The Greek Word "Porneia" In The Matthean Exception Clauses, Philip R. Leineweber
The Greek Word "Porneia" In The Matthean Exception Clauses, Philip R. Leineweber
Senior Honors Theses
Matthew 5:32 and 19:9 present an interesting exegetical discussion concerning the acceptability and permissibility of divorce. These verses provoke interest because of their inclusion of an exception clause seemingly allowing for a permissible divorce. The verses state the unlawfulness of divorce “except in the case of porneia.” Porneia is the word around which this discussion revolves and its meaning differs vastly depending upon the interpreter. The word is interpreted specifically as adultery during the betrothal period and also as sexual promiscuity and immorality on the other. This thesis explains both views and then seeks to offer all relevant evidence by …

Niebuhr’S Immoral Society And Bellah’S Good Society: A Conversation About Moral Man, Harlan Stelmach
Niebuhr’S Immoral Society And Bellah’S Good Society: A Conversation About Moral Man, Harlan Stelmach
Collected Faculty and Staff Scholarship
The title of my paper is an indication of where I began my thinking about this project. I was convinced from the start that Niebuhr’s and Bellah’s most significant disagreement would be how they viewed the role of collective life. Second, I assumed that they would have their most significant area of agreement on the moral capacity and responsibility of individuals. If you focus on Niebuhr’s early work, especially in Moral Man and Immoral Society and Bellah’s mature work today, these assumptions are generally true. Further, I still expected some broad lines of continuity in the work of these two …

Marx And The Bible: José Miranda’S Critique Of The Philosophy Of Oppression, James Shields
Marx And The Bible: José Miranda’S Critique Of The Philosophy Of Oppression, James Shields
Faculty Journal Articles
This paper critically examines the liberation theology of José Porfirio Miranda, as expressed in his Marx and the Bible (1971), with a focus on the central idea (and subtitle) of this work: the “Critique of the Philosophy of Oppression.” Miranda’s critique is examined via certain key tropes such as “power,” “justice,” and “freedom,” both in the context of late twentieth-century Latin American society, and in the state of the “post-Christian” and “post-Marxist” world more generally, vis-à-vis contemporary liberal justice theory. Close examination of the potentialities, paradoxes and subtle evasions in Miranda’s critique leads not to the conclusion that Miranda does …

The Ethics Of Driving, Amy E. Marga
The Ethics Of Driving, Amy E. Marga
Faculty Publications
The concept of “neighbor” takes on entirely new meanings in our mobile society. Who becomes my neighbor when I am behind the wheel? What is the consequence of my driving to my neighbors around the globe? What about the impact on our nonhuman “neighbors”? The ethics of driving has many dimensions for the Christian person of goodwill.

Does Deuteronomy 32:17 Assume Or Deny The Reality Of Other Gods?, Michael Heiser
Does Deuteronomy 32:17 Assume Or Deny The Reality Of Other Gods?, Michael Heiser
Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (1973-2015)
Deuteronomy 32, the Song of Moses, is well known among biblical scholars for its textual, linguistic, and translation difficulties. l Attention to Deut 32 has tended to focus on vv. 8-9, and 43 in light of fragments of those verses recovered at Qumran and their disagreement with the Masoretic Text (MT).' Though conceptually related to these verses and briefly discussed in commentaries, Deut 32.17 has received no concentrated attention in scholarly journals. Given the divergent ways the verse has been handled by Bible translators, Deut 32.17 deserves consideration.
A Primary Human Challenge, Carroy U. Ferguson
A Primary Human Challenge, Carroy U. Ferguson
Carroy U "Cuf" Ferguson, Ph.D.
We may ask why, at both the individual and collective levels, it has seemed so difficult for us to choose to evolve our human games with Joy. There is no one answer for such a question, for each of us has the gift of free will. I will suggest, however, that built into our human games is what I call a primary human challenge. That primary human challenge is a dynamic tension, flowing from our creative urge for the freedom “to be” who we really are in our current physical form, and simultaneously to embrace our responsibility for our Being-ness.

Anxious faces gather at the entrance to La Grande Mosquée de Sanankoroba, an imposing cement structure amongst small mud homes, awaiting the imam’s decision. He is not a mujtahid , but offers fatwas nonetheless; today’s is on birth control. Men crowd around—and a few women at the rear—to hear him speak out against birth control, against the use of oral contraception, for being against Islam and against God’s plan. And when his speech finishes, the faces disappear, back into their homes, and little discussion ensues. Instead, men return to their wives to share the verdict, to denounce family planning as …

The Resurrection Of Jesus And The Talpiot Tomb, Gary R. Habermas
The Resurrection Of Jesus And The Talpiot Tomb, Gary R. Habermas
Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (1973-2015)
The authors in this volume argue that severe problems beset the Talpiot tomb hypothesis. Rarely is this more apparent than when this proposal purports to address the known data regarding the early church's claims that Jesus' burial tomb was empty and that He later appeared to His disciples in a resurrected body. In this chapter, we will compare the Talpiot hypothesis to the accredited information that contemporary research has confirmed on these topics.
