University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
A year after Alyssa Milano’s tweet launched the #MeToo movement, survivors of sexual assault are being called ‘accusers’ in the media, and public opinion is swinging in favor of guilty men. #MeToo raised awareness but not understanding. What is rape? What is consent? As evidenced by the #MeToo movement and the backlash against it, clearly, as a society, we don’t know. Contact is a work of Creative Nonfiction that uses scenes and details from the narrator’s personal experiences to illuminate the micro-negotiations that occur in sex and seduction.
In a world where women are still expected to stay small and …

Sino Evil − See No Evil: Graphic Violence In Octave Mirbeau And Judith Gautier, Juliana Starr

Senior Honors Theses
The creation of the French Penal Code of 1791, which failed to address the legality of prostitution, and the social climate of nineteenth-century France led to the rapid development of sexual commerce. The spread of syphilitic diseases soon became a serious crisis, and the fault of the spread of syphilis and disease was quickly ascribed to purchasable women. Other social crises of the time, such as problems with sewage and the spread of disease and decay also came to be associated with prostitution. My thesis will examine ways in which male artists of the time used literature and painting to …

Less Is Gore: Graphic Violence In The Fiction Of Judith Gautier, Juliana Starr

The exceptionally beautiful Judith Gautier (1845–1917), daughter of Théophile Gautier and Italian opera diva Ernesta Grisi, was raised in the epicenter of Europe’s literary and artistic avant-garde. Among the weekly visitors to her parents’ home were Flaubert, Baudelaire, Delacroix, Dumas, Taine, Mallarmé, Puivis de Chavannes, and the Goncourt brothers. She became a best-selling novelist, an early champion of Richard Wagner, a successful journalist, musicologist and art critic, a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor, and the first woman elected to the prestigious Goncourt Academy. She was instrumental in introducing Europeans to both Chinese and Japanese poetry. Yet, despite these fascinating …

A 'Picture Perfect' Banlieue Artist: Abd Al Malik Or The Perils Of A Conciliatory Rap Discourse In France, Olivier Bourderionnet
Foreign Languages Faculty Publications
This paper concentrates on the media representation of the young rapper Abd Al Malik, whose recent albums Gibraltar (2006) and Dante (2008) have been largely embraced by the Parisian elite. Along with the cultural legitimation that affords Malik’s articulate rap discourse access to a mainstream audience, questions regarding cooptation, authenticity and identity politics reveal strong divides in the French public sphere, as well as the general sense of a preordained space assigned to rap artists in the media. Malik’s artistic vision, successfully blending rap and the most aristocratic of chanson, while asserting a strong multicultural identity, comes across as …

The field of musicology lags far behind literature and the visual arts in the study of its women practitioners. Indeed, it has been nearly forty years since art historian Linda Nochlin published her ground-breaking study, "Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?" with its remarkable parallel implications for women composers. This essay attempts to address this question by studying the life and work of Louise-Angelique Bertin--the only composer to collaborate directly with Victor Hugo on an opera, the earliest French composer to write an opera based on Goethe's Faust, an artist in the middle of the biggest political and …
