Around the world, from Canada to Australia, from Latin America to the Soviet Union, in Western Europe and Japan, 57 University of Maine undergraduate and graduate students are enrolled in Study Abroad programs this fall, and four are involved in student teaching experiences abroad. More students will participate during the spring semester. Wherever they go, these students, like the 50 returned Study Abroad students currently on campus, will bring back to Maine an invaluable international perspective of the U.S.A. and the world.

Both the men's and women's teams will face challenging dual meets and championship schedules in 1990-91. The schedule begins with competition from two Canadian schools, before the Black Bears settle into the New England meets. The first semester concludes with the first North Atlantic Conference Championship, while the regular seasons will terminate at the New England Championships. The women's season carries added excitement after the team was selected to host the New Englands.

Formation of the Council is one of Lick's responses to the recommendations set forth in the Report of the Commission on Pluralism for the University of Maine System, accepted by the Board of Trustees in January 1990.

The lecture hall was abuzz as the students filed into Sandy Caron's class. They knew there would be a guest lecturer, but few were prepared for who walked through the door. At first the woman appeared shy and hesitant. Dressed in a long calico gown and bonnett, she told the students she was there to "acquaint" them with the ways of family life as she knew them - back in the 1700s.

Last year, Maine remained among the nation's college hockey elite with the team's third consecutive 30-win season and its fourth straight NCAA Tournament appearance. The Black Bears finished with a 33-11-2 overall record, and competed in the HOCKEY EAST Championship game for the fourth consecutive year.

Cover: Panthera pardus, Chui in Kiswatuli, was photographed by Dr. Linda Karbonit ar Dr. James A. Sherburne in Serengeti National Park, Tanzania. Karbonit was accompanying Sherburne who was working on the design and development of the University of Maine, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, assistance program in wildlife training and conservation education to Tanzania’s National Parks. Sherburne, who has worked in Tanzania for several years, was there most recently in 1988 and 1989 working on the parks project. He serves as the Director of International Natural Resources and Agricultural Programs at the University of Maine.
