The Branch on Which the Blossom Hangs is a body of paintings which address the relationship between landscape or physical presence and the primary experiences of emotion and perception. Through this examination of phenomenology and the malleability of the perceptual apparatus, the paintings express my feeling of dislocation caused by a cycle between depression, dissociation, and mental well-being. They question how an individual relates to their environment. The paintings seek to elicit the allusive and embodied qualities of poetry, framing and evoking a broader experience without defining it. This series of paintings focuses on red cockaded woodpeckers, an endangered species of bird and the longleaf pines forests which they live in and are reliant upon. I drew my inspiration mostly from personal experience with my family’s own efforts to restore one of these forests as well as my longstanding belief in the importance of protecting the environment. In the shadows and folds is the result of a mental scavenger hunt that I began this past year, to uncover myself and find what is hidden in my crevices. We have been conditioned by past generations in our understanding of portrait importance. On the contemporary side of portraiture, most pictures are concealed within tech devices. Among common society, these personal phone portraits of oneself are considered tactless, and taboo. Most do not exist in a tangible context. It is my mission to display these portraits with a sense of grandeur and appreciation. My work is a retaliation to the boundaries of what was and what is portraiture.
