Evans County Centennial Celebration Collection, Zach S. Henderson Library Special Collections

Finding Aids

Spanning 1911-2014, the materials in this collection include historic photographs, maps, and manuscript materials that were acquired and created by the Evans County Centennial Celebration committee during the Centennial Celebration of Evans County. With one exception, materials span the one hundred years since the county’s founding in 1914. The Centennial Celebration committee sponsored and produced several publications about the history of Evans County. Digital materials consist of photographs, video recordings, maps and other materials about the history of Evans County and the centennial celebration

This collection consists of the personal papers of Lieutenant Leroy N. Suddath, Sr. during his service in the U.S. Army during World War I from 1917-1918. Materials include a handwritten diary and a bound book of reproduced letters from Suddath to his wife, Lucille Howle Suddath. This collection consists of personal and professional papers of Peter Zack Geer, Jr. Materials span 1923-1967 and include documents relating to Geer's law practice, his service as Executive Secretary to Governor S. Ernest Vandiver (1958-1961), and as Georgia Lt. Governor under Governor Carl Sanders (1963-1967). The subject files contain information regarding the civil rights movement, race relations in Georgia, Julian Bond, Herman Talmadge, and Jeannette Rankin. The papers also contain the law files of his father Peter Zack Geer, Sr.

Margaret Mitchell Letters To Laura Dorough Dyar, Zach S. Henderson Library Special Collections

This collection consists of a series of twenty-one letters to Laura Dorough “Mother” Dyar from Margaret Mitchell, Mitchell’s husband, John Marsh, and Mitchell’s secretary Margaret E. Baugh, dating anywhere from 1936 to 1950. Most are signed by “Peggy” Mitchell, a nickname that Margaret Mitchell went by beginning in the 1920s. One letter is handwritten and includes a handwritten envelope while the others are typed. The letters, mostly the exchange of two close friends, contain content related to Mitchell’s writing of Gone With the Wind as well as mentions of the movie. Erk Russell Oral History Interview And Performance Project, Zach S. Henderson Library Special Collections

This collection consists of the typed transcripts of interviews with the friends and acquaintances of Coach Erk Russell, whom they worked alongside during his time as the Georgia Southern Eagles football coach in the 1980s and into his retirement in the 1990s. All interviews were conducted by volunteer interviewers from the Communication Arts Department at Georgia Southern University between October 2007 and February 2008.

This collection consists of the materials created by the LeConte-Woodmanston Foundation in the planning of the LeConte-Woodmanston Plantation historic plantation experience. Materials span 1991 to 2009 and include brochures, writings about the history of the plantation and its extensive restoration, site proposals regarding the plantation and gardens, area maps, and audiovisual materials created about the grounds. Also included within the collection are photographs, both historical and modern, of the plantation and its surrounding grounds.

This collection consists of the research papers and recordings compiled by English author Michael Gray during the writing of his book on Georgia blues legend Blind Willie McTell, one of the earliest blues performers to record. Materials range from 1991 to 2010, and include recordings and transcripts of interviews with witnesses and folklorists, images of relevant census records, copies of court records, manuscript drafts, extensive correspondence, and the unissued complete recording of McTell’s last studio session in Atlanta, 1956.

This collection consists of the original diary of German-born surgeon Johann Christoph Bornemann from the early 1750s during his visit to Georgia. Also included are translations of diary excerpts, translations of letters sent from Bornemann to German officials, and a biography compiled by Gertha Reinert. Researcher annotations also appear in the translated diary and letters.

Photographs by college staff made (for the most part) after the move to the Southside campus in 1964/1965. Portraits of faculty form the largest part of the collection, also photos of: campus, buildings, students, staff, and events on campus. Especially: graduation, sports and beauty pageants. Some of the photos were published in The Geechee, Armstrong’s yearbook for 1967 and 1968, the yearbook was used to help identify the persons photographed.

This collection consists of the professional and personal papers of Cornell-trained naturalist Dr. Francis Harper. Materials span 1904-1972 and include field notebooks, correspondence, photographs, and audiovisual materials documenting the plant and animal life as well as human ecology of the Okefenokee Swamp area of South Georgia. The photographs within Series 1 show the flora, fauna, and people of the Okefenokee swamp. The photographs were taken by the Harpers while on their trips to the swamp. The minutes detail Chapter meetings from 1964-2016, though the minutes from September 1984-May 1996 are missing.

This collection consists of typescript articles on letterhead titled The Week: An Industrial, Financial, and Agricultural Review. The articles cover topics related to public utilities (especially rural electrification), agricultural diversification and reform, economic development in Georgia, and the work of the Utilities Information Committee of Georgia, an alliance between businessmen and landowners formed in 1919 to promote economic development. Most of the articles are undated but content indicates that they were written from 1926 through 1928.
