Dry Bones Connected: Can Dead Bible Study Live Again?, Reta Halteman Finger
Biblical, Religious, & Philosophical Studies Educator Scholarship
In the early 1970s, a group of six evangelical women in Chicago began meeting. Their topic of conversation? The emerging secular movement of feminism and what it might mean in a Christian context. These discussions would eventually lead to the Daughters of Sarah, a mid-20th century American journal for the particular audience of Christian feminists. Daughters of Sarah published some of the earliest religious scholarship on the topic.

Feminist Criticism Of Classical Rhetoric Texts: A Case Study Of Gorgias' Helen, Susan L. Trollinger
Feminist Criticism Of Classical Rhetoric Texts: A Case Study Of Gorgias' Helen, Susan L. Trollinger
English Faculty Publications
Despite the diversity of claims feminist scholars of antiquity advance, they share at least one preoccupation: the critique of patriarchy. That is, they challenge "the manifestation and institutionalization of male dominance over women" (Lerner 239) enacted in primary and secondary texts. The particular methods by which they make their critiques of women's subjugation vary as much as their claims, but most can be classified into one of two categories according to their broad interests in woman as a reader or as a writer of classical texts. Using Elaine Showalter's classifications, for example, we can group most of this scholarship under …

Challenging Law, Establishing Differences: The Future Of Feminist Legal Scholarship, Martha Albertson Fineman
Challenging Law, Establishing Differences: The Future Of Feminist Legal Scholarship, Martha Albertson Fineman
Faculty Articles
I begin with my version of the ideally antagonistic interaction of feminist theory with the law. I locate my discussion between the extremes of grand theory and unique experience. I consider the central, pressing task of feminist theory to be challenging existing law and legal doctrines through the articulation and establishment of a theory of difference. In this essay I divide my discussion of the theory of difference into two sections. The first section concerns the theoretical and political necessity of establishing the differences between men and women. Articulation of the extent of this manifestation of difference illustrates that the …

"Dark Lady And Fair Man": The Love Triangle In Shakespeare's Sonnets And Ulysses, Michelle Burnham
"Dark Lady And Fair Man": The Love Triangle In Shakespeare's Sonnets And Ulysses, Michelle Burnham
English
The article discusses the novel "Ulysses" by the Irish author James Joyce, and argues that he used sonnets by the dramatist and poet William Shakespeare suggesting love triangles between the poet, a dark lady, and a young man as a model for the love triangle between the characters Leopold Bloom, Molly Bloom, and Blazes Boylan. Joyce's interest in adultery as a literary theme is also touched on.
Women, Men, And Education In A Changing World, Nancy Topping Bazin
Women, Men, And Education In A Changing World, Nancy Topping Bazin
Women's & Gender Studies Faculty Publications
When anyone talks about change, there are many people who feel afraid. People fear chaos and uncertainty, both of which may accompany change. Fears of technological change are expressed in innumerable science fiction books and films; fears of changes in governmental systems are expressed in fantasies such as George Orwell's 1984. Fears of feminism may be expressed in comic books, films, dystopian fiction, or conversation. Women and men who fear feminist ideas have nightmare visions of female-dominated societies where women treat men as many misogynist men have treated women or where, to their horror, women find ways of not needing …
