Graduate Student Portfolios, Professional Papers, and Capstone Projects
This master's portfolio, "'My Body Is Fertile Ground': Exploring Relational Agriculture Through Gender, Body, and Local Food Policy," explores the concept of relational agriculture through multiple forms of practice. It comprises three parts: a personal essay discussing the author's experiences with the land as a young woman with a turbulent relationship with her own body; a literature review on gender dynamics in alternative agricultural spaces; and a survey report and a USDA Census of Agriculture data brief produced during an internship with two local food entities.
The first piece, "My Body Is Fertile Ground," details the author's experience with an …

A Queer Take On Hell And The Hellmouth, Pre-Modern Era, Haley Brothers
Arts & Sciences Undergraduate Showcase
Taking a look at pre-modern depictions of hell and its entrance, the hellmouth, this presentation uses the imagery seen in these pieces to bring about a new perspective on how hell may have been seen back when it was first being drawn up. Through a queer lens, these concepts are explored to have a deeper meaning as it applies to gender equality through divine punishment, all as seen in art that was made to depict the concepts of hell and the hellmouth when they were made with such detail. This project explores the possibility of concepts born hundreds of years …

Religious Queer Trans-Nationalism: A Zine And Theory, Eli Butler
Religious Queer Trans-Nationalism: A Zine And Theory, Eli Butler
Student Zines
From the author:
The relationship between religion and its institutions, sexuality, and gender is both historically and personally complex, and the intricacy and discourse between these constructs disproportionally affects religious queer and transgender communities.
The "Divine Transgender" concept, embraced by a growing community of proudly religious trans and gender non-conforming people, views bodies that identify with these categories as enlightened to break down restrictive gender binaries and undergo a spiritual self-realization process in the form of transition, becoming closer to God during the journey. This zine aims to creatively and imaginatively manage these relationships and educate about the ways religions …
1. Beyond Pink And Blue: A Zine Celebrating Trans Childhood, Eli Butler
1. Beyond Pink And Blue: A Zine Celebrating Trans Childhood, Eli Butler
Student Zines
From the author:
Trans childhood has long been infantilized, positioning trans children as passive and powerless beings in need of adult (and governmental) supervision and political intervention – an infantilization which is grounded in cisnormative and heteronormative beliefs about childhood innocence and purity.
Trans children are often seen as disruptive to the social order, and their existence is met with fear, hostility, and punishment. Against this backdrop, trans childhood has become a site of resistance, a space where trans children can challenge and subvert normative understandings of gender and sexuality.
As a former trans child turned trans adult, I created …

Louise Farrenc: A Woman Composer's Voice Rising Out Of Obscurity, Allika Polowchak
All Zyzzogeton Presentations
Louise Farrenc (1804-1875) was a prolific composer, performer, and teacher of art music in Romantic-era France. Widely regarded during her lifetime for her incredible natural talent and hard work, her compositions fell into obscurity after her death due to general disinterest in women’s contributions to art. As Louise Farrenc started to become more recognized in the later 20th century, efforts were focused on reviving her instrumental works, but little is known about her choral and vocal pieces to this day.
