Pillar Ii In Practice: Police Capacity-Building In Oceania, Charles Hawksley, Nichole Georgeou

Charles M Hawksley

At the recent AusAID sponsored UN Strategy and Coordination Conference on the Regional Capacity to Protect, Prevent and Respond (May 17-18, Bangkok), the UN Secretary General’s Special Representative on Responsibility to Protect (R2P), Edward Luck, noted that while the three pillars of R2P are becoming better known, 90% of the academic work is on Pillar III (Intervention), even though it is comparatively rare. In contrast we know much less about Pillar II: The Responsibility to Assist. In this briefing paper the authors explore police capacity-building (“police-building”) in three developing states of Oceania and its relation to R2P. This activity forms …

Why Chinese Neo-Confucian Women Made A Fetish Of Small Feet, Aubrey L. Mcmahan

Grand Valley Journal of History

Abstract for “Why Chinese Neo-Confucian Women Made a Fetish of Small Feet

This paper explores the source of the traditional practice of Chinese footbinding which first gained popularity at the end of the Tang dynasty and continued to flourish until the last half of the twentieth century.[1] Derived initially from court concubines whose feet were formed to represent an attractive “deer lady” from an Indian tale, footbinding became a wide-spread symbol among the Chinese of obedience, pecuniary reputability, and Confucianism, among other things.[2],[3] Drawing on the analyses of such scholars as Beverly Jackson, Valerie Steele …

Lesbians And Their Mothers: A Taiwanese Experience, Meng-Ning Wang

Marriage and Family Therapy - Dissertations

Many studies, both in the United States and in Taiwan, have explored how the coming-out experience influenced LGBT individuals and their families, and some studies have also addressed how their familial relationships have been shaped because of the experience. As a Taiwanese who has studied family therapy in the United States, my personal experience as well as research and professional interest brought me to conduct this qualitative study focusing on the experience of coming out in mother-daughter relationships in Taiwan. Nine dyads of mothers and daughters were interviewed and provided their retrospective accounts of their experience of disclosure and how …

Understanding Africa’S China Policy: A Test Of Dependency Theory And A Study Of African Motivations In Increasing Engagement With China, Nkemjika E. Kalu Dec 2012

Understanding Africa’S China Policy: A Test Of Dependency Theory And A Study Of African Motivations In Increasing Engagement With China, Nkemjika E. Kalu

Department of Political Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

African states are increasingly engaging with China--politically, socially and economically--especially through the machinations of the Forum for China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC). This dissertation asserts that Africans are willing partners of the Chinese, motivated by their state-centric belief that engagement with China is in their national interest. This assertion contradicts the assumption of most literature to date that appears to borrow from the logic of dependency theory and presents African nations as pawns, subject to the demands of a dominant and exploitative China, who is benefiting at Africa’s expense. Economic trends from the decade before the launch of the FOCAC and the …

Just Sing What You Want To Say: The Importance Of Linguistic Tone In Bai Songs, Lisa Andrews

Masters Theses

The Bai people, a minority group in the People's Republic of China numbering at least 1.6 million, live mostly in the Dali Autonomous Prefecture in northwest Yunnan. Historically, Bai from the central region would gather annually at the base of Shibaoshan Mountain to sing partner style love songs in search for a suitable marriage partner; today, this time is marked by a three-day festival officially titled "Shibaoshan." The annual song competition invites skilled singers to spontaneously compose melodies in response to their counterpart, crafting lyrics to flatter or tease their singing partner. The study quantifies the close relationship between Bai …

A Study Of Japanese Animation, Michele Gibney Nov 2012

A Study Of Japanese Animation, Michele Gibney

Michele Gibney

This paper takes a sociological approach to the question of popular culture’s ability in Japan--specifically that of Japanese animation--to be reflective of the country's sociological concerns. This is not to say that all anime shows consciously reflect Japanese life, but by extrapolation of recurrent themes one can construct a model of certain sociological issues in Japan. The author split the paper up into five sections each of which tackles a different theme. These sections are: Education, Social and Class Differences, Environment, Post-Nuclear Visions, and An Emergent Feminism. The main point that the author conveys in each section is a way …

The Reversibility Of Art, Lucretius, Gravity And Semâ Bekirovic'sHow To Stop Falling, Allen Graham Nov 2012

The Reversibility Of Art, Lucretius, Gravity And Semâ Bekirovic'sHow To Stop Falling, Allen Graham

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

This paper reflects on art works recently displayed in an exhibition in the Lewis Glucksman Gallery, Cork, Ireland, in 2011. In particular it focuses on Semâ Bekirovic's video art work How to Stop Falling, in order to expand upon a theory of art's reversibility. The paper uses the work of the Roman philosopher Lucretius, along with Jacques Derrida's deconstructive encounter with Lucretius in his essay "Mes chances/My chances," to meditate on art's resistance to the entropic logic of the natural world. The paper also employs Lucretius alongside modern scientific understandings of the cosmos to reflect on Bekirovic's and others' engagement …

The Significance Of Literary History In The Evolution Of Literary Meta-Language, Han Qian Nov 2012

The Significance Of Literary History In The Evolution Of Literary Meta-Language, Han Qian

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Contemporary Chinese scholars usually take the linguistic turn as a major watershed in Western literary criticism, and this view takes the intrinsic transition in literary criticism and theory as a revolutionary change. The paper argues that the "scientific turn" of the 19th century weighs more in the literary criticism history, and that the linguistic turn is merely a necessary consequence of the scientific turn. The epistemological turn of 19th century's literary criticism redefined the objectives and functions of meta-language in literature, while the creation of modern universities and the evolution of scientific discourse also led literary criticism to the epistemological …

The Tension Between The Enlightenment And Cultural Identity In Postcolonial Context: With Wai-Lim Yip As A Focus, Yiqing Liu Nov 2012

The Tension Between The Enlightenment And Cultural Identity In Postcolonial Context: With Wai-Lim Yip As A Focus, Yiqing Liu

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

The awakening of self-consciousness and subjectivity resulted from the enlightenment demonstrates in the May 4th Movement as a radical criticism on tradition, and this criticism itself becomes a means to modernity. The enlightenment also resulted in the loss of Chinese cultural subjecthood, the consequence of which was felt strong in the post-colonial Taiwan and Hong Kong first. Among the intellectuals under the colonial culture, Wai-lim Yip believes that identification with Chinese culture in Hong Kong may reinstall the cultural identity of the colonized people and establish national identity. Identification with Chinese culture may prompt reflection on the constraints of the …

A Critical Survey Of The Researches On The Historical Materials Of Contemporary Chinese Literature, Xiuming Wu, Tao Zhang

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

The historical materials of contemporary Chinese literature serve as a new form of historical documents, and in general, the research in this field lags behind, although in the past half century some remarkable progresses have been made in both understanding and practice. The paper takes the current achievements as a start and reviews the present scholarship in the study of contemporary literary materials. First, the evolution of cognition in the researchers and the adjustment of research approach become eminent from the perspective of diachronic analysis and delineation. Secondly, the current studies in the area have been examined on the synchronic …

A Study Of Tan Ying's Reception Of And Reaction To The Zhexi School, Wei Xu Nov 2012

A Study Of Tan Ying's Reception Of And Reaction To The Zhexi School, Wei Xu

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

In the Qing dynasty, besides the Schools of Zhexi and Changzhou, Guangdong poets had also played an important role in the construction of ci poetics, among which Tan Ying, with his 177 Quatrains on Ci-Poems, could be considered as one of the most systematic and sophisticated critic-poets. Heavily influenced by the School of Zhexi, Tan Ying gave prominence to the exquisite and elegant nature of ci-poetry while also highlighting the expression of true emotion and personal integrity in ci-poetry as a rectifying measure for the desolateness and the overindulgence in rhetoric of Zhexi poetics. This paper analyzes Tan Ying's critical …

On The Formation Of Appreciative Criticism In Ancient China, Chunqing Li Nov 2012

On The Formation Of Appreciative Criticism In Ancient China, Chunqing Li

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Appreciative criticism is a form of practical criticism from the perspective of appreciative judgment, and a literary criticism activity on the basis of aesthetic taste and emotional experience. As a form of literary criticism, it emerged in West Han Dynasty and matured in East Han Dynasty in China, with Liu Xiang, Yang Xiong and Liu Xin being three important figures in the developmental process. Appreciative criticism was formed in the socio-historical context in which the change of taste on the part of imperial officialdom and scholar-officials was a key factor. The paper argues that an examination of the historical formation …

Problems With Contemporary Western Environmental Aesthetics, Yu Zhao Nov 2012

Problems With Contemporary Western Environmental Aesthetics, Yu Zhao

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

While environmental aesthetics has made a remarkable contribution for its innovation to contemporary Western aesthetics, the paper argues that some problems with the contemporary environmental aesthetics include the undefined boundaries when expanding the domain of aesthetic objects, self-contradiction when expanding the dimension of aesthetic experience, and overlook of the inherent characteristics of aesthetics as a discipline when emphasizing the relations between aesthetics and other disciplines. The paper cautions that the balance between the traditional concepts and contemporary development is an emergent issue for contemporary environmental aesthetics.

The Concept Of Subjectivity And The Body Image In Ancient Greek Aesthetics, Xiaohua Wang Nov 2012

The Concept Of Subjectivity And The Body Image In Ancient Greek Aesthetics, Xiaohua Wang

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

In the history of western aesthetics, the concept of subjectivity determines the construction of body image. As the concept of subjectivity varies, the body is accordingly represented as subject, object or subject-object. Since the generalized primitive schema of body was discarded, the construction of body image in Greek aesthetics developed in two directions, one being the understanding of body as a pure object, and the other being the understanding of body as taking the double role of subject and object. The former was represented by Socrates, Plato, Epictetus and Plotinus, while the latter was represented by Democritus, Aristotle, Epicurus and …

The Ethical Landscape In The Transformation Of Modernity In Shen Congwen'sBorder Town And After, Yan Chen Nov 2012

The Ethical Landscape In The Transformation Of Modernity In Shen Congwen'sBorder Town And After, Yan Chen

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Shen Congwen's writing of Xiangxi (the Western Hunan area) shifts its focus from legendary stories to history-directed experiences. The activities of his characters are put into the mosaic of historical experiences, so as to present the modern transformation of the ancient community life in the Western Hunan area. This transformation shows not only as the wonder and amazement in the psychological and conceptual dimensions but also as conflicts and crises in the power relations and moral order, as well as the resultant formation of an ethical landscape different from the traditional one. Although the criticism of modern urban civilization remains, …

The Dissemination Of American Deconstruction And Its Reception In China, Xiaoming Chen Nov 2012

The Dissemination Of American Deconstruction And Its Reception In China, Xiaoming Chen

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

This paper investigates how American deconstruction is received in China from 1980s and finds that American deconstruction has always been overshadowed by its French counterpart. The paper observes that deconstruction in China is disseminated with an emphasis on critical notion instead of technical analysis in the form of close reading. From the mid-1990s, American deconstruction begins to strengthen its spread and influence in China, while the deconstructive nature is downplayed due to its technical requirements in textual analysis when its dissemination works in framework of narratology. While the reaches of American deconstructive literary criticism need further investigation, the literary theory …

Zhu Guangqian And British Empiricist Tradition And His Revisions Over Benedetto Croce, Lang Jin Nov 2012

Zhu Guangqian And British Empiricist Tradition And His Revisions Over Benedetto Croce, Lang Jin

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

The British empiricist tradition is very important in Zhu Guangqian's aesthetics, which has become both the background for him to accept and the resource to revise Benedetto Croce. The study of the British associationist school on how associations worked helped to bypass the distinction made by formalistic aesthetics between aesthetic appreciation, science and morality, which also informed Zhu Guangqian's reflection over the relationship between literature and morality and led to Zhu's revision of the formalist aesthetics' overemphasis on the aesthetic autonomy. By integrating the British empiricist tradition with the spirit of Li and Yue in Chinese Confucian tradition, Zhu Guangqian …

The Jiayin Style Of Writing In A Europeanized Classical Chinese With Elasticity And Its Relation With The New Literature, Qingshu Meng Nov 2012

The Jiayin Style Of Writing In A Europeanized Classical Chinese With Elasticity And Its Relation With The New Literature, Qingshu Meng

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Jiayin style of writing was shown typically in the political essays in 1910s, and this linguistic style performed a new function of prose writings in the classical Chinese language at the time when the media of literature had changed. The style showed a different standpoint from the New Literature, but had profound historical link with it. The link showed in the common acceptance, interpretation and construction of modern disciplinary system and the shared pursuit of logicality of writing style and the grammar system. They had also adopted a commensurate strategy and mode of knowledge production, and had faced the same …

Towards A Thick Description Of Maoist Discourse: With Help From Zhao Shuli, Vukovich Daniel Nov 2012

Towards A Thick Description Of Maoist Discourse: With Help From Zhao Shuli, Vukovich Daniel

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

With a few exceptions much of the knowledge of modern China produced in the world either ignores or demonizes the Mao era. On the cultural front things are not much better, whether we are speaking of the "Seventeen-year's Literature" or the culture of the 1960s and 1970s. The negation of the Mao or radical era is, in short, a crucial part of contemporary Sinological-orientalism. There is however a recovery and reorientation project underway that seeks to restore the complexity of the Mao decades and its pursuit of an alternative, agrarian, and socialist modernity. As part of this project I offer …

On The Institutional Theory Of Art From The Perspective Of Cultural Sociology, Xiao Kuang Nov 2012

On The Institutional Theory Of Art From The Perspective Of Cultural Sociology, Xiao Kuang

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

The institutional theory of art originates from the analytical aestheticians' debates on the definition of art. The discussions round Arthur Danto's "artworld" and George Dickie's "institutional theory of art" signalize a transition of focus from the "essential property" to the "relational property" in aesthetics and shows some sociologically oriented features. Sociologists such as Howard Becker and Pierre Bourdieu proceed to examine the structural rules of art institutions from the perspective of cooperation and conflict, which breaks the boundaries of the traditional philosophy of art and has made significant contribution to the interdisciplinary integration and complementation between contemporary aesthetics and sociology.
