Inmigracion Y Género: La Representación De La Mujer Inmigrante En El Cine Español Contemporáneo, Jenna Langhans

Honors Theses

This project explores the representation of undocumented women immigrants in Spanish cinema in the past three decades through the analysis of three films: Flores de otro mundo (1999) directed by Icíar Bollaín, and Princesas (2005) and Amador (2010), both directed by Fernando León de Aranoa. These directors are part of a third wave of Spanish film makers whose artistic motives lie in conveying pertinent commentary concerning important and controversial issues that affect contemporary Spanish society at the economic, political, and cultural levels. Cinematic Jewish Women In Rural Argentina And The Representation Of Argentinidad, Mirna Vohnsen Jan 2013

Cinematic Jewish Women In Rural Argentina And The Representation Of Argentinidad, Mirna Vohnsen

Articles

From the outset, Argentine cinema has played a significant role in the question of argentinidad. The historical account of how Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe settled in the Argentine interior and became Argentines rooted in the land has not escaped Argentine film. Although period films portray Jewish female characters as nation builders alongside their male counterparts, the study of Jewish women in Argentine cinema has received little scholarly attention. In an attempt to remedy that, this article shows that the examination of the Jewish female onscreen can shed light on the controversial question of argentinidad. It examines the representation of …

Salvation: An Exploration, Kelsey Rose Weber

This thesis explores how women in different religious communities relate to the concept of Salvation. Focusing on Buddhism, Judaism, Islam, and Hinduism, this short experimental film, and supplement paper, seek to provide an alternative point of view that translates this unique experience for women in religions that use heavily gendered language and that are rooted in traditional patriarchal cultures. By using the experimental film medium, viewers are able to perceive religion and film in a new way that pushes the viewer to give their own interpretation of the imagery on screen. It also allows viewers to give the imagery meaning …

Claire Legendre’S Portrait Of Hypermodern Society, Michèle A. Schaal Jan 2013

Claire Legendre’S Portrait Of Hypermodern Society, Michèle A. Schaal

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

Theorists from various academic disciplines believe Western society has entered an age of excess and exacerbated modernity: all areas of life are affected by a will to be or do more at an always faster pace. This article focuses on French writer Claire Legendre’s literary translation of hypermodernity, especially in her narratives published over the past decade. First, it examines her portrayal of contemporary individuality, marked by all sorts of excesses and especially by the imperative to make the most of oneself and one’s life. This ideal being in itself excessive, her characters resort to extreme behaviors. However, they never …

Powerful Veiled Visions In A Neo-Patriarchal Iranian Cinema: A Study Of Tahminemilani’S Fifth Reaction (2003), Esmaeil Zeiny

Films about ‘women’s issues’ and their importance in Iran have not been paid in-depth attention in scholarly works. These films are labeled as political as they challenge the institutions and values of patriarchy in Iranian society. In recent years, Iranian women filmmakers have produced an impressive body of work and they have won a number of international awards. These filmmakers carved a niche despite all the restrictions imposed by patriarchal strictures. However, these filmmakers are still facing difficulties in making their films as the political fortunes of the conservatives and reformers continue to ebb and flow. TahmineMilani is one of …
