Family Affairs Newsletter 2004-12-01, Jean Vermette

Family Affairs newsletter (2004-2016)

FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.

The contemporary American teLevision industry may give the mistaken impression of having invented the gay sensibility with Queer as Folk and Six Feet Under. It might come as a surprise to a contemporary-driven media that American and European film narratives about gays before the nineties do have a history and include such classics as Suddenly Last Summer, Midnight Cowboy, Cruising, Death in Venice, Prick Up Your Ears, Taxi zum Klo, and many others. And gay art films from other cultures have far outpaced the American mainstream's need not to be shocked by nontraditional sexual behavior with the more recent portrayals …

Meridians: Feminism, Race, Transnationalism

We are living in an age when it is now more possible than it ever was to overcome barriers of language, culture, distance to communicate both to strangers and to loved ones. Information proliferates and is disseminated at light speed in a dizzying zigzag of advanced Internet and telecommunications. And yet, at the same time, the global community is perhaps more divided today than it ever was and those who suffer most are not surprisingly the poor and the dispossessed....

Gender, Discourse, And Desire In Twentieth-Century Brazilian Women's Literature, Cristina Ferreira-Pinto Feb 2004

Gender, Discourse, And Desire In Twentieth-Century Brazilian Women's Literature, Cristina Ferreira-Pinto

Purdue Studies in Romance Literatures

This study by Cristina Ferreira-Pinto explores the poetic and narrative strategies twentieth-century Brazilian women writers use to achieve new forms of representation of the female body, sexuality, and desire. Female writers discussed include: Gilka Machado, Lygia Fagundes Telles, Marcia Denser, and Marina Colasanti. While creating new forms, these writers are also deconstructing cultural myths of femininity and female behavior. In order to understand these myths, the book also presents new readings of some male-authored canonical novels by Jose de Alencar, Machado de Assis, Manuel Antonio de Almeida, and Aluisio Azevedo. The specific focus on female sexuality and desire acknowledges the …

If Music Be The Food Of Love Play On!, Buffalo Gay Men's Chorus

Programs

"Love Thy Neighbor" is a phrase that most of us have grown up with as part of our Judeo-Christian heritage. Although few of us here tonight have probably ever been totally consistent in going beyond merely tolerating those we don't like or agree with, the word "neighbor" resonates more deeply than a short-term or casual relationship. Even as metaphor, "neighbor" suggests the kind of long-term proximity requiring a consistent attempt not to offend, a certain form of behavioral restraint with the knowledge that, in most cases, our neighbors are going to be there the next day, no matter what we …
