“The Muhlenberg County [Kentucky] Heritage” was published four times a year by the Muhlenberg County Genealogical Society in Greenville, Kentucky, from 1978 to 2001. The cover title sometimes appears as “The Heritage.” The publication’s purpose was to support the society and to publish information about the genealogy, culture, and history of Muhlenberg County. A separate annual index was printed each year for volumes 1-14. Afterwards, each issue was indexed separately. Generally, the index is to surnames only.

The Colonelette
On September 22, 1949, Shirley Cupp, Irma Beisel, Frances Stuckey and Mr. Hilary Bufton Jr. met in a coffee shop in downtown Kansas City to incorporate the American Business Women’s Association (ABWA). Jean Fulkerson helped start The Kentucky Colonels Chapter on 3 June 1964 in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Twenty-six women met at Western Hills Restaurant and elected Linda Sidebottom as the first president. Besides providing professional development opportunities for local businesswomen, the Chapter gave scholarships to women furthering their education, and held social and recognition events throughout the year. After the Civil War, newly freed slaves hoped to gam the full benefits of American citizenship. In 1870, ratification of the Fifteenth Amendment led African Americans to believe that they had attailled the cherished right of suffrage. Nearly a century elapsed, however, before the proffered right became a reality. The VotingRightsActof1965 fulfilled the promise of the Fifteenth Amendment. The long road between 1870 and 1965, however, was littered with the carcasses of attempted disfranchising schemes. The states of the Deep South were not alone in their efforts to prevent enforcement of the Fifteenth Amendment or in their refusal to surrender …

The Kentucky Humanities Council is an independent, nonprofit affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities committed to providing programs and services that facilitate an understanding and appreciation of Kentucky’s cultural heritage and future. The Council’s program catalog features scholars from across the Commonwealth who make presentations on a myriad of humanities topics. Later, costumed actors, who delivered dramatic monologues about Kentucky’s famous, infamous, and composite personalities, were added.
