In The Groove: A Documentary About Vinyl, Jared Endsley

The goal of this thesis project, ‘In the Groove’ is to tell the story of why vinyl records, a music format written off as a casualty to the digital age is experiencing a cultural resurgence. In the last several years vinyl records have been the only musical format to record positive sales growth.

For many musicians today, pressing their music to vinyl records yields the greatest return on investment. However, vinyl remains a niche market, supported by a devoted fan base.

This film focuses on a group of artists and vinyl enthusiasts as they navigate this new marketplace.

What do you get when you mix a girl from Long Island, critical theory, a movie based on a Saturday Night Live sketch, David Bowie, and alternative rock of the early 2000s? A lot of losers, a lot of queerness, and plenty of room for deconstruction.

The main purpose of this project was to develop visually appealing, informative graphic elements and branding to effectively promote a musical performance. This is interdisciplinary in nature and includes written and oral communication.

While many music students post about their senior recital on social media or place flyers, they do not develop a thorough methodology for generating buzz about their event. Documentaries and narrative films both tell stories in different ways. A common saying states that narrative filmmakers write one movie, shoot another, and edit a third. In postproduction, timelines are rearranged, montages are created, new dialog and voiceovers are written, and the score can alter the mood and meaning entirely. Documentaries can change even more over the course of their creation. Usually, the script of the documentary is not written until the edit, after most of the interviews and B roll have been shot. Electronic Rhapsody: Theremin and Matryomin is a short documentary film, which explores two magical musical instruments: the Theremin and the Matryomin. Both instruments represent innovations in the history of electronic music. The film depicts the world of these unique musical instruments, their inventors and performers who make up the community.

Shuksan Story: An Original Soundtrack Composition, Jonathan (Jonathan Mahan) Ross

This thesis centers around a composition written to score a documentary called “Shuksan Story,” a film documentary about the revitalization of Shuksan Middle School in Bellingham, WA. To satisfy the needs of the documentary, the composition includes four sections, including a set all in the same key signature, a set featuring the main theme, stand-alone pieces, and brief “stingers”. The project also includes recordings of all compositions: performed, mixed and finalized by the composer. The intention is that the filmmaker will edit these pieces into the completed project.
