Provenance, Jennifer Ann Mutch Jun 2021

Provenance, Jennifer Ann Mutch

Honors Theses

Provenance is a term used in art history to refer to the record of an artwork’s life after its creation: the paper trail it has left through time showing who has purchased it, sold it, moved it, restored it, displayed it. Provenance’s intertwined stories use the things we leave behind, both physical and digital, to explore absence, mother-daughter relationships, formative friendships, and personal identities.

Jane is a middle-aged woman whose mother-in-law, an artist named Francie, has just passed away unexpectedly, leaving her home to be cleared out. As she sorts through a lifetime of belongings and paintings, she continues …

Les Chroniques De Toi / The Chronicles Of You, Marc Mazza Jun 2017

Les Chroniques De Toi / The Chronicles Of You, Marc Mazza

Honors Theses

In an alternate reality, technological advancements have enabled people to instantly access their memories. Everyone has a memory implant that records everything humans do, see, and hear. Although having instantaneous access to memory logs may appear to be a privilege, a certain couple will soon find out that the ability to replay past events is only damaging to one's psyche. Therefore this thesis proposes an analysis of how certain technological advancements can be detrimental to society rather than beneficial. Based on this context, I have used creative writing to address this topic. The following narrative explores the relationship between a …

Game Of Thrones And Ancient Rome, Alexander Arnold Jun 2016

Game Of Thrones And Ancient Rome, Alexander Arnold

Honors Theses

Ancient Roman society to this day influences different aspects of modern life. One of these aspects includes visual media and entertainment. Renowned by ancient sources and secondary sources as one of the most successful and powerful empires throughout history, the actions of the Romans inspire spectacles of amusement on contemporary award-winning movies and television shows. This would include movies like Gladiator and Spartacus along with television shows like Rome. This study investigates the award-winning, HBO television series Game of Thrones. The show is adapted from a novel series entitled A Song of Ice and Fire, written by George …

What's "Really Real": David Foster Wallace And The Pursuit Of Sincerity In Infinite Jest, Henry Clayton Jun 2015

What's "Really Real": David Foster Wallace And The Pursuit Of Sincerity In Infinite Jest, Henry Clayton

Honors Theses

Throughout his literary career, David Foster Wallace articulated the problems associated with the profusion of irony in contemporary society. In this thesis I assert that his novel Infinite Jest promotes a shift from the reliance on irony and subversion to a celebration of the principles of sincerity. The emphasis on sincerity makes Infinite Jest a landmark novel in the canon of American fiction, as Wallace employs postmodern formal techniques, such as irony, metafiction, fragmentation, and maximalism, in the interest of promoting traditional, non-ironic values of emotion, community, and spirituality. I draw from works of postmodern theory and criticism to bolster …

The Somewhat Less Than Super Adventures Of The Gargoyle And The Sparrow, Including The Pseudo-Comical Incident Of The Fan Fiction And What Transpired After, Thomas Arcuri Jun 2015

The Somewhat Less Than Super Adventures Of The Gargoyle And The Sparrow, Including The Pseudo-Comical Incident Of The Fan Fiction And What Transpired After, Thomas Arcuri

Honors Theses

What do superheroes do when they retire? Are they expected to go out and reinvent themselves, maybe write a heartwarming memoir--or worse, sit in silence for the rest of their days as if it never happened? Two out of three of those wouldn't make for very interesting theatre, so I went with Option 1. Frank and Eddie (formerly known as masked avengers The Gargoyle and The Sparrow) haven't seen much of each other since leaving the trade, so when Eddie visits his old comrade out of the blue after fifteen years, it's odd enough. When he pulls out a scheme …

Bridging The Works Of Horace, Catullus, Ovid, And Haydock, George Bishop Haydock Jun 2015

Bridging The Works Of Horace, Catullus, Ovid, And Haydock, George Bishop Haydock

Honors Theses

I wrote this thesis to explore the metrical poetry of Horace, Catullus, and Ovid, as well as my own poetry and short fiction. I parsed the Latin poems, word-by-word, and provided literal translations, as well as idiomatic translations of selected poems by Horace and Ovid. In order to link these translations to my short story, Into the Last Good Fight, I wrote three metrical poems that synthesize the themes, concepts, and structures of my story with the themes, concepts, and structures of the Latin poems. To provide an even stronger link between the Latin portion of my thesis and the …

The Girl In The Postfeminist World: Rethinking The Impact Of Chick-Lit Fiction, Sarah T. O'Connor Jun 2011

The Girl In The Postfeminist World: Rethinking The Impact Of Chick-Lit Fiction, Sarah T. O'Connor

Honors Theses

This thesis discusses “chick-lit” series in relation to popular culture, adolescent development, and feminist theory. The role of the female in the United States is currently dominated by both neo-liberal and conservative postfeminist ideology. Postfeminism advocates female empowerment via consumption, sexual attractiveness and physical beauty, while at the same time valorizing passive femininity and the roles of wife and mother. Chick-lit fiction provides a means by which postfeminist messages can be examined as they are presented to adolescent girl audiences, and reveals that the influence of this discourse over female subjectivity is inherently patriarchal. As a genre, chick lit is …
