If you Google the name of the German artist Käthe Kollwitz, you will find every bit as much information as you would find about Frieda Kahlo or Georgia O’Keefe. But if you attempt to move beyond a major figure like Kollwitz, the resources become scarce. As Margaret Rennolds (1987) has argued, women artists have traditionally been excluded from the canon of visual arts, with artists like Kollwitz and O’Keefe serving as notable exceptions. Polish Folk Art Since The Fall Of Communism, William Badger, Walter Whipple

During the Second World War, Poland’s occupiers ravaged whole collections of her folk art, alternatively destroying them or carting them off as wartime spoils. Then, in Communist times, the folk arts experienced an unexpected renaissance. The state fostered folk art through numerous incentive programs including pensions for the artists and periodic nationwide folk carving contests, which boasted cash prizes as well as prestige.
