Wes Craven's first film was a 45-minute color 16mm student film titled Pandora Experimentia, for which Craven served as director of photography when he was a faculty member at Clarkson College of Technology in 1968. This essay tells the story of the making and exhibition of this early Craven film before he left teaching to pursue a successful career in filmmaking.
The Bachelor Machine - A Short Film By Jack Rose, Jack Rose
The Bachelor Machine - A Short Film By Jack Rose, Jack Rose
Honors Theses
My Bucknell Honors Thesis submission for the Film and Media Studies department consists of two different parts. The first part is a 5-minute short film, titled “the bachelor machine” that I created through a year-long process of pre-production (idea generation), production (the film shoot itself), and post-production (editing, sound design, color grading). The second part of my Honors Thesis submission is an Artist’s Statement that explains the processes by which I created the film, outlining each aforementioned step in the production process. I also examine the avenues by which I was inspired to create this product, through my previous experiences …

[ ___ ] Was Here: An Exploration Of Graffiti In London, Alex Iannone
Honors Theses
In this thesis, I explore the art of graffiti through its culture and process as it thrives in London, England. I utilize footage of London as well as my own filmed performance art in order to reveal themes related to memory and remembrance that are expressed through both the creation and removal of graffiti. I seek to explain its existence and importance as it pertains to societal structures and placemaking. I delve into the topic of personal and spatial identity in relation to graffiti. This thesis works to investigate the controversies surrounding graffiti that act as catalysts for its creation …
Desde El Futuro: El Archivo Lemebel, Fernando A. Blanco
Desde El Futuro: El Archivo Lemebel, Fernando A. Blanco
Faculty Journal Articles
The reflection on Pedro Lemebel’s work and public persona has been rigorous and exhaustive. Critics have analyzed his narrative, his work on radio, performances, political and media activism (Blanco 2004, 2017, 2020, Blanco y Poblete 2010, Poblete 2018, Bianchi 2018, Martínez 2021). However, not much have been written about the documentaries Pedro Lemebel. Corazón en Fuga (Quense, 2008) and Lemebel (Reposi, 2019). The goal of this article is to reflect on both films as testimonial exercises to preserve the artist-self. The paper explores this notion of self-archiving: that of documenting the future with a clear awareness of mortality and oeuvre.
Vladimir Mayakovsky’S Agit-Semitism, Ludmila Lavine
Vladimir Mayakovsky’S Agit-Semitism, Ludmila Lavine
Faculty Journal Articles
Images of Jewishness as ethnic, cultural, and biblical categories in Vladimir Mayakovsky’s works are both plentiful and understudied. The present article attempts to bridge this gap while exploring the mechanisms that guide the poet’s responses to anti-Semitism. I begin by focusing on the function of the Exodus story in Stikhi ob Amerike(Verses about America), and then move to Mayakovsky’s “agitational” works: his collaboration on the film Evrei na zemle(Jews on the Land, 1927), and his poems ““Evrei (Tovarishcham iz OZETa)” (“Jew [To Comrades from OZET],” 1926) and “‘Zhid’” (“‘Yid’,” 1928). I argue that, while Mayakovsky continues the established …
Little Trees, Maxwell Kane
Little Trees, Maxwell Kane
Honors Theses
I believe in the power of film as a medium of storytelling. My desire to head a year-long production as well as create a moving story that underlined my interest in sibling relationships motivated me to create a short film as my honors thesis. My film, Little Trees, emphasizes themes such as alienation and growth within a broken household. My ultimate goal is to become an artist who creates meaningful cinema by telling deeply personal stories, and creating Little Trees was a successful first step in that process.
"It Came In Little Waves": Feminist Imagery In Chantal Akerman's Je, Tu, Il, Elle +, Staci C. Dubow
"It Came In Little Waves": Feminist Imagery In Chantal Akerman's Je, Tu, Il, Elle +, Staci C. Dubow
Honors Theses
Chantal Akerman writes, “she who seeks shall find, find all too well, and end up clouding her vision with her own preconceptions.”[1] This thesis addresses the films of Chantal Akerman from a theoretical feminist film perspective. There are many lenses through which Akerman’s rich body of work can be viewed, and I would argue that she herself never intended for it to be understood in just one way. I wish to situate Akerman’s films, in particular her 1974 Je, Tu, Il, Elle (1h 30m), within a discourse of other feminist film theorists and makers that were further rooted in …
Lang And Law: Analyzing Representations Of Law, Justice, And Violence In The Films Of Fritz Lang, Dante Fresse
Lang And Law: Analyzing Representations Of Law, Justice, And Violence In The Films Of Fritz Lang, Dante Fresse
Honors Theses
This thesis analyzes the representations of Law, Justice, and Violence in the German and American films of Fritz Lang. Through an overview of legal and social unrest in Germany and courtroom drama, criminal conviction, mob violence, and police corruption in America, Lang challenges the legitimacy of Law and shows how it is subverted by outside forces. At other times, Lang shows Law working in collusion with criminal agencies or against the interests of the public. In doing this, Lang’s films present images of legal decay in the urban sphere, prompted by anxieties which come about through spatial alienation, city structure, …
“Why (Not) Philosophy Of Stand-Up Comedy?”, Sheila Lintott
“Why (Not) Philosophy Of Stand-Up Comedy?”, Sheila Lintott
Faculty Contributions to Books
Stand-up comedy has been largely ignored by analytic philosophers of art, including those interested in comedy and humor. This is somewhat surprising, given the immense popularity of stand-up comedy and the rock star status enjoyed by some comedians today. I suspect that philosophers are just as likely to enjoy stand-up comedy as anyone else; in some cases (i.e. for some philosophers and some comedians), probably more likely. Here I offer some reasons philosophers of art should take the time to consider stand-up comedy and possible explanation for why philosophers of art have paid far less attention to stand-up comedy than …
Reframing The Archive: Vietnamese Refugee Narratives In The Post-9/11 Period, Mai-Linh Hong
Reframing The Archive: Vietnamese Refugee Narratives In The Post-9/11 Period, Mai-Linh Hong
Faculty Journal Articles
This article considers how recent narratives about Vietnamese refugees engage with the Vietnam War’s visual archive, particularly iconic photographs from the war and ensuing “boat people” crisis, and contribute to present-day discourses on American militarism and immigration. The article focuses on two texts, a National Public Radio special series about a US naval ship (2010) and Thanhha Lai’s Inside Out & Back Again (2011), which recounts a Vietnamese child’s refugee passage. By refiguring famous photojournalistic images from the war, the radio series advances a familiar rescue-and-gratitude narrative in which the US military operates as a care apparatus, exemplifying a cultural …
Matteo Garrone's Reality:The Big Brother Spectacle And Its Rupture, Anna Paparcone Bronner
Matteo Garrone's Reality:The Big Brother Spectacle And Its Rupture, Anna Paparcone Bronner
Faculty Journal Articles
In Garrone’s film, Reality, the protagonist Luciano Ciotola becomes obsessed with his participation in the reality TV show Big Brother to the point that his whole life turns into a spectacle. In Italian cinema studies no other scholar had yet analyzed this film, despite its success and the very engaging and up-to-date topic. In my article, at the diegetic level, I show that the spectator experiences an overlap and a (con)fusion between Luciano’s everyday reality and his life as a member of the reality TV show. However, keeping in mind Guy Debord’s seminal work The Society of the Spectacle and …

“All Data Is Credit Data,” Or, On Close Reading As A Reciprocal Process In Digital Knowledge Environments, John Hunter
“All Data Is Credit Data,” Or, On Close Reading As A Reciprocal Process In Digital Knowledge Environments, John Hunter
Faculty Journal Articles
The new knowledge environments of the digital age are oen described as places where we are all closely read, with our buying habits, location, and identities available to advertisers, online merchants, the government, and others through our use of the Internet. This is represented as a loss of privacy in which these entities learn about our activities and desires, using means that were unavailable in the pre-digital era. This article argues that the reciprocal nature of digital networks means 1) that the privacy issues that we face online are not radically different from those of the pre-Internet era, and 2) …
Organic Interfaces; Or, How Human Beings Augment Their Digital Devices, John Hunter
Organic Interfaces; Or, How Human Beings Augment Their Digital Devices, John Hunter
Faculty Journal Articles
It is a central premise of the advertising campaigns for nearly all digital communication devices that buying them augments the user: they give us a larger, better memory; make us more “creative” and “productive”; and/or empower us to access whatever information we desire from wherever we happen to be. This study is about how recent popular cinema represents the failure of these technological devices to inspire the enchantment that they once did and opens the question of what is causing this failure.
Using examples from the James Bond films, the essay analyzes the ways in which human users are frequently …

'Land Of Kami, Land Of The Dead': Paligenesis And The Aesthetics Of Religious Revisionism In Kobayashi Yoshinori's 'On Yasukuni', James Shields
Faculty Contributions to Books
In 2005, Japanese manga artist and conservative provocateur Kobayashi Yoshinori published a graphic work entitled Shin gōmanizumu sengen special: Yasukuniron (Neo-Gōmanism Manifesto Special: On Yasukuni), which tackles the much-debated ‘problem’ of Yasukuni Shrine, the militaristic religious complex that has become a lightning-rod for debates regarding Japanese historical memory – especially with regard to the military expansionism in East Asia that led to the Asia-Pacific War (1931–45). Frequently overlooked in discussions of Yasukuni, however, are a number of complex issues related to its religious doctrines – in particular, the interpretation of Shinto presented at Yasukuni and the dominant ideology of Japan’s …
