A Translation Of Some Works Of Louise Michel, Early French Feminist, Militant Anarchist, And Socialist Visionary, Julianna Kramer
A Translation Of Some Works Of Louise Michel, Early French Feminist, Militant Anarchist, And Socialist Visionary, Julianna Kramer
Honors Theses
The socialist progressive Louise Michel infused her beliefs of equality and liberty from repressive governments into her daily life and career. Michel was a major leader of the Paris Commune, a revolutionary socialist government that controlled the city of Paris for roughly two months in 1871. She deployed militant tactics to defend the poor and demand legal and economic equality of the sexes.
She was a prolific writer, using writing as a revolutionary tool to disseminate socialist ideas to children and adults alike. A short story for children, titled Les dix sous de Marthe (Marthe’s Ten Coins), shows the ripple …
Partial Translation Of Clément Horvath’S Till Victory: Lettres Du Jour J À La Victoire, David Bates
Partial Translation Of Clément Horvath’S Till Victory: Lettres Du Jour J À La Victoire, David Bates
Honors Theses
This thesis includes translated sections of Clément Horvath’s Till Victory: Lettres du Jour J à la Victoire. The book contains the letters of soldiers and their families from the time of D- Day until the end of the war. These soldiers came from all over including France, the United States, Canada, Great Britain, and Canada. The book covers historical events in chronological order incorporating testimonials of those who witnessed these events to paint a picture of what the war was really like. It is almost unbelievable to read about what these soldiers went through and the relentlessness that was required …
Le Passé, Le Présent, Et L’Avenir Des Soins Dentaires En France, Grace Yotts
Le Passé, Le Présent, Et L’Avenir Des Soins Dentaires En France, Grace Yotts
Honors Theses
Picture the bustling streets of Paris in the mid-1700’s, lined with a mosaic of shouting artisans and heckling businessmen trying to make a profit from the many passersby. Among the sea of street-savvy merchants, one man stood out. Wheeling an ornate cart decked in human teeth and performing partly as a charlatan, he was none other than a tooth-puller. Dental care in France was born through these theatrical tooth-pullers, who were looking more to be a spectacle then to relieve a toothache. As science progressed over time, so too did the stance on oral health. Revolutionary milestones such as the …
Sex Education In France: An Imbalanced History, Marisa Peters
Sex Education In France: An Imbalanced History, Marisa Peters
Honors Theses
Although the history of sex education is relatively new, it is very complex. Enlightenment philosophers from Rousseau to de Sade had ideas on what the sex education of girls and of boys should entail, with Rousseau preparing her for marriage, and the latter preparing her to be a libertine! In the late 19th and early 20th centuries there were stereotypes too, of girls in the countryside learning about sex as a result of cramped living and proximity to farm animals. For young bourgeois women in the city, there were manuals on marriage and how to perform their wifely …
Le Féminisme Et La Femme Musulmane En France, Anna Elizabeth Gagion
Le Féminisme Et La Femme Musulmane En France, Anna Elizabeth Gagion
Honors Theses
My French thesis investigates how some definitions of French feminism and particular French feminist movements find themselves oppressing Muslim women. France is a country that has vigorously regulated the separation of Church and State since 1902 legislation that declared “la laïcité” (secularism) obligatory for all public education. In my research I have found that the general belief in France that religion should never have any bearing on political decisions has been beneficial to most French citizens, but it also appears to oppress a number of Muslim women, as witnessed by the on-going debate surrounding the headscarf ban in French public …

Une Étude Comparative De La Restauration Scolaire Des Primaires Au Lycée En France Et Aux États Unis Au Xxie Siècle, Brianna Cummings
Honors Theses
In recent years, there has been much debate surrounding national school lunch programs around the world. During the second half of the nineteenth century, the first school lunch programs were introduced on a school to school basis in both France and the United States. However national school lunch programs were not established until the middle of the following century. Since their establishment, national laws towards the school lunch program have greatly changed, sparked by major concern from citizens. By examining lunch programs in France and the United States, clear differences, as well as points of similarity, have been highlighted. These …
La Nouvelle Vague Est-Elle Un Cinéma Existentialiste Français ?, Niuniu Zhang
La Nouvelle Vague Est-Elle Un Cinéma Existentialiste Français ?, Niuniu Zhang
Honors Theses
Throughout the world, Existentialism and New Wave Cinema are two defining pinnacles of French culture. As iconic of France as the baguette and cheese, the two subjects continue to retain their relevance in French and francophone cultural studies. My thesis explores the correlation between French existentialist philosophy and French New Wave cinema to argue for what can be called French Existentialist Cinema. In terms of French existentialist philosophy, I focus mainly on Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, and Albert Camus. As for the French New Wave, I focus first on one of its most highly admired precursors, Jean Vigo and …
Les Réalisatrices Et Le « Regard Masculin » Dans Le Cinéma Francophone, Arianna Kosakowski
Les Réalisatrices Et Le « Regard Masculin » Dans Le Cinéma Francophone, Arianna Kosakowski
Honors Theses
This thesis focuses on how the male gaze is confronted in French and Francophone cinema, particularly in the films of the female directors Celine Sciamma, Euzhan Palcy and Claire Denis. The male gaze is a look in cinema in which women are regarded generally as sexual objects. The male gaze renders women mostly relevant only to fulfill male sexual desires, and thus as weak or background characters with little to contribute to moving the narrative action along. All six films by the female directors analyzed in this thesis, however--Bande de filles and Tomboy (Sciamma), Rue case-nègres and A Dry …
La Violence Sexuelle Faite Aux Femmes Musulmanes Dans Les Banlieues : Le RôLe Des IdéOlogies Fondamentalistes D’Islam, De La Stigmatisation De L’Homme Musulman Et Du FéMinisme Blanc, Elsa Farooq
Honors Theses
In a post-Harvey Weinstein world, sexual assault and sexual harassment have become a daily conversation around the world; however, frequently missing in this conversation are the voices of minority women. In France, sexual violence against Muslim women in the low-income housing areas called banlieues has been an issue for some time, with factors such as fundamentalist Islam, the stigmatization of Muslim men, and what some have called “white feminism” contributing to the problem as well as to the difficulty of talking about it. Underlying these forces is France’s colonial past, which has shaped how and why sexual violence has become …
L'Éducation Comme Activisme: Comment Des Associations Françaises Lgbt Actuelles Utilisent Des Interventions En Milieu Scolaire Pour Sensibiliser Des Élèves Aux Identités Lgbt, William Garner
Honors Theses

Les Motivations Pour La Privatisation Du Système De Santé Au Québec / The Motives For Healthcare Privatization In Québec, Briadna Almazo
Honors Theses
During the presidential campaign of Barack Obama his platform pushed for the creation of a health care system that would provide affordable health insurance options to all Americans. While U.S. Congress voted for the legislation the media began to speculate that the Affordable Care Act would be similar to the contemporary health system in Canada ratified under in the Canada Health Act of 1985. The Canada Health Act (1985) instated the universal public healthcare system which guarantees access for all Canadian citizens. Recently many Quebecers have demanded federal government intervention in the healthcare system due to possible introduction of extra-fee …
Role Des Femmes Dans La France De Vichy Pendant L'Occupation Allemande, Elizabeth Almonte
Role Des Femmes Dans La France De Vichy Pendant L'Occupation Allemande, Elizabeth Almonte
Honors Theses
The German occupation of France caused several changes in the lives of people living in France at the time. Although the French government continued having legal authority over the country as per specified in the Franco-German Armistice the occupied zone was in reality under German military administration. Meanwhile the "free zone" was undergoing numerous changes that affected the French population especially women and their role in society. Vichy France the name given to the French government under the administration of Philippe Petain utilized women as scapegoats for the defeat and subsequent occupation of France by the German army. In order …
Les Chroniques De Toi / The Chronicles Of You, Marc Mazza
Les Chroniques De Toi / The Chronicles Of You, Marc Mazza
Honors Theses
In an alternate reality, technological advancements have enabled people to instantly access their memories. Everyone has a memory implant that records everything humans do, see, and hear. Although having instantaneous access to memory logs may appear to be a privilege, a certain couple will soon find out that the ability to replay past events is only damaging to one's psyche. Therefore this thesis proposes an analysis of how certain technological advancements can be detrimental to society rather than beneficial. Based on this context, I have used creative writing to address this topic. The following narrative explores the relationship between a …
Les Reincarnations De Carmen: La Creation D'Un Mythe, Mary Kathryn Pope
Les Reincarnations De Carmen: La Creation D'Un Mythe, Mary Kathryn Pope
Honors Theses
Carmen, the title character of Prosper Mérimée’s 1845 novella, has taken on many lives in the creative world. Adaptations of her story have been produced over the past 150 years in operas, ballets, and films. With each new reincarnation of Carmen, her identities as a femme fatale, gypsy, and sorcerer have been altered in order to appeal to her audience. Carmen’s character changes with the audience, presented as relatable and desirable to each new generation. Each piece represents Carmen in a new light, and I explore what allows this character to be able to be altered time and time again …
Cartooning For Peace? The Necessity Of Political Cartooning To Democracy And Understanding The Struggle Of Inclusion Exclusion And Citizenship For French Muslims, Ashley Enger
Honors Theses
This combined thesis for Political Science and French and Francophone Studies will address the issue of political cartooning in relation to democracy. This thesis will show how political cartooning explores the ambiguities and contradictions of citizenship for Muslims in France. Cartoons reveal the ostracizing of citizens, the challenges of integration, and the difficulties of discovering an identity as an immigrant through explicit, shocking, and often uncomfortable imagery. By analyzing the backlash against cartoons, the effects of cartoons on the Muslim minority in France, and the ways in which traditional French cartooning has the potential to be a positive force for …
L' Absurdite De Bonheur Et Hotel Trois Mures, Olivia Merchen
L' Absurdite De Bonheur Et Hotel Trois Mures, Olivia Merchen
Honors Theses
Absurdist literatures are known for their focus on the meaninglessness of existence and the indifference of the world. Albert Camus and Jean-Paul Sartre, for example, emphasize the importance of action in this absurdist world whereby our choices and actions create the people that we become and in which we are a product of our decisions. This process can be daunting, because it renders individuals responsible for their own destiny. My analyses focus on a lesser-studied aspect of these writings: their exploration of the beauty of life, in spite of its fragility, and their expression of the appreciation and joy that …

La Nature Des Relations Françaises : Du Sexe À L’Amour Au Mariage, Rachel Frisch
La Nature Des Relations Françaises : Du Sexe À L’Amour Au Mariage, Rachel Frisch
Honors Theses
The French definition of the word relation is simple. According to the dictionary of the French language, a relationship is simply the "relationship between people". But anyone who has had a relationship knows that this definition oversimplifies things. In fact, there are many types of relationships that can go beyond this simplistic definition. These types of relationships include sexual relationships, and marital relationships, among many others. So, each type of relationship has its own definition. But, what are these types of relationships mean for France, a country that represents certain visions of "romance" to the rest of the world? France …

Hurlement: Une Traduction Du Poeme « Howl», Emilie Arseneault
Hurlement: Une Traduction Du Poeme « Howl», Emilie Arseneault
Honors Theses
I imagine that many people might wonder what a translation of the poem "Howl" of the famous American poet Allen Ginsberg. For me, the reason is obvious. A French translation of this poem is could contribute to the wealth of French literature, certainly. But my main goal is to recognize one of the great artists who has influenced multiple movements and at least three generations of American. The French will thus have access to this poem and this artist, influenced by French literary and philosophical movements that have even created an epidemic in the English language. The French surrealist movement …
Le Pouvoir De Médée: Une Analyse De Médée Comme Elle Est Perçue Dans La Culture Française, Emily Cassello
Le Pouvoir De Médée: Une Analyse De Médée Comme Elle Est Perçue Dans La Culture Française, Emily Cassello
Honors Theses
This thesis explores the character of Medea within three French adaptations spanning 19th to 21st century France. In particular, I examine different ideological influences at play in the representations of the character of Medea during specific time periods in French history. Beginning with early 19th century France, I analyze Eugène Delacroix’s Médée furieuse and how Medea’s character was heavily influenced by Romanticism. Afterwards, I analyze Jean Anouilh’s play Médée and I discover how his existentialist beliefs molded her character. Finally, I examine Le songe de Médée, a ballet choreographed by Angelin Preljoçaj. This 2004 ballet provides a modern and humanizing …

La Dernière Reine: L’Histoire D’Anne De Bretagne, Andrew N. T. Churchill
La Dernière Reine: L’Histoire D’Anne De Bretagne, Andrew N. T. Churchill
Honors Theses
The king, Charles VIII, is dead. The year is 1498. In Brittany, people are delighted that their sovereign Anne will return. Long live the duchess! In France, there is a new king, Louis XII. Long live the king ! In the eyes of the Britons, Anne was enthralled in France after the defeat and death of her father, Francis II of Brittany, in the hands of the French armies at Saint-Aubin-du-Cormier. The Treaty of the Orchard, signed after the battle, gave the King of France, Charles VIII, the right to decide the fate of Anne of Brittany. After some attempts …
Féminisme Français : Fait, Fiction, Jennifer Granina
Féminisme Français : Fait, Fiction, Jennifer Granina
Honors Theses
What gives power to an idea? What makes it real in the hearts and minds of people who believe in it? What creates the desire to struggle for this idea, an ethereal and elusive conception? These are the questions that must be considered by philosophers, by those who believe enough in an idea to make it a reality. It was the mission of feminists in France since the beginning of the 19th century. For them, feminism was not a movement that had a beginning and an end, it was a force, present in the world since the creation of the …
Coco Chanel : De La Rue À La Haute Couture – Adaptant La Nouvelle Femme, Shannon R. Funkhouser
Coco Chanel : De La Rue À La Haute Couture – Adaptant La Nouvelle Femme, Shannon R. Funkhouser
Honors Theses
The current project sought to analyze the life and work of the designer Coco Chanel. Through investigation into her life course, values, contributions to art, theater, dance, fashion, and women’s rights, it is argued that Chanel embodied the time period in which she lived ; she both influenced, and was influenced by the cultural forces that predominated. Particular attention is paid to the time periods following World War I and World War II, two events that drastically changed artistic aesthetics, social norms, and life values. The post-war eras provided the fuel for the women’s liberation movement, ushering in the idea …
Le Moi Double: Les Inconscients (Post)Coloniaux Chez Césaire Et Breton, Emma A. Krosschell
Le Moi Double: Les Inconscients (Post)Coloniaux Chez Césaire Et Breton, Emma A. Krosschell
Honors Theses
This thesis analyzes the poetic works of two French-speaking surrealist poets of the twentieth century, Aimé Césaire and André Breton. Despite their common point of surrealism, Césaire and Breton's poems differ because of their identities in a society afflicted by Western colonization. Using the literary theories of postcolonialism as a perspective for the analysis of Breton and Césaire's poems, I show that both men have a double consciousness based on the complicated influence of a colonizing society. Literary criticism of postcolonialism examines individual identities in colonial societies in relation to their symbolic position as "colonist" or "colonized." Césaire, a Martinican …

Thelō, Thelō, Manēnai: De La Traduction Poétique D’Après Une Étude Métrique, Regina Claire Chiuminatto
Honors Theses
This thesis explores the possibility of poetic translation that prioritizes metrical forms. Specifically, I have sought to represent the formal character of poems by Baudelaire and Anacreontic poets in metrical English translations. I have translated and discussed the 6th, 9th and 37th Fragments of the Anacreontics and Baudelaire’s poems “La Fontaine de Sang,” “Tristesses de la Lune,” and “Le Vin de l’assassin.” From this translation process I have been able to draw conclusions more generally about the difficulties posed by the translation of poetry. In the case of the Anacreontics, I have had to depend on generic considerations as well …
Femmes Politiques En France : Une Comparaison Des Femmes Politiques De La France Et Des Antilles Françaises, Sarah F. Stiles
Femmes Politiques En France : Une Comparaison Des Femmes Politiques De La France Et Des Antilles Françaises, Sarah F. Stiles
Honors Theses
