Max Silberschmidt, Professor Emeritus of History at the University of Zurich, is a member of the 'Board of Advisors of the Swiss American Historical Society. His life long occupation with the Anglo-Swiss world in general and the United States in particular and his achievements in this field have been recognized by the general editor of the Library of European Civilization series who honored Professor Silberschrnidt by asking him to write the present volume for that series. Its forrnat determined among other things the length of Professor Silberschmidt's book, as well as, to a degree, its character. His work is in …

Three Years in the Army of the Potomac is the title of Rudolf Aschmann's 1865 memoir of his lengthy service in the First U.S. Sharpshooter Regiment and it has been translated from the German for the first time in Heinz Meier's edition. Its appearance in English after so long a period of obscurity (Bruce Catton does not even list it in his bibliography for the Potomac trilogy) will not provoke any interpretative reassessment of the military history of the American Civil War; it does not even contribute data previously unknown. But that does not matter; the account is nonetheless very …

Major Sources Of Genealogical Information, Paul Anthon Nielson A. G.
Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter
Genealogical research in Switzerland is unique in many aspects because of several national characteristics. The physical terrain and political neutrality of Switzerland have virtually withstood the plagues of war which have ravaged the continent. Four offical languages - German, French, Italian, and Romansch - are spoken in many dialects by the Germanic and Latin peoples who are united through the Swiss Confederation. Caatholicism and the protestant Swiss Reformed Church are two predominant religions. Finally, and perhaps most important of all, Swiss rights of citzenship (Heimatberechtigung) are based on the medieval form jus sanguinis, the lineage of an individual.

Thompson Document 26: Letter From Henrietta Thompson To Tun Shein, Henrietta Thompson
Henrietta Thompson Papers
A letter from Henrietta Thompson to Tun Shein, which is evidently in response to a letter Tun Shein had sent her. Thompson mentions some of their mutual acquaintances and asks whether either Tun Shein or his wife Lulu recognize any of the names on a list of Walkout participants who were then presumably still living in Burma, but whom she had been unable to meet during her brief visit.

Some Glimpses Of The Past: The Swiss Benevolent Society Of Chicago 1872-19972, Leo Schelbert

Only some 130 years ago Chicago, now a sprawling metropolis of the Midwest, began to grow from a small prairie seaport on lake Michigan into a thriving American city. Many Swiss immigrants followed the trail of the thousands of newcomers to the emerging town who either hailed from the Atlantic seaport states and from Midwestern rural communities or who had crossed the Atlantic to become settlers of the white man's New world. By 1870 the city counted some 298,977 inhabitants, at the same date some 1,435 Swiss had settled in Cook County, many of whom lived in Chicago.

Excerpts from the address given by Dr. Hans Muller, Cultural Counselor of the Embassy of Switzerland in Washington, D.C., at the Eighth Annual Meeting of November 20, 2971.
At the annual meeting of the SAHS Dr. Hans Muller not only played the role of gracious host, but also presented to those assembled a perceptive analysis relating to Swiss cultural life. It was a precise, fast-moving, and highly informed and informative presentation which opened with these words:

Dear Compatriots and Friends:
I is the major task of this newsletter to report to the members of the SAHS on the eighth annual meeting which was held on November 20, 1971, at the Swiss Embassy in Washington. Some twenty people attended and much important business was transacted. The participants very much wished that more of you could have been there to help in the decision-making process and to enjoy the gracious and cultured hospitality extended to the SAHS by Dr. and Mrs. Hans Muller.

Rudolf Braun's study of the assimilation problems of Italian workers in Switzerland has two outstanding qualities which are rarely found together in the same work: It meets the strict professional standards of modern sociological research, but it is also written with the heart and therefore reads in its main parts like a captivating novel.
Neoplatonism And The Florentine Renaissance, Donald L. De Merchant
Neoplatonism And The Florentine Renaissance, Donald L. De Merchant
All Master's Theses
This thesis demonstrates the correspondence between the visual arts and the literary sources of a given period in art history. During the Florentine Renaissance this correspondence lay between the Neoplatonism of Marsilio Picino and Giovanni Pico della Mirandola and the Visual art of the predominant artists; specifically, Sandro Botticelli and Michelangelo Buonarrotti. The impulse that is common to these creative minds is the Neoplatonic conception or the visual image. It is through a study or this tacit dimension that we are able to some extent to view the meaning of Renaissance art.

The Sacheverell Affair : Its Causes And Implications, Robert A. Kester
Honors Theses
The Sacheverell Affair of 1709-10 is a much overlooked event in English history. It was not significant in itself, being a rather trivial incident, but was significant for its far-reaching implications, in terms of its impact on both the political situation in Britain and diplomacy on the continent.
