Sensing A Way Out Of René Char's "Historian's Hovel", Jennifer Pap
Sensing A Way Out Of René Char's "Historian's Hovel", Jennifer Pap
Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature
René Char, like many other twentieth-century writers, faced the dilemma of how to write adequately about historical atrocity, and key moments in his writing about violence display this. In the context of post-World War I disillusionment, rising Fascism, and post-World War II calculations of those who vied for power, he also criticized bad faith iterations of History. However, a number of texts in his Feuillets d’Hypnos ('Leaves of Hypnos,') published in 1946 and written during his participation in the Resistance, assert an alternative history in which aesthetic, ethical, and political experience were linked. With the post-war return to …

Jeux Et Enjeux Des Formes Poétiques Dans Les Mystères Médiévaux, Patrick Ager
Jeux Et Enjeux Des Formes Poétiques Dans Les Mystères Médiévaux, Patrick Ager
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Late-medieval mystery plays present an exceptionally rich versification. This dissertation aims to shed light on the features of these texts, which I consider to be “dramatic poems”. Scholars have long recognized that the playwrights of this period used many complex strophic forms in their works: this was noted by Henri Chatelain in his Recherches sur le vers français au quinzième siècle (1908). However, studies on the versification of medieval theatre have often been limited to mere lists and catalogues of forms, sometimes accompanied by cursory remarks. Certainly, such an approach provides a glimpse of the technical virtuosity of these poets; …

The Shadow Of Dante In French Renaissance Lyric: Scève's Délie, Alison Baird Lovell
The Shadow Of Dante In French Renaissance Lyric: Scève's Délie, Alison Baird Lovell
Research in Medieval and Early Modern Culture
This book presents an interpretation of Maurice Scève's lyric sequence Délie, object de plus haulte vertu (Lyon, 1544) in literary relation to the Vita nuova, Commedia, and other works of Dante Alighieri. Dante’s subtle influence on Scève is elucidated in depth for the first time, augmenting the evident allusions in Délie to the Canzoniere of Petrarch (Francesco Petrarca). Scève’s sequence of dense, epigrammatic dizains is considered to be an early example, prior to the Pléiade poets, of French Renaissance imitation of Petrarch's vernacular poetry, in a time when imitatio was an established literary practice, signifying the poet’s …

Silenced Voices: Situating Disability Studies In France Through The Poet Babouillec, Mira Nakhle
Senior Theses and Projects
Disability studies is a growing field of research in the US, but has been slow to take root in countries with more conservative academic structures like France. In particular, representation of the experience of life with a disability is challenged when individuals face barriers of communication or stigma about their abilities. This paper looks specifically at works by and about Babouillec, a young French poet with autism classified by her doctors as “deficient by 80%”. In exploring the implications of her work, I evaluate the ways in which the mediation of her story by those around her (in the production …
