Hildegard Von Bingen: A Work Of Virtues, Gina Fowler, Rob Mcfarland Sep 2018

Hildegard Von Bingen: A Work Of Virtues, Gina Fowler, Rob Mcfarland

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Researchers seeking historical primary and secondary source documents in a foreign language must often overcome the challenge of finding those resources without actually travelling to their country of origin. The Sophie Digital Library is an online database that was created by BYU faculty to address a very specific aspect of this problem, by gathering and making available works and research specifically related to German-speaking women. Because the Sophie Digital Library enjoys a broad group of users across the world, who rely upon its digital collections, much effort is expended to provide reliable resources and documents related to German-speaking women from …

Red Vienna Sourcebook, Blake Taylor, Dr. Rob Mcfarland May 2018

Red Vienna Sourcebook, Blake Taylor, Dr. Rob Mcfarland

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Under the guidance of my ORCA mentor, Professor Rob McFarland, I teamed up this semester with an international working group that is producing the Red Vienna Sourcebook, a reference work that will help North American scholars to supplement their knowledge of German-speaking Europe in the interwar period. I worked with Professor McFarland primarily to search out newspaper articles that demonstrate this time period, write introductions to the articles, and submit the articles for inclusion in the sourcebook.

Finding Sources For The Red Vienna Sourcebook, Madeline Mcfarland, Dr. Michelle James May 2018

Finding Sources For The Red Vienna Sourcebook, Madeline Mcfarland, Dr. Michelle James

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In between the World Wars, German-speaking Europe was split into two major groups: The Weimar Republic, which consisted of current Germany, and the SocialDemocratically run Austria. Due to this SocialDemocratic government, the capital (and eventually time period) was referred to as “Red Vienna.” While the Weimar Republic has many firsthand accounts that have been made available to scholars, teachers and historians, relatively little has been compiled from Red Vienna. Our goal with this project was to discover more sources that dealt with Gender and Feminism in Red Vienna, as well as more female authors to gain a more complete and …

Karl May’S Amerika German Intellectual Imperialism, Seth Cannon, Robert Mcfarland Jun 2017

Karl May’S Amerika German Intellectual Imperialism, Seth Cannon, Robert Mcfarland

Journal of Undergraduate Research

From Columbus to the Spaghetti Westerns of the 20th century Europeans have manipulated and sculpted America to reflect their values and priorities. Germans in particular have developed a strange fascination with America, specifically the American West. This “America” is, however, largely an intellectual construct, heavily influenced by the nineteenth-century author of juvenile, cowboy literature Karl May. Myriad Germans have devoured his novels for more than a century, making him one of Germany’s most read authors. Although many other German authors have written Wild West novels, no other novelist has been able to supplant Karl May’s reigning popularity. The durability of …

Elisa Von Der Recke: Volume Iv Of The Critically Edited Collected Works Restored Sheet Music, David Seay, Dr. Michelle James Jun 2017

Elisa Von Der Recke: Volume Iv Of The Critically Edited Collected Works Restored Sheet Music, David Seay, Dr. Michelle James

Journal of Undergraduate Research

My project involved recording and publishing restored music from the 18th century. BYU’s “Mentored Research Sophia Project,” led by staff within the German & Russian Department, is creating a Complete Works Anthology of Eliza von der Recke, a German poet of the 18th century. Part of the anthology will include a chapter that covers all the musical compositions that set Recke’s poetry to music. Several big name composers set Recke’s poetry to music, including CPE Bach and Carl Loewe. My contribution to the Anthology was to transcribe the all of the old printed music into modern sheet music format, and …

Without funding there would be no Sophie project, which is why the first item in this report on the Sophie activities during 2014 must again be an expression of our gratitude to both the ORCA office and to the College of Humanities, on behalf of the faculty members involved, and particularly, on behalf of the many students whose lives have been enriched in numerous ways by their Sophie work. We are aware of the many projects vying for your attention and funding, and are particularly grateful for the support you have given this project over the years. Your grants have …

Patient-Provider Interactions In Health Care: Use Of And Attitudes Towards Multilingual Communications, Kyle Baird, Laura Smith Feb 2016

Patient-Provider Interactions In Health Care: Use Of And Attitudes Towards Multilingual Communications, Kyle Baird, Laura Smith

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Previous research has examined the provider-patient relationship and the effect of different first languages and culture on such relationship (1,2,3). Most studies conducted in the United States have focused primarily on the interactions between English-speaking health care providers and Spanish-speaking patients. Such studies found a relationship between quality of communication and quality of care received by patients, (2,3). When the patient is minimally proficient in English the divide increases and patients receive less information. Similarly, the provider’s proficiency in the patient’s language correlates with the quality of communication and care. The purpose of this study was to investigate a broader …

Viennese Kineticism And Beyond: A Bibliography Of Austrian Women Artists, Dianne Isom, Dr. Rob Mcfarland Feb 2016

Viennese Kineticism And Beyond: A Bibliography Of Austrian Women Artists, Dianne Isom, Dr. Rob Mcfarland

Journal of Undergraduate Research

While the advent of digital archives have revolutionized the discipline of Women’s Studies, the current online offerings of visual and textual works by German-speaking women artists, especially Austrian artists, lag far behind the digital collections of their English-, French-, and Spanish-language contemporaries. Brigham Young University’s Sophie Digital Library project is the largest and most-used online archive of works by German-speaking women, but its collections focus only on literature, music and science. Using the successful and widely-used platform of the Sophie archive, my mentor and I attempted to help round out the archive’s collection with an extensive digital archive of visual …

The Role Of First Language Accent On German Vowel Perception, Erik Arnold, Laura Catharine Smith Feb 2016

The Role Of First Language Accent On German Vowel Perception, Erik Arnold, Laura Catharine Smith

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The role of accent in second language (L2) production and perception has been acknowledged by researchers, but generally only in the sense of limiting their subjects to a specific dialect region to avoid any dialect influence on their results. Some studies have, however, investigated the role of first language accent in L2 production, i.e., pronunciation (Smith & Baker, 2010; Baker & Smith, 2010; O’Brien & Smith, 2010). These studies demonstrate that first language (L1) accent can indeed affect L2 production. The role of the accent to which learners are exposed has also been shown to impact L2 production (Smith, 2010; …

Elisa Von Der Recke: Volume I Of The Complete Collected Works, Anna Katharina, Michelle James Jun 2015

Elisa Von Der Recke: Volume I Of The Complete Collected Works, Anna Katharina, Michelle James

Journal of Undergraduate Research

For several years, researchers on the BYU Sophie Project have been working to compile The Critically Annotated Collected Works of Elisa von der Recke. The aim of this project was the make Recke’s writings more accessible and readable to users across the world, since most of these texts are currently very difficult to access. The texts have been transcribed from the original and exhaustively proofread to ensure an accurate reproduction. The goal of my ORCA project was to complete both the annotations and bibliographic data for Volume I, as these are the final tasks to accomplish in order to …

Beyond Käthe Kollwitz: A Bibliography Of German-Speaking Women Artists, Aloe Corry, Dr. Rob Mcfarland Jun 2015

Beyond Käthe Kollwitz: A Bibliography Of German-Speaking Women Artists, Aloe Corry, Dr. Rob Mcfarland

Journal of Undergraduate Research

If you Google the name of the German artist Käthe Kollwitz, you will find every bit as much information as you would find about Frieda Kahlo or Georgia O’Keefe. But if you attempt to move beyond a major figure like Kollwitz, the resources become scarce. As Margaret Rennolds (1987) has argued, women artists have traditionally been excluded from the canon of visual arts, with artists like Kollwitz and O’Keefe serving as notable exceptions. Yes, there are lists of women artists on Wikipedia and on the websites of various German, Swiss and Austrian museums, but even the Frauenmuseum (Museum of Women) …

Unter Den Heiden: Exploring The Motives Behind The Demonization Of African Natives In Colonial German Missionary Literature, Kristen Jacobsen, Cindy Brewer Jun 2015

Unter Den Heiden: Exploring The Motives Behind The Demonization Of African Natives In Colonial German Missionary Literature, Kristen Jacobsen, Cindy Brewer

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Although the German colonial period only lasted for a relatively brief time, from the late nineteenth century through the beginning of the twentieth century, this period spawned a large body of fiction written by missionaries. Many missions had serial newsletters, in which were published fictional stories intended to promote interest in conversion efforts and garner financial support. Many of these stories were specifically directed to children. Many of these same stories also contain native characters who are cruel, savage, and, in some instances, satanic. This presents a common contradiction found in missionary literature: how do missionaries promote saving the “lost …

Ida Pfeiffer: The Annotated Travels Of Ida Pfeiffer, Alexander Smith, Dr. Rob Mcfarland Jun 2015

Ida Pfeiffer: The Annotated Travels Of Ida Pfeiffer, Alexander Smith, Dr. Rob Mcfarland

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Before beginning this project I was aware of the vast variety of literature available in both English and German language. Having been fortunate enough to work with Dr. McFarland already on the Sophie Project, an undertaking of the Department of German and Russian here at BYU. However, I was aware that much of the existing travel literature from Ida Pfeiffer had not been collected— additionally, the original Fraktur script made it difficult for less-experienced German speakers to read and understand. In this project, I opted to transcribe and annotate the travels of Ida Pfeiffer in the United States. Being a …

Problems With Mission Literature And Imagination: German Mission Literature, 1885-1918, Eric Smith, Cindy Brewer Jun 2015

Problems With Mission Literature And Imagination: German Mission Literature, 1885-1918, Eric Smith, Cindy Brewer

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Late-nineteenth and early-twentieth century mission literature differs from most colonial texts, due to the missionaries’ treatment and focus upon the “native” population. Yet, most literary critics believe that Catholic and Protestant mission literature—particularly texts in African and Polynesian island missions—share the same roots and literary forbearers as colonial literature during the time period of 1860-1939. Colonial literature holds the ideas of nationalism, imperialism, white superiority, social Darwinism, and justification for taking land. Thus, most literary critics view mission literature as products of Colonialist writers. Despite the negative reception, all missionaries were not solely focused on conquering and destroying the native …

Women Unafraid Of Criticism: An Annotated Bibliography Of Women Journalists Of The Neue Freie Presse 1920-1933, Carl Hayden, Dr. Robert Mcfarland Apr 2014

Women Unafraid Of Criticism: An Annotated Bibliography Of Women Journalists Of The Neue Freie Presse 1920-1933, Carl Hayden, Dr. Robert Mcfarland

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Though women may have hidden behind masculine façade’s as indicated by Ann Tizia Leitich’s chastising remark, they definitely were not remaining as quite as they once did. Compared to the late 1800’s where one would be lucky to find five articles written by women in a given month, one can easily find about thirty in a given month during the 1920’s. Women expressed not only views about fashion in these articles, but also critiqued Freud, submitted literary analyses, created wonderful allegories and shaped the views of the United States of America and Japan. Through Professor Robert McFarland’s and my efforts, …

Germans & The Wild West: A Cinematic Reinvention Of German National Identity In The Cold-War Period, Romy Franks Apr 2014

Germans & The Wild West: A Cinematic Reinvention Of German National Identity In The Cold-War Period, Romy Franks

Journal of Undergraduate Research

A few weeks ago, I was in my office with my younger sister, Maya, as she looked over our International Cinema poster. To my astonishment, I heard her say, “What? There’s a German film about Indians? Weird!” I think my disbelief stemmed from the fact that I had just returned from a research trip in Germany to study this very topic. It dawned on me in that moment that if my own sister was unaware of the Germans’ love for cowboys and Indians, then how in tarnation would the general American public be expected to know about this?

The Folk Heroine Elise Von Der Recke: Her Life And The Fictions Surrounding It, Nathan Conder, Dr. Michelle James Apr 2014

The Folk Heroine Elise Von Der Recke: Her Life And The Fictions Surrounding It, Nathan Conder, Dr. Michelle James

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In the late 18th century Count Cagliostro, an occult figure and magician, traveled across Europe preaching that he was able to contact the dead, and gaining many followers. In 1787 Elisa von der Recke, a woman with close connections to Cagliostro, wrote a book denouncing him as a fraud and warning others to not be taken in by him. Elisa von der Recke’s book was a huge sensation, first because it denounced one of Europe’s most notorious persons, and second, because it was written by a woman, and at that time women simply did not write these kinds of works. …

Putting The Muse To Music: German Composers And Elisa Von Der Recke, Aubrey Hatch, Dr. Michelle James, Cindy Brewer Apr 2014

Putting The Muse To Music: German Composers And Elisa Von Der Recke, Aubrey Hatch, Dr. Michelle James, Cindy Brewer

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Some artists create music directly, while other artists—like Elisa von der Recke—inspire others to create music. Elisa von der Recke was a literary phenomenon in her era, a woman whose writing was taken seriously by male readers, thinkers, and, very importantly, by male composers. At the height of her popularity and shortly after her death, several of Germany’s best composers put Recke’s poetry to music. Unfortunately, for all of their popularity during the German Romantic period, Recke’s poems—as well as their musical accompaniments—have all but disappeared1. The purpose of this project was to both compile and transcribe music that was …

Comparing Gains In German Vowel Production Across Three Learning Environments, Anna Katharina Burton, Dr. Laura C. Smith Apr 2014

Comparing Gains In German Vowel Production Across Three Learning Environments, Anna Katharina Burton, Dr. Laura C. Smith

Journal of Undergraduate Research

This study sought to compare pronunciation gains in German in three learning environments, focusing especially on the umlauted vowels, e.g., /ø:/ as in Schönheit ‘beauty’ and /y:/ as in üben ‘to practice.’ Our research aimed to answer the following questions: 1. In which learning environment do students make more improvement in vowel production during an 11-week period: on a Berlin Study Abroad (SA), living in the German House, or while taking German classes? And 2. To what extent do problems with production of umlauted vowels impact the way native speakers rate the pronunciation of learners’ vowels?

Website To Preserve Unique Information On German Composer Luise Greger, Camila Trujillo Medina, Dr. Michelle Scott James Apr 2014

Website To Preserve Unique Information On German Composer Luise Greger, Camila Trujillo Medina, Dr. Michelle Scott James

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The endeavor to preserve the memory of German composer Luise Greger (1862-1944) has taken me and my mentor, Dr. Michelle James, head of the German and Slavic Department, into the almost unexplored topic of early 20th century German music. Since very little effort has been devoted to Greger’s music, there have been but few sources we could turn to as we have gathered contextual information to frame Greger’s significance in history. As a result, we have been able to delve into an exciting area of knowledge, breaking ground where barely anyone else had been.

Guide To Estonian Jewish Genealogy, Patrick Monson, Thom Edlund

Journal of Undergraduate Research

I am from Bountiful, Utah. I am majoring in Family History-Genealogy. During the 2011 Spring Term, I worked at the Estonian Historical Archives in Tartu, Estonia, and the Estonian Jewish Museum in Tallinn, Estonia. At the Archives, my major responsibility was to translate Hebrew documents into Estonian. I also transliterated Yiddish documents. At the Museum, I gave tours to visitors (mostly Jewish tourists from the U.S. and Israel), teaching them about the history and culture of Estonia’s Jews. At both the Archives and Museum, I composed a Guide to Estonian Jewish Genealogical Research, which is available at the Museum’s website, …

Change In Grammatical Competence On Study Abroad, Falk Kleinert, Dr. Hans Wilhelm Apr 2014

Change In Grammatical Competence On Study Abroad, Falk Kleinert, Dr. Hans Wilhelm

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Study abroad has long been argued to be the best way to improve a student´s proficiency in a second language, e.g., German. This claim is being scrutinized more and more in light of the current economic struggles facing many students and their families. This project is part of a larger study conducted by my mentor, Dr. Kelling, and his colleague, Dr. Laura Smith, assessing language gains on Berlin study abroad.

The Cinematographic Portrayal Of Americans In Late Stalin Era Soviet Film, James K. Pringle, Dr. Raissa Solovieva Apr 2014

The Cinematographic Portrayal Of Americans In Late Stalin Era Soviet Film, James K. Pringle, Dr. Raissa Solovieva

Journal of Undergraduate Research

This research examines how Soviet directors portrayed Americans in the six anti-American films released during the late Stalin era (1945-1953). These six films are The Russian Question (dir. Romm, 1947), Meeting on the Elbe (dir. Alexandrov, 1949), Court of Honor (dir. Room, 1949), Conspiracy of the Doomed (dir. Kalatozov, 1950), Secret Mission (dir. Romm, 1950), and Silvery Dust (dir. Room, 1953). This period is unique because the allies of World War II became enemies in the Cold War. Accordingly, for the first time in Soviet Cinema, Americans became the enemy. Since the Soviet Union was a closed country, all actors …

Pronunciation Gains On Berlin Study Abroad: Does Starting Proficiency Play A Role?, Emily Hall, Dr. Laura Smith Apr 2014

Pronunciation Gains On Berlin Study Abroad: Does Starting Proficiency Play A Role?, Emily Hall, Dr. Laura Smith

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Study abroad programs have long enjoyed the prestige of being considered an exceptionally effective way to become fluent in a second language (Freed 1998). This conclusion has been supported by a multitude of studies. Smith, Aten, and Baker (2009) showed that German students on an 11-week study abroad in Berlin and on a similar study abroad in Vienna improved their accentedness, fluency, and comprehensibility in the course of the program. Moreover, Freed (1998) notes that many large-scale studies tend to find overall improvement in the listening and speaking skills of students participating in a study abroad. However, not all studies …

Discrimination And Second Language Acquisition During Study Abroad, Nicholas Kramer, Dr. Laura Smith Apr 2014

Discrimination And Second Language Acquisition During Study Abroad, Nicholas Kramer, Dr. Laura Smith

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Our research project has been a very exciting development, and although there is more to be done, we have accomplished a lot in the past year. Three different surveys, all of which had 40 questions, were written and distributed while I was on a study abroad in Berlin, Germany. The point of the surveys was to discover what personal language attitudes and biases towards foreigners were held. We investigated three groups of German speakers: native German speakers, non-native German speakers, and BYU students. Initially, we wanted to look at how language gains were affected by bias, but since the language …

Ruth Berlau: A Talented Author In Her Own Right, Julie Kalani Smith, Dr. James K. Lyon Feb 2014

Ruth Berlau: A Talented Author In Her Own Right, Julie Kalani Smith, Dr. James K. Lyon

Journal of Undergraduate Research

As I began researching Ruth Berlau’s life, I encountered repeated references to Berlau’s beauty, always accompanied by the suggestion that it was her looks that attracted German playwright Bertolt Brecht’s attention. Berlau was one of a long line of women whom Brecht drew into his orbit, but most critics seem to agree that Berlau lacked the literary and secretarial skills of her predecessors Elisabeth Hauptmann and Margarethe Steffin. In contrast, Berlau is often regarded as an eccentric, overly aggressive woman, who was Brecht’s lover and follower, but not his equal. Despite, or perhaps because of this widespread but superficial assumption, …
