“The Translatability Of Interjections: A Case Study Of Arabic-English Subtitling”, Mohammad Ahmad Thawabteh Mat

Mohammad Ahmad Thawabteh MAT

This paper examines the translatability of Arabic interjections into English subtitling, illustrated with a subtitled Egyptian film, State Security subtitled by Arab Radio and Television (ART). Theoretical framework regarding both Audiovisual Translation (AVT) and interjections is first discussed. The significance of interjections is approached from the perspective of technical and translation paradigms. The study shows that although technical issues limit the subtitler’s choices, they have very little to do with translating interjections because they are typically short words. With regard to translation, the study shows that the subtitler may opt for three major translation strategies: 1) an avoidance of source …

The Horrors Of A Disconnected Existence: Frustration, Despair And Alienation In The Poetry Of T. S. Eliot, Oscar C. Labang

Dr. Oscar C. Labang

The expression of modern existence as a disconnected entity with shocking and distressful consequences is reflected in the writings of many modernist writers, but it seems to take centre stage in the poetry of T. S. Eliot. The decline of values and the multifarious problems of the twentieth century have caused modern man to create parentheses that detach them from each other, from society, from nature and even from themselves. This paper examines the horrifying consequences of life in a chaotic and disconnected universe on human existence from the perspectives of frustration, despair, and alienation. From a Structuralist theoretical standpoint, …

Nah, We Straight: An Argument Against Code-Switching, Vershawn A. Young Jun 2010

Nah, We Straight: An Argument Against Code-Switching, Vershawn A. Young

Vershawn A Young

Although linguists have traditionally viewed code-switching as the simultaneous use of two language varieties in a single context, scholars and teachers of English have appropriated the term to argue for teaching minority students to monitor their languages and dialects according to context. For advocates of code-switching, teaching students to distinguish between “home language” and “school language” offers a solution to the tug-of-war between standard and nonstandard Englishes. This paper argues that this kind of code-switching may actually facilitate the illiteracy and academic failure that educators seek to eliminate and can promote resistance to Standard English rather than encouraging its use

Spice Race: The Island Princess And The Politics Of Transnational Appropriation, Carmen Nocentelli May 2010

Spice Race: The Island Princess And The Politics Of Transnational Appropriation, Carmen Nocentelli

Carmen Nocentelli

Recent scholarship has located John Fletcher’s The Island Princess (1621) in the historical context of the early modern “spice race” but has not addressed the extent to which the intra-European tensions staged in the play also enact an international contest for symbolic and cultural resources. Taking as its starting point Fletcher’s acknowledged sources, Bartolomé Leonardo de Argensola’s Conquista de las islas Malucas (1609) and Louis Gédoyn de Bellan’s “Histoire memorable de Dias espagnol, et de Quixaire princesse de Moluques” (1615), this essay places The Island Princess in the thick of an appropriative process that moved from Portugal’s periphery to Spain, …

Pi(O)Us Medievalism Vs. Catholic Modernism: The Case Of George Tyrell, Richard Utz Jan 2010

Pi(O)Us Medievalism Vs. Catholic Modernism: The Case Of George Tyrell, Richard Utz

Richard Utz

Investigates the use of "medievalism" by George Tyrell in his book, Medievalism. A Reply to Cardinal Mercier (1908). Tyrell, who argues in favor of a modern(ist), intelligent, Catholic faith, sees the Church's reorientation toward the Middle Ages in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century as a misdirected form of originalism, which he rejects as "medievalism."

Postmodernism, Processing, And The Profession: Towards A Theoretical Reading Of Minimal Standards, Melanie Griffin Jan 2010

Postmodernism, Processing, And The Profession: Towards A Theoretical Reading Of Minimal Standards, Melanie Griffin

Melanie Griffin

While the ramifications of minimal standards processing for practice are well-documented, the theoretical questions which Greene and Meissner's 2005 article "More Product, Less Process" raises are not. This article seeks to address the broader ideological and theoretical questions involved in recent minimal standards processing recommendations through analysis of Greene and Meissner’s original article and the immediate responses and case studies which it generated, in order to relate this body of literature to theory-driven notions of archival administration.4 By identifying theoretical issues in writings on MPLP rather than focusing on practice alone, it is possible to move beyond the pejorative, reductive …
