Centrifugal Forces Impacting Urbanization In The Eastern Mediterranean During Roman And Early Islamic Times, Øystein S. Labianca Mar 2024

Centrifugal Forces Impacting Urbanization In The Eastern Mediterranean During Roman And Early Islamic Times, Øystein S. Labianca

Faculty Publications

My goal with this essay is to make the existence of a distinctive Levantine cultural paradigm a lens through which to examine long-term patterns of urbanization and cultural change in the Eastern Mediterranean—focusing especially on present-day Israel, Jordan and the Palestinian territories. Inspired by the agenda and approach of global history, the essay is an attempt to highlight a number of salient features of societal formation processes in this region that set them apart from such processes in the heartlands of ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. The paradigm holds that societal formation dynamics in the Levant have been dominated more by …

Emergence Of Entrepreneurship In Transjordan During The Late Ottoman Empire, Lily D. Burke Mar 2021

Emergence Of Entrepreneurship In Transjordan During The Late Ottoman Empire, Lily D. Burke

Honors Scholars & Undergraduate Research Poster Symposium Programs

How did Ottoman policies influence the emergence of entrepreneurship among elites in Transjordan from circa 1850-1914? During the late Ottoman period, there was an economic transition from subsistence farming and herding to the development of large-scale, for-profit farms, privately owned by elites. The current study hypothesized Ottoman government policy prioritizing cash crop farming over subsistence farming and nomadic living created conditions that allowed elites in Jordan to develop entrepreneurship. To measure my dependent variable, entrepreneurship, I adapted Rostow’s Stages of Economic Development. To track my independent variable, Ottoman influence, I created a scale. From the thematic analysis of two case …

The Seventy-Weeks Prophecy Of Daniel 9:24–27 And First-Century Ad Jewish Messianic Expectation, David J. Hamstra May 2020

The Seventy-Weeks Prophecy Of Daniel 9:24–27 And First-Century Ad Jewish Messianic Expectation, David J. Hamstra

Andrews University Seminary Student Journal

For Christians who interpret the seventy weeks of Daniel 9:24–27 by correlating the coming of the messiah with the arrival of Jesus Christ, the question of whether Jesus could have been identified as the predicted messiah at the time of fulfillment is theologically significant given biblical claims of prophetic intelligibility. There is a consensus among scholars affirming the view that interpretation of the seventy-weeks prophecy led to a climate of messianic expectation among certain sectors of first-century Jewish society. This position is supported by the explicit connection of the seventy weeks to the anticipated arrival of a messiah in Melchizedek …

Eucharist As Sacrifice: A Study Into The Development Of The Eucharist As A Sacrifice Of The Believer In The First And Second Centuries, David Williams May 2020

Eucharist As Sacrifice: A Study Into The Development Of The Eucharist As A Sacrifice Of The Believer In The First And Second Centuries, David Williams

Andrews University Seminary Student Journal

The sacrifice of the believer at the Eucharist can nowhere be found in the Adventist understanding of the Lord’s Supper. However, Adventists may find value in reexamining the early church’s teachings on sacrifice. While the early church deviated from Scripture in its primary teachings on the Eucharist, they maintained the scriptural notion of the spiritual sacrifice of the worshiper— something Adventists would do well to practice. This article examines the liturgical orders and teachings of the apostolic fathers, apologists, and early liturgical orders of the first and second centuries. The author considers four major issues relating to the Eucharist as …

Adventism In East Africa: Were The Initial Mission Strategies Effective?, Christopher R. Mwashinga May 2020

Adventism In East Africa: Were The Initial Mission Strategies Effective?, Christopher R. Mwashinga

Andrews University Seminary Student Journal

The Seventh-day Adventist Church (SDA) is one of the fastest-growing Christian denominations in the world. Studies show that the SDA Church in Africa in general and East Africa, in particular, has recorded tremendous growth since it was introduced in the region in the early 1900s. This article surveys the first fifty years of the beginning and development of the SDA Church in East African (1903–1953). It focuses on the three initial mission strategies employed by early Adventist missionaries to East Africa, including education, medical care, and publishing work. Early Adventist missionaries to East Africa established educational and medical institutions alongside …

A Review Of The Historical Roots Of The Union Conference Organizational Structure In The Seventh-Day Adventist Church And Inter-Structural Accountability, Eric Louw May 2020

A Review Of The Historical Roots Of The Union Conference Organizational Structure In The Seventh-Day Adventist Church And Inter-Structural Accountability, Eric Louw

Andrews University Seminary Student Journal

Over the last few years, a debate regarding the inter-structural relationship of each level of the Seventh-day Adventist Church has grown to the point where it can be polarizing, regardless of which side of the debate one is on. This tension has likely come about, at least in part, as a response to the ongoing gender role debate, which has given rise to the emergence of an “us vs. them” mentality between those who agree and disagree with the decisions of the General Conference Sessions and its Executive Committee. This paper looks at some of the historical data related to …

Natural Law, Literary Accommodation And The Successful Social Justice Movement : Thomas Reid's Natural Law Philosophy And The Abolitionist Writings Of Olaudah Equiano And Ottobah Cugoano, Patrick Miller Apr 2020

Natural Law, Literary Accommodation And The Successful Social Justice Movement : Thomas Reid's Natural Law Philosophy And The Abolitionist Writings Of Olaudah Equiano And Ottobah Cugoano, Patrick Miller

Honors Theses

I will be discussing natural law and the abolition movement of the 18th century-specifically the works of Olaudah Equiano and Ottobah Cugoano, two freed slaves who were members of an English abolitionist society known as the Sons of Africa- and the role that Scottish philosopher Thomas Reid’s ideas of natural law played in their authorship. Natural law philosophy, based on the idea that observation of the natural world can lead to conclusions about morality, has largely been sidelined in modern conversations about ethics. However, it played an important part in one of the greatest moral struggles of western society- the …

A Tale Of Two Schools: Medical Education And California's Political Economy, Michael Weismeyer May 2016

A Tale Of Two Schools: Medical Education And California's Political Economy, Michael Weismeyer

Andrews Research Conference

This paper examines the beginnings of medical education in California and argues that the establishment of a medical school in California contributed to the growth of the state’s political economy and allowed for further development of the state. After statehood in 1850, California developed necessary infrastructure, including providing healthcare to the California populace. While there were doctors in California in the 1850s, no institution existed for educating new doctors within the state. This changed in 1859 with the founding of California’s first medical school, which was formed as the medical department of the University of the Pacific, one of California’s …

The Influence Of The Ottoman Threat On The Protestant Reformation (Reformers), Daniel Nițulescu May 2016

The Influence Of The Ottoman Threat On The Protestant Reformation (Reformers), Daniel Nițulescu

Andrews Research Conference

This paper will highlight the causality between the Ottoman’s menace and the Protestant Reformation in the XVI-th century, regarding the support, the consolidation and the direct determination of the Protestant movement. The question - ,,whom did the Turks support more: the Protestants or the Catholics?" was for a long time a realm of debate for theologians and even for historians.

More than that, the paper proposes to reveal the influence of Ottoman peril on reformer perceptions (visions about Turks). In this regard, one of its goal is to explain the permanent oscillation in Luther’s vision concerning Turk’s incursion and invasion. …

Exploring French Short Stories: Guy De Maupassant's Writing Style And Social Justice, Gielle Kuhn

Honors Theses

This project explores the connection between French author Guy de Maupassant’s pessimist writing style and his observations of 19th century French social classes. A literary analysis of two of Maupassant’s short stories, La Parure and Le Gueux, determines key elements of pessimism, naturalism, realism and an unequal class structure, which discriminates between the peasantry, the working class, and the rich bourgeois. My research aims to demonstrate evidence that Maupassant uses a pessimistic writing style to advocate for social justice.

Leo The Great On The Supremacy Of The Bishop Of Rome, Denis Kaiser Aug 2015

Leo The Great On The Supremacy Of The Bishop Of Rome, Denis Kaiser

Andrews University Seminary Student Journal

Pope Leo the Great built his rationale for the supreme authority of the bishop of Rome on an existing tradition, yet with his additions he developed a theoretical rationale for later papal claims to absolute and supreme power in the ecclesiastical and secular realms. Previous bishops and church leaders had laid increasing stress on the unique role of the Apostle Peter as the founder of the Roman churches and episcopacy, the significance of the Roman bishop as Peter’s successor, and the apostolic significance of the city and episcopacy of Rome. Yet Leo’s rationale for the absolute control and power of …

Future Views Of The Past: Models Of The Development Of The Early Church, John Reeve

Andrews University Seminary Student Journal

Models of historiography often drive the theological understanding of persons and periods in Christian history. This article evaluates eight different models of the early church period and then suggests a model that is appropriate for use in a Seventh-day Adventist Seminary. The first three models evaluated are general views of the early church by Irenaeus of Lyon, Walter Bauer and Martin Luther. Models four through eight are views found within Seventh-day Adventism, though some of them are not unique to Adventism. The ninth model, proposed by the author, is expressed colloquially for the sake of simplicity and memorability: The good …

[Book Review Of] American Protestant Theology: A Historical Sketch, By Luigi Giussani, Denis Kaiser

Faculty Publications

Many scholars in the field of American religious and theological history may never have heard the name of Luigi Giussani (1922-2005) because he spent most of his life in his home country Italy, his proficiency in English was limited to reading literacy, and the majority of his writings were not concerned with American religious history anyway. Giussani was a Catholic priest, theologian, high school teacher, professor, and founder of the international movement Comunione e Liberazione. He was closely acquainted with Pope John Paul II and the then Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger. His influence on Italian and European religious life and culture …

Peter Abelard’S Theology Of Atonement: A Multifaceted Approach And Reevaluation, Denis Kaiser Jan 2015

Peter Abelard’S Theology Of Atonement: A Multifaceted Approach And Reevaluation, Denis Kaiser

Faculty Publications

As a person trained primarily in philosophy, Peter Abelard employed an intense questioning mentality in fleshing out his theological ideas. His extreme debating style of totally deconstructing theological positions and then afterward including some of those same aspects into his own views made it easy for his religio-political enemies to take apparently heterodox statements and declare these as representative of Abelard’s entire atonement theology. However, many of his theological beliefs are supported in the New Testament and were already held by the church fathers. He frequently affirmed Christ’s substitutionary sacrifice as the ransom to redeem man. He rejected various contemporary …
