freidheim’s Department Store, and the heirs to their estates, which included the members of the Marshall Family. Also included are the executors annual reports concerning actions taken in carrying out the terms of the Freidheim’s will and a genealogy of the John Clawson Family.
