Study Looks At Maine Principals' Experiences With Challenging Behaviors In Schools, Kay Hyatt

Maine schools are encountering a variety of challenging behaviors by students and are using a number of strategies to address the problems, according to a study tapping the experiences of 33 elementary and high school principals. While the interventions are effective with most students, the serious needs and behaviors of a small group far exceed schools' ability and resources, according to researchers at the University of Maine's College of Education and Human Development.

A $10,000 grant from the Nellie Mae Fund for Education to the University of Maine Upward Bound program is helping some high-achieving, low-income students with first-year college expenses. This is the sixth year the non-profit foundation has awarded grants to support pre-collegiate research internships for Upward Bound Math/Science students during the "Bridge" year between high school and college.

Cognitive And Affective Learning In The Basic Course: Effects Of Delivery Format, Immediacy, And Communication Apprehension, Susan J. Messman, Jennifer Jones-Corley, David Mezzacappa, Deborah J. Crusan

A quasi-experimental design was used to investigate changes in learning outcomes for students enrolled in large-lecture/break-out sections versus in self-contained sections of the basic communication course.More precisely, the study explores the relationship between communication apprehension, immediacy and learning outcomes for the two class formats.Results indicate that students' cognitive learning outcomes are slightly higher in the large-lecture/break-out sections versus self-contained sections. In addition, affective learning decreases for all students from the first day of class and slightly more for students in the large-lecture/break-out sections. However, when the teacher is perceived as highly immediate, there is no difference in formats. (Contains 5 …

Robert D. Hanson, son of Gettysburg College President Henry W.A. Hanson, was interviewed on October 2, 1998 by Michael J. Birkner & David Hedrick. He discusses his father's presidency, and what it was like to grow up in Gettysburg College's White House. He also describes his experience as a student in the class of 1939--what it was like to be the son of the president as a student, fraternity life, academics, and his service in World War II.

Hall-Dale and Kennebunk high schools have been selected to participate in the 1998-99 round of a corporate-sponsored project to evaluate and strengthen the contribution of athletics to local and state educational reform efforts. Sports, Schools and Learning Results, funded by the UNUM Foundation and sponsored by the Maine Center for Coaching Education at the University of Maine, provides an intensive, year-long athletic program review, assessment and professional development process, grounded in Maine's performance-based learning standards.

In a decision that threatens to slam closed the door on thousands of CUNY undergraduates, the University's Board of Trustees voted on May 26 to eliminate remedial courses at the system's eleven senior colleges. For people interested in CLAGS — which is not involved in remedial education and is based at the Graduate Center — the new policy may not seem momentous, relevant, or even objectionable.
