Murmur/Murmuro, Paola M. Di Tolla May 2018

Murmur/Murmuro, Paola M. Di Tolla

Theses and Dissertations

By using repetition or misplacing intonations and accents, etc. one can imitate the slipperiness of spoken language. However, it is the accidental slippage that I find most revealing and exciting because it allows for two conversations to exist in one. Once spoken language is transcribed as text, it is put through another filter and the risk of [accidental] slippage increases by a different measure. Fingers don’t keep up or autocorrect insists on taking matters into its own hands.

Motherfuck, Emily Furr May 2018

Motherfuck, Emily Furr

Theses and Dissertations

I want to record the breakdown of male systems and the rise of the mother archetype. In my paintings, I show symbols of masculinity being disassembled and retranslated. I embrace the return of the feminine as we move out of the phallic world of industrialism and into something new.

Private Rainbows, Mikey F. Estes May 2018

Private Rainbows, Mikey F. Estes

Theses and Dissertations

I make art that refers to how the self is mediated through structures, objects, and images — a kind of self-portraiture that circles around its subject, reflecting a state of simultaneous formation and disintegration. Over the past few years, I have used my iPhone as a tool to make images of everyday life. As the user of this device, I am defined by both my presence and absence. I am interested in the process of locating the self within the scattered yet ordered space of the screen.

Madhini Nirmal uses Mikhail Bakhtin's concept of the carnival to imagine a goat-led subversion of political and social dogma in the context of the South Indian city of Chennai. She uses the mediums of monotype, painting and collage to create these artworks where the undoing of hierarchies is a result of the natural and bodily.

A Race Of Angels And Their Nameless Longings, Andrew Van Dinh

Theses and Dissertations

I use drawing methods to navigate my diasporic perception and conjure narratives of displacement. This indecipherable distance between self and Other, Vietnam and I, has formed into enigmatic desires, which informs the use of the imaginary in my works as temporary solutions to issues of self-hood and nameless longings.

The Other At War: Performing The Spanish-Cuban-American War On U.S. And Cuban Stages, Juan R. Recondo May 2018

The Other At War: Performing The Spanish-Cuban-American War On U.S. And Cuban Stages, Juan R. Recondo

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The Spanish-Cuban-American War, declared by the United States on April 25, 1898, marks a colonial shift in the history of the Caribbean and solidified the expansionist thrust of the United States outside national borders. Theatres in turn-of-the-century New York, which at this point was one of the theatrical centers of the nation, debated for audiences the imperialist character of the U.S. The Cuban struggle and the resulting Spanish-Cuban-American War permeated U.S. drama, thereby portraying a Caribbean in need of salvation by the military intervention of the United States. New York stages of the time became locations where various cultural representations …

Taking Cues From Online Learning Offline In The Visual Classroom, Kimberly Datchuk Jan 2018

Taking Cues From Online Learning Offline In The Visual Classroom, Kimberly Datchuk

Art History Pedagogy & Practice

Theories of online learning can inform how academic museums provide a student-centered approach to teaching. Technology has four main advantages for teaching in the museum: it is open-ended, self-paced, collaborative, and empowering. In order to activate the art works and encourage students to contribute their ideas, I have drawn on the best practices of online teaching tools when designing university class visits. The chance to discuss works among themselves enables students to make personal connections to the works and each other. The informal environment of the class visit helps to produce a student-led experience. Encouraging students to ask questions, following …
