Written Corrective Feedback In L2 Writing : Esol Student Attitudes About Focused And Unfocused Correction, Isa J. Keller

Culminating Projects in TESL

College students in an English as a Second Language (ESOL) advanced writing and grammar course value feedback on their writing. However, grammar feedback does not tend to lead to consistent application as demonstrated by correct grammar usage in their written work. This classroom-based research study examined the students’ attitudes regarding focused and unfocused written corrective feedback (WCF) and whether their attitudes were affected by receiving focused or unfocused feedback.

Twenty-two students participated in this study. The students were in two sections of an advanced writing and grammar class. Part of the students in each section received focused feedback and part …

Although there are numerous reasons to improve pronunciation instruction, the teaching of phonologic structures in English has become less popular among k-12 classrooms. This study proposes that the use of a relatively new technique may positively improve ESL students' pronunciation of American Standard English. This technique is known as shadowing. The data obtained was analyzed and evaluated in terms of phonological structures. The motivation to do this particular study came from previous research concerning word boundaries and phonological structures of consonants, in addition to my previous experience as an ESL tutor and instructor at SCSU. Students were making too many …

Computer Preferences And Listening In Web Tasks, Jaime Alfredo Hernandez-Moraga

Culminating Projects in TESL

The following study deals with findings from relations of students towards Web listening activities and vocabulary awareness in the listening skill. These relations rely on previous media listening experiences and score results given by Web listening tasks that students were exposed to. Thus, the main purpose is to establish a degree of students' awareness to such activities to find if the preferences influence on a vocabulary acquisition level when performing Web listening comprehension. In order to establish this relation, a background computer media preference survey was applied to create comparisons and correlations which determine the degree of interest in relation …

Distractor Patterns In K-12 Esl Reading Comprehension Multiple-Choice Tests, Brian E.J. Taylor

Culminating Projects in TESL

Teaching English as a second or foreign language (ESL/EFL) is a multi-faceted activity for both the teacher and the students. The multiple-choice question (MC) format is a popular testing method. There is disagreement about what skills can or cannot be tested in the MC test format. The criticisms of MC testing range from guessing, to forced selection due to presented options, test-taking abilities, and others. Strong distractors will require demonstrating or applying relevant knowledge and/or skill on the part of the test taker, which ultimately contribute to the validity of the test. Test-takers could easily eliminate distractors that are not …
