Using Professional Learning Communities For The Development Of Shared Governance, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe, William Phillips Nov 2011

Using Professional Learning Communities For The Development Of Shared Governance, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe, William Phillips

Hal Blythe

Among the many challenges of professional (faculty, administration, and staff) development is the implementation of shared governance. We propose a model involving professional learning communities that we are experimenting with in our College of Education. This new model provides faculty with decision-making power, a sense of cooperation and communication with the administration, compensation for their effort, a budget, and a large dose of satisfaction. Furthermore, this model could be effectively transferred to other university units.

Extending A Hand To Our Stakeholders: Examining The Risks Of Service-Learning Courses In Technical Communication Programs, Roger Munger

Roger Munger

Service learning classes in their various conceptions seem an excellent environment conducive to teaching our students sound technical communication principles. The essence of service-learning classes is the organized linking of academic study, community service, and reflection. Service-learning classes, thus, seem ideal for students to learn communication skills and gain valuable workplace experience. Moreover, through service-learning classes, technical communication programs can meet the needs of a particular community and establish strong relationships with various stakeholders. However, before we completely embrace service-learning pedagogies, we need to consider more fully the consequences. Without careful planning and supervision, service-learning courses place our programs, faculty, …

Participating In A Technical Communication Internship, Roger Munger

Roger Munger

Academic internships have long been an important component of many students' college education. Although internship programs have been around for over a century at some colleges, the importance of the academic internship has increased significantly in the past few years (Coco 2000). Employers today are seeking to hire people who can jump into a position and make an immediate contribution. They expect new hires to not only have a solid academic background but also workplace experience related to their profession. Students who have both are in demand.

Green Printing: A Guide To Environmentally Responsible Printing, Roger Munger

Roger Munger

Pressure from various green organizations (such as the Forest Stewardship Council and ForestEthics), government agencies, and environmentally aware consumers combined with the development of new vegetable-based materials have resulted in the availability of several alternatives to petroleum-derived chemicals for printing and paper made from wood pulp. These alternatives are increasingly price-competitive and a bargain when all costs to our environment are considered. Whether you print documents from your desktop computer or regularly contract with a printing company to produce 100,000 annual reports, user guides, or newsletters, you now have environmentally responsible printing choices. Such choices offer your company an opportunity …
