Identität In Schwarz Und Weiß: Die Übersetzung Der Afro-Deutschen Identität In Den Werken Von May Ayim, Mia Ver Pault

Senior Theses and Projects

Many parts of our being are attached to how we identify and with whom we identify. Theoretically, how we identify is based largely on one’s own choices, but such freedom is not always the case. Unfortunately, identity is often imposed upon one by the surrounding racial and ethnic majority. Like many non-white people in a white environment, this was the case for the German poet and activist, May Ayim. May Ayim (1960-1996) was born to a white German mother and a black Ghanian father. Although Ayim spoke German, grew up in Germany, and was fully acculturated into German society, she …

The Lineage of Language: The Minds of Hamann, Benjamin, and Heidegger

Language, an essential part of human existence, is in its ubiquity almost impossible to define. This aspect of life, nearly absurd to confine into a simple definition, is crucial to the human understanding of being itself. The question of the origin of language began in the late 18th century with the German-language philosopher, Johann Georg Hamann, who criticized the Enlightenment for its reliance on reason alone. The notion that human existence, and therefore language can be grasped into a mere rational approach was similarly rejected by language philosopher Walter …

Hygiene and Horror- The Ethical Considerations of The National Socialists' Conquest for Health and the Parallels to Contemporary Considerations and Consequences;

A Scientific Humanist Perspective

Nicholas Zacharewski

It is a long-held misunderstanding that evil has exceptional origins. Time and history have proven that evil is banal. An environment of economic crisis, extreme patriotism, and social rejection have all played an essential role in creating some of the greatest atrocities known in human history. The National Socialist (Nazi) party, which controlled the German state from 1933-1945, epitomizes evil. Infamous for its crimes against humanity, however, relatively unknown otherwise, are the origins …

The Methods Of Oppression Of Women In 1800s Germany Vs. Today, Amina Taher Apr 2022

The Methods Of Oppression Of Women In 1800s Germany Vs. Today, Amina Taher

Senior Theses and Projects

Women have faced many injustices, pain, and struggles over time. This thesis focuses on the methods by which women were oppressed in 1800s Germany vs. today. At first, I use a number of popular fairytales, novels, and scholarly articles/books to discuss the role of women in German society in the 1800s. Furthermore, I talk about the different methods used to oppress and abuse women in modern times, mainly focusing on the role of social media as a tool of oppression. Finally, I emphasize and debate the similarities and differences between the different oppression forms over time.

Auf Dem Weg Zum Cyberpunk (On The Way To Cyberpunk), Yuzhou Sun Apr 2021

Auf Dem Weg Zum Cyberpunk (On The Way To Cyberpunk), Yuzhou Sun

Senior Theses and Projects

"Cyberpunk" is a word that is both familiar and unfamiliar to us. In some ways, it is familiar to us. As a sub-genre of science fiction, Cyberpunk is a popular futuristic theme that greatly influenced pop culture in the 21st century. We are fascinated by the bizarre but realistic fictional world, a dystopian society characteristic of "high tech and low life" for the majority population, it presents. In most works of this genre, an overwhelming technology company monopolies most social resources and dominates society like a "leviathan". The majority population is alienated from the well-being brought by high technology. …

L’Universalité De La Voix Féminine : Interprétations Genrées De La Poésie Romantique Française Et Allemande, Mimi Mackilligan

Senior Theses and Projects

Contemporary French feminist literary critics have debated whether the category of woman is an empowering or limiting paradigm through which to analyze women writers. Hélène Cixous coined the term "feminine writing [écriture féminine]" in order to link femininity to a radical particularity, whereas Monique Wittig has asserted that this concept confines women writers to their minority identity rather than allowing them to be read universally. Such discussions serve as a useful lens through which to analyze women writers who grappled with their gendered position far before the advent of 20th-century feminism.

Despite the abundance of woman …

Rapunzels Körpersprache: Eine Analyse Der Behandlung Weiblicher Körper In Dem Rapunzel Märchen Genealogie, Hannah Mccurry

Senior Theses and Projects

The Rapunzel tale (ATU: 310: “The Maiden in the Tower”) has entertained the minds of adults and children alike for more than 350 years, with adaptations of this tale weaving throughout history from Italian, French, and German storytellers, and throughout modern times as well, from female poets and American animation studios. Rapunzel has a rich and variegated history, with one of the earliest known, written versions of the tale being Petrosinella (1634) by Giambattista Basile. Inspired by this Italian tale is the French Persinette (1698) by Charlotte-Rose de Caumont de La Force, which itself led to Friedrich Schulzs Rapunzel (1790), …

Gewalt Und Gedächtnis: An Examination Of Gerhard Richter’S 18. Oktober 1977 In Relation To The West German Mass Media, Matthew Mcdevitt

Senior Theses and Projects

In 1988, Gerhard Richter completed 18. Oktober 1977, the controversial fifteen-painting cycle that details the history and memory of the Red Army Faction (RAF), the homegrown left-extremist group that terrorized the Federal Republic of Germany from 1970 until 1977, carrying out a campaign of bank robberies, bombings, and kidnappings in support of its armed struggle against contemporary capitalism and the perceived threat of reemergent fascism in postwar West Germany. Richter appropriates found media and police photographs to cast the RAF and the events of the “German Autumn,” the period of intense and escalating confrontations between the RAF and the …

Das Ss-Helferinnenkorps: Drei Phasen, Drei Frauen, Hayden Mueller Apr 2019

Das Ss-Helferinnenkorps: Drei Phasen, Drei Frauen, Hayden Mueller

Senior Theses and Projects

Since the end of World War II, scholarship on the Third Reich has focused predominantly on men. Recent developments in the field have brought women into view, but their roles, motivations, and contributions remain under-researched. The SS-Helferinnenkorps, created for the dual purpose of relieving male communications staff for service on the front and establishing a vetted group of women embodying Himmler’s weibliche Ideal, has remained largely overlooked, and the little serious scholarship available presents the organization as a separate unit. To fill gaps in the research as well as bring about an understanding of the SS-Helferinnenkorps in the context of …

Literarische Zensur Als Meinungsbildung: Zensur In Der Bundesrepublik Und Die Entwicklung Einer Neuen Wahrnehmung Der Ehemaligen Ddr, Lauren M. Davidson

Senior Theses and Projects

Germany has a long history of literary censorship. Following the Second World War and the division of Germany into the Federal Republic of Germany in the West and the German Democratic Republic in the East, both states simultaneously decried censorship in their constitutions and proceeded to unofficially censor literature. A vast amount of research and attention has focused on the censorship program of the East German Ministry for Culture. Little attention, however, has been given to censorship in West Germany, despite its critical role in the development of a new cultural identity and perception of the former East Germany. This …

Soccer is a beloved and successful sport that serves as an important part of Germany’s culture, and, like in other European countries, there has always been a correlation between the success of a country’s soccer team and a perceived prominence of that nation. In the summer of 2014, the German National Team took the title of FIFA World Cup victors, in a tournament that was heavily publicized through all forms of media, both print and digital.

Now more than ever before, newer forms of digital media are emerging as popular forums for the distribution of news, and of conversation thereafter. …

Frauen Und Geschlechter In Märchen: Von Der Gebrüder Grimm Zu Disney, Harrison W. Lawrence Apr 2015

Frauen Und Geschlechter In Märchen: Von Der Gebrüder Grimm Zu Disney, Harrison W. Lawrence

Senior Theses and Projects

This thesis explores the representation of gender in fairy tales. Gender is among the most fundamental social constructs. Every culture has unique gender roles, and these roles must be taught to members of a society from a very young age. One of the oldest, and most successful methods of teaching gender roles to people of all ages is through fairy tales. In this thesis I demonstrate many of the subtle ways in which fairy tales are able to communicate powerful lessons about gender. The Grimm Brother’s Kinder und Hausmärchen transformed the fairy tale from oral tradition to literary genre. As …
