Justice And Justification In The War On Terrorism, Emma Norman Nov 2006

Justice And Justification In The War On Terrorism, Emma Norman

Emma R. Norman

This paper offers a few preliminary reflections on some ethical implications stemming from the disconnect between the moral rhetoric and the reality of the War on Terrorism. I suggest that the Bush Administration certainly shares a large part of the responsibility for constantly attempting to justify a war that, by the standards of traditional just war theory, is almost impossible to see as just. However, I also suggest that part of the responsibility lies with a public that demands high ethical standards of its public officials, but appears to be ultimately unprepared to face the full consequences of acting ethically …

Against Transcendentalism: The Meaning Of Life And Buddhism, Stephen Asma

Stephen T Asma

From the 1970s cult TV show, Monty Python’s Flying Circus, to the current hit musical Spamalot, the Monty Python comedy troupe has been at the center of popular culture and entertainment. The Pythons John Cleese, Graham Chapman, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, Michael Palin, and Terry Gilliam are increasingly recognized and honored for their creativity and enduring influence in the worlds of comedy and film. Cooperation, ‘Ought Morally’, And Principles Of Moral Harmony, Brian Kierland Feb 2006

Cooperation, ‘Ought Morally’, And Principles Of Moral Harmony, Brian Kierland

Brian Kierland

There is a theory that one ought morally to do the best one can, when ‘best’ is suitably interpreted. There are also some examples in which, although every agent involved does the best she can, the group composed of them does not. Some philosophers think that these examples show the theory to be wrong. In particular, they think that such examples motivate a view which incorporates a requirement of cooperativeness in a particular way, though they disagree as to the exact nature of this requirement. This paper will argue both that such views are problematic and that the examples do …

A History Of Political Experience, Leslie Marsh Dec 2005

A History Of Political Experience, Leslie Marsh

Leslie Marsh

This book survives superficial but fails deeper scrutiny. A facile, undiscerning criticism of Lectures in the History of Political Thought (LHPT) is that on Oakeshott’s own account these are lectures on a non-subject: ‘I cannot detect anything which could properly correspond to the expression “the history of political thought”’ (p. 32). This is an entirely typical Oakeshottian swipe – elegant and oblique – at the title of the lecture course he inherited from Harold Laski. If title and quotation sit awkwardly we should remember that Oakeshott never prepared the text for publication – a fortiori he did not prepare it …

How To Predict Future Duration From Present Age, Bradley Monton, Brian Kierland Dec 2005

How To Predict Future Duration From Present Age, Bradley Monton, Brian Kierland

Brian Kierland

The physicist J. Richard Gott has given an argument which, if good, allows one to make accurate predictions for the future longevity of a process, based solely on its present age. We show that there are problems with some of the details of Gott's argument, but we defend the core thesis: in many circumstances, the greater the present age of a process, the more likely a longer future duration.

Institutions And Process, Danielle Lake Dec 2005

Institutions And Process, Danielle Lake

Danielle L Lake

The following pages explore the social reality of institutional lag. Since existence is processive, institutions founded on certain principles and circumstances must be subject to careful examination and subsequent adjustment when they no longer produce valued results. The social reality of institutional lag, however, has roots in a more personal reluctance to relinquish certitude and undergo change. Since growth is accomplished through such a process, the reluctance to address change and make adjustments must be addressed. Thus, this inquiry begins with the recognition and analysis of institutional lag, evolves into an analysis of the individual and, finally, discusses the complicated …

The A to Z of Logic introduces the central concepts of the field in a series of brief, non-technical, cross-referenced dictionary entries. The 352 alphabetically arranged entries give a clear, basic introduction to a very broad range of logical topics. Entries can be found on deductive systems, such as propositional logic, modal logic, deontic logic, temporal logic, set theory, many-valued logic, mereology, and paraconsistent logic. Similarly, there are entries on topics relating to those previously mentioned such as negation, conditionals, truth tables, and proofs. Historical periods and figures are also covered, including ancient logic, medieval logic, Buddhist logic, Aristotle, Ockham, …

Review Of Frisina: The Unity Of Knowledge And Action, Stephen C. Angle Dec 2005

Review Of Frisina: The Unity Of Knowledge And Action, Stephen C. Angle

Stephen C. Angle

Readers of this journal will find Warren G. Frisina’s The Unity of Knowledge and Action fresh and exciting for at least two reasons. First, it is an exemplary foray in global philosophy — that is, philosophy undertaken with an openness to the perspectives and contributions of philosophical traditions from around the globe. It goes beyond simple comparisons to engage in cross-cultural philosophical construction. Indeed, Frisina writes that “the very idea for this book was inspired by the philosophy underlying the Neo-Confucian scholar Wang Yangming’s famous slogan zhi xing he yi (the unity of knowledge and action)” [4].ii Second, the …

合宜的民主集中制, Stephen C. Angle

Stephen C. Angle

I intend to discuss Foucault’s and Heidegger’s critical diagnosis of Modernity emphasizing its continuities. Generally speaking, it is possible to argue that in Heidegger philosophical reflection assumes itself as essentially historical, while in Foucault’s case historical investigation assumes itself as an essentially philosophical task. Although recognizing the differences between Foucault’s and Heidegger’s general theoretical approaches, I argue that both consider that, in order to understand who we are today, it is necessary to elaborate a critical understanding of Modernity. In both cases, Modernity is viewed as a historical epoch characterized by humanism, i.e., by the projection of human beings as …

Can We Talk? Feminist Economists In Dialogue With Social Theorists, Julie A. Nelson Dec 2005

Can We Talk? Feminist Economists In Dialogue With Social Theorists, Julie A. Nelson

Julie A. Nelson

The article focuses on the issues regarding the social and political theory of feminism. It has been mentioned that political action will be dynamized rather than compromised by a more alive observation of economic organizations and activities. The author has suggested that feminist social theorists across the disciplines must join the several feminist economists who are dropping the negative one-size-fits-all prescription of protection from markets. It is essential to have more positive results in the complex contemporary economies.

Naturalism And Triviality, Attila Tanyi Dec 2005

Naturalism And Triviality, Attila Tanyi

Attila Tanyi

The paper examines Derek Parfit’s claim that naturalism trivializes the agent’s practical argument and therefore abolishes the normativity of its conclusion. In the first section, I present Parfit’s charge in detail. After this I discuss three possible responses to the objection. I show that the first two responses either fail or are inconclusive. Trying to avoid Parfit’s charge by endorsing irreductionist naturalism is not a solution because this form of naturalism is metaphysically untenable. Non- descriptive naturalism, on the other hand, does not answer the pressing concern behind Parfit’s charge. I conclude that we had better turn to the third …

An Essay On The Desire-Based Reasons Model, Attila Tanyi Dec 2005

An Essay On The Desire-Based Reasons Model, Attila Tanyi

Attila Tanyi

The dissertation argues against the view that normative reasons for action are grounded in desires. It first works out the different versions of the Model. After this, in the next three chapters, it presents and discusses three arguments against the Model, on the basis of which, it concludes that the Model gives us the wrong account of normative practical reasons.
