What Is Method And Why Does It Matter?, Michael A. Elliott, Claudia Stokes Dec 2002

What Is Method And Why Does It Matter?, Michael A. Elliott, Claudia Stokes

English Faculty Research

The recent emphasis on interdisciplinary scholarship—manifest in the resurgence of institutional programs like American studies and publications in cultural studies—has relocated both the literary critic and the literary text to unfamiliar territory. This new interest in broaching disciplinary limits has proved to be exciting and invigorating. Literary critics have turned their attention to media other than the written text, and nonliterary specialists, such as historians and sociologists, have used literary texts to support their own research. This book is a response to American literary interdisciplinary and attempts to raise, and address, the inevitable questions that emerge when disciplines collaborate: What can texts tell us about …

Annotated Bibliography Of Research In The Teaching Of English, Deborah Brown, Catherine Beavis, Judith Kalman, Macrina Gómez, Gert Rijlaarsdam, Anne D'Antonio Stinson, Melissa E. Whiting

Faculty Publications

Twice a year, in the May and November issues, RTE publishes a selected bibliography of recent research in the teaching of English. Most of the studies appeared during the six-month period preceding the compilation of the bibliography (January through June 2002 for the present bibliography), but some studies that appeared earlier are occasionally included. The listing is selective; we make no attempt to include all research and research-related articles that appeared in the period under review. Comments on the bibliography and suggestions about items for inclusion may be directed to the bibliography editors. We encourage you to send your suggestions …

Review Of American Women Of Letters And The Nineteenth-Century Sciences: Styles Of Affiliation By Nina Baym, Melissa J. Homestead Oct 2002

Review Of American Women Of Letters And The Nineteenth-Century Sciences: Styles Of Affiliation By Nina Baym, Melissa J. Homestead

Department of English: Faculty Publications

As in her previous books on nineteenth-century American women writers, Baym's most recent book presents an impressive survey and synthesis of women cultural producers and their products. Even though nineteenth-century American women had neither the education nor the opportunities to be research scientists in the modern sense (a sense that was only beginning to be formulated and institutionalized), Baym contends that they nevertheless "affiliated" themselves with the sciences and used print culture to promote science and (male) scientists to America as essential to its national identity. "Ceding most of the doing of science-the production of new scientific knowledge in the …

(Re)Viewing Teaching As Intellectual Work In English Studies: Insights From A Peer Review Of Teaching Project, Amy M. Goodburn Sep 2002

(Re)Viewing Teaching As Intellectual Work In English Studies: Insights From A Peer Review Of Teaching Project, Amy M. Goodburn

Department of English: Faculty Publications

This essay draws upon my experiences within a university peer review of teaching project, first as a participant and now as a faculty coordinator, to consider some of the issues raised when faculty create and use new genres for representing teaching as intellectual work in English Studies. I begin by describing my process of creating a course portfolio--a genre that asks teachers to document and assess student learning and performance within a particular course over a semester. I then discuss the external reviews that this course portfolio received when it was assessed by faculty within and outside of English Departments …
