The Luxury Of Doubt: A Study Of The Relationship Between Imagery And Theme In Emily Dickinson's Poetry, Norman Gregor Nov 1955

The Luxury Of Doubt: A Study Of The Relationship Between Imagery And Theme In Emily Dickinson's Poetry, Norman Gregor

English Language and Literature ETDs

Emily Dickinson's protagonists, when they are most moving and have the greatest complex reality, are caught between the agony of death and the agony of life. Analogous terms are non-being and being, renunciation and experience, unreality and reality, sterility and fruition, extinction and redemption. Renunciation is a major pattern, but in the act of renunciation the Dickinson protagonist may be discerned grasping for fulfillment. Similarly, when she strains toward fulfillment, she can simultaneously yearn for negation. Her reaching two ways at once is manifest in her qualifications. When the subject is life, her talk is tinged with death; and when …

A Study Of The Moral Tone Of Restoration Comedy, Herbert Robinson Blackwell Jul 1955

A Study Of The Moral Tone Of Restoration Comedy, Herbert Robinson Blackwell

Master's Theses

The so called "Restoration period" in English literature stands as an age of comic production that ranks as one of the most brilliant in the history of the English stage, second perhaps only to the preceding Elizabethan period. Restoration comedy has been famed for its indecency and immorality, and critical Judgment has always been influenced by concern over the "excesses" which the playwrights introduced into their works.

Morality is a relative term. What is sinful in one age is commonly accepted in another. Semantic differences may cause different moral connotations to be placed on certain words. Thus, in considering whether …

The Literary Manifestation Of A Liberal Romanticism In American Jazz, Hugh L. Smith Jr. Jun 1955

The Literary Manifestation Of A Liberal Romanticism In American Jazz, Hugh L. Smith Jr.

English Language and Literature ETDs

Among the cultural forces of growing influence in America is the increasing scholarly and literary attention being given to the native American art form, Jazz. This dissertation will illustrate that Jazz owes its recognition to American literature and that all genres of the literature of Jazz have adopted an attitude of Liberal Romanticism in their treatment of Jazz. This attitude is in keeping with the outlook developed by the musicians themselves.

"Antony And Cleopatra" And "All For Love": A Comparison, Josephine Stewart May 1955

"Antony And Cleopatra" And "All For Love": A Comparison, Josephine Stewart

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

The study of Antony and Cleopatra and All for Love was made for the purpose of comparing an Elizabethan drama with a neo-classic play of the Restoration period. Reference was made to the history of the chief characters, and sources of the common plot were examined. Analysis of plot structure of each work furthered the comparison. The central characters as pictured by Dryden and Shakespeare have been contrasted. Comparison of a well-constructed play of the seventeenth century and a masterpiece of the Elizabethan era confirms in the mind of the writer the universal appeal and preeminence of Shakespeare.

Religion In The Life And Works Of Longfellow, Morris Edward Cather Apr 1955

Religion In The Life And Works Of Longfellow, Morris Edward Cather

Master's Theses

An author's work is generally colored by the presence or the lack of religious convictions. The poetry and prose of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow indicate a deep-seated faith in God. Although this faith is most clearly manifested in the works of the man, its source is found in the life and character of the poet himself. It is the aim of this paper to discover the various contributing factors, to ascertain their effect upon the poet and his writings, and to draw certain conclusions concerning his religious faith.

Theatrical Criticism Of Addison And Steele, Virginia Marion Lewis Apr 1955

Theatrical Criticism Of Addison And Steele, Virginia Marion Lewis

Master's Theses

The purpose of this paper in to bring together in one body all, or as many as possible, of the references made by Addison and Steele to the theater in The Tatler, The Spectator, and Tho Guardian. In order to do this, it has been necessary to scan all of the papers included in these three periodicals to find those which contained a mention of the theater, for only rarely did Addison or Steele devote an entire paper to any one subject. It is hoped, therefore, that in going through these essays no significant comments on the theater have been …

Christopher Smart And A Song To David, Charles Parish Jan 1955

Christopher Smart And A Song To David, Charles Parish

English Language and Literature ETDs

The purpose of this study is to throw light upon what the author feels to be one of the greatest lyric poems of the eighteenth century and upon the character and mind of its creator. Both A Song to David and its author, Christopher Smart, have long been regarded as enigmas. That “mad” Smart should have been capable of writing the strange and beautiful Song has captured the imagination of romantic and realist alike. The Song has been considered almost always as an isolated miracle, as the mysterious and impassioned product of a man who went mad because he took …

The Compoti Of The Bursars Of Whalley Abbey, Lancashire, 1508-1536, James A. Brundage

History Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to investigate the condition of early sixteenth-oentury monasticism in England as it appears from the evidence in the financial accounts of the bursars of Whalley Abbey. The Whalley Abbey compoti provide a particularly fruitful field of study since a rather considerable body of documents from this Cistercian monastery have been preserved and a large number of these documents have already been published.

Wallace Gould: A Critical Study, Pollyanna Martin Foard Jan 1955

Wallace Gould: A Critical Study, Pollyanna Martin Foard

Theses & Honors Papers

The aim of this study has been to collect all the available bibliographical and biographical data about Wallace Gould in an effort to estimate the nature and significance of his poetry. The focus of the paper is on the shaping forces of the poet's inspiration, and dI have attempted to show how the background and experience of the man have influenced the scope and material of his work.

No previous comprehensive study of Gould has been made. Thus, research materials were tedious to come by, and the conclusions of this paper may be question able. I have, however, had the …

The Popularity And Influence Of Shakespeare's English And Roman Historical Plays In America From The Beginnings To 1950, Ruth Warren Jan 1955

The Popularity And Influence Of Shakespeare's English And Roman Historical Plays In America From The Beginnings To 1950, Ruth Warren

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Poetry and romance in Shakespeare's non-historical plays have come into their own again with revivals of The Tempest directed by Margaret Webster and with the production of As You Like It, which features Katherine Hepburn. Unfortunately, the time limit of this paper has been set for the end of 1950, so it is only possible to mentin in passing Laurence Oliver's and Vivian Leigh's exciting and unique idea of presenting Shaw's Caesar and Cleopatra and Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra on alternate nights. In spite of early curtains, which make it necessary for the theatre-goer to eat his dinner in a …
