In this poster I will attempt to create a visual history of the representation and description of Black characters in select German children’s books in light of the recent controversy that erupted when the Thienemann Verlag announced their new edition of Otfried Preußler’s classic Die kleine Hexe would remove the word “Negerlein.” A full-scale public debate emerged in Germany with Stern, Spiegel, and other prominent publications weighing in to a debate that placed the white literary establishment against a host of Black German artists, activists, and citizens. In German youth literature set on the North American frontier, authors construct a claim to a German America. In these texts Germans are presented as most worthy citizens and the ideal colonizers: moral and tolerant, racially superior, disinterested, establishing a colonial claim to the Americas, in particular to the North American West.

This poster investigates the life, career, and travels of Klara May, the widow of Karl May. Klara May devoted her later years to promoting her late husband’s legacy, and I will focus in particular on her 1931 "Mit Karl May dutch Amerika," a travelogue documenting her solo journey through the American West to visit the places that Karl May never had. I will visually explore her career in my poster, incorporating both her written works and her photography. My poster will address the politics of representation, regarding both her representations of American Indians and representations of May in later literature …
