Unsustainable: A Planet in Crisis features artwork ranging in material, discipline, and execution that addresses the theme of planetary crises – climate change, the rise of disease and superbugs, world conflict and national instability, plastics in the ocean, gun violence, pollution of the waterways from mining, air pollution from use of fossil fuels, the opioid crisis, and species extinction.

One side of a cassette tape preserves a pivotal moment between two lovers from two different worlds. Through a recorded phone conversation and various mixtapes, a real story of true love unfolds between Navyman, Keith Wilkinson and waitress, Evelyn Espejo as they prepare for their new lives together in the United States. A black screen begins the story as the sound of a play button is pressed, and audio from a phone conversation is heard. Subtitles accompany the sound at the bottom of the screen. We watch movies, mostly for the mind-blowing special effects, extraordinary actors and actresses, and/or the unforgettable stories, but when do we ever remove the visual and just listen to the scripts or embrace the noise? In my work, I stray from the visual studies and draw that which I hear. I am interested in capturing the visual formation of words that become noise as they build up in my memory. As the mouths group together, so then does all of the character dialogue, ultimately resulting in incoherent noise.

In Pencil Pushed, the word pencil functions simply as a metaphor or symbol for drawing and its activity. The selected artists are known for their drawing or drawing activity as their primary means of expression and have either pushed the material, process, or boundary of conventional drawing. Media included video, sculpture, animation, installation, and of course, works on paper. This exhibition is neither a survey nor the definitive grouping of mark-making artists.
