From Biology To Consciousness To Morality, Ursula Goodenough, Terrence W. Deacon

Social animals are provisioned with prosocial orientations that operate to transcend self-interest. Morality, as used here, describes human versions of such orientations. We explore the evolutionary antecedents of morality in the context of emergentism, giving considerable attention to the biological traits that undergird awareness and our emergent human forms of mind. We suggest that our moral frames of mind emerge from our primate prosocial capacities, transfigured and valenced by our symbolic languages, cultures, and religions.

The ‘Earth-Dwellers’ And The ‘Heaven-Dwellers’ In Revelation: An Overlooked Interpretive Key, A. Boyd Luter
The ‘Earth-Dwellers’ And The ‘Heaven-Dwellers’ In Revelation: An Overlooked Interpretive Key, A. Boyd Luter
Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (1973-2015)
Research and publication on the Book of Revelation has escalated to a frenetic pace. In such a climate, in which, seemingly, every exegetical and theological nuance has been treated from virtually every conceivable angle, it would seem unlikely that any material of significance would be overlooked. However, as will be seen, careful study of two overlooked groups in the Apocalypse, to whom we will refer, shorthand, as the "earth dwellers" and the "heaven dwellers," provides considerable insight in regard to both the exegesis and biblical theology of this challenging book. Further, building from the exegetical/biblical theology conclusions, it is possible …

Religious Naturalism And Naturalizing Morality, Ursula Goodenough
Religious Naturalism And Naturalizing Morality, Ursula Goodenough
Biology Faculty Publications & Presentations
I first offer some reflections on the term religious naturalism. I then outline how moral thought might be configured in the context of religious naturalism. It is proposed that the goal of morality is to generate a flourishing community and that humans negotiate their social interactions using moral capacities that are cultivated in the context of culture. Six such capacities are considered: strategic reciprocity, humaneness, fair–mindedness, courage, reverence, and mindfulness. Moral capacities are contrasted with moral susceptibilities, fueled by self–interest, and brought to the fore in times of stress and humiliation. The essay is in two parts. I first respond …

The 'P'-Word: Conversion In A Postmodern Environment, Brad Kallenberg
The 'P'-Word: Conversion In A Postmodern Environment, Brad Kallenberg
Religious Studies Faculty Publications
Allow me to write frankly about the “P”-word. There is great concern about the proliferation of the “P”-word. In the past decade, over 1,500 articles and 2,000 books have come into print bearing the "P"-word in their titles. Nearly 1,000 of these books are still in print. Everywhere we turn we find that we have been inundated with the “P”-word. And so we have come to fear for our culture. The "P"-word? “Postmodernism.”
Granted, postmodernism is a slippery concept; there are many versions, many postmodernisms. But should Christians fear postmodernism? To be sure, the modern era proved to be no …

Thinking About Eden: A Tribute To Herbert Morris, George P. Fletcher
Faculty Scholarship
This essay is an exercise in interpreting a revered, but neglected, text. I take as my object of study the story of Adam and Eve in Eden. My interest in these passages derives in large part from conversations with my mentor, Herb Morris, who taught me to appreciate the beauties and mysteries of this rich tale. For both us, the problem is explicating the deeper meaning of the story. Perhaps I put more emphasis on the original text than Morris does, but we share a common objective of understanding what the story can teach us about the human condition.

Development Of Catholic Moral Doctrine: Probing The Subtext, M. Cathleen Kaveny
Development Of Catholic Moral Doctrine: Probing The Subtext, M. Cathleen Kaveny
Journal Articles
A discussion on the contribution of Judge John T. Noonan’s works on moral doctrine to the study of Catholic moral theology. Professor Kaveny argues that Noonan’s writings have aided the development of Catholic moral doctrine by examining its rich living history and tradition. She notes that Noonan views the subject as a social historian who is interested in how Catholics have interpreted moral theology over time, tracing continuities and changes in their positions, and as a lawyer who is interested in learning how they have tried to find a balance between human dignity and the common good. Professor Kaveny addresses …
