The 19th century saw significant increases in the number of Chinese immigrants entering North America, most significantly on the west coast of the United States. Already facing increasing divide amongst the American population over the issue of the Opium Wars and the resulting Opium-addiction amongst the Chinese, the United States found itself now confronting the problem in the form of immigrant workers. Although the Opium Wars and the issue of the Chinese Opium Dens were highly disputed outside the courts, the State and Federal courts surprisingly avoided discussing the topic in their legislative discussions surrounding the Chinese Exclusion Act of …

Cross-Grade Analysis Of Chinese Students' English Learning Motivation: A Mixed-Methods Study, Qian-Mei Zhang, Tae-Young Kim

This mixed-methods study investigated the changes in Chinese students’ motivation to learn English from elementary to high school and explored the reasons for these changes at different school levels. A motivational questionnaire was designed and administered to 3,777 elementary, junior high, and high school students, and followup interviews were then conducted with nine students in order to investigate their perceptions of their motivations. Seven subcomponents of motivation were identified. The statistical results revealed that junior high school students had the highest learning motivation, followed by those in elementary school and those in high school. Geppō 月報, journal‐like pamphlets issued within monographic sets, are important resources containing material that complements the volumes with which they are issued.1 Typical contents for geppō include: brief academic articles, chronologies, bibliographies, reminiscences‐as‐biographies, editorial notes, biographical sketches of contributors to the series, errata and corrigenda, tables of contents, indexes, and information about other volumes in the series. Despite their wealth of contents—much of which can be found only in these publications—geppō traditionally have been overlooked and underappreciated. The last two decades have seen more and more cities joining the competitions for hosting the Olympic Games, resulting in soaring investments, both public and private, in Olympic-related projects. The Olympic Games have become a two-week gigantic event with tremendous costs burdening host cities. Meanwhile, the last three decades have witnessed underused facilities and lack of financial support for maintenance of the Olympic venues after the Games. The authors present a comparison of the effects and contents of two traditional pieces—the Korean story, ”The Abandoned Princess,” and a story from the Blackfeet Native American Bullchild's The Sun Came Down—about how they console the dead and the living through songs and chanting from these two different cultures. The paper demonstrates the resemblance between mystic syllables narrated in a song by a Korean shaman and in a tale by a Native American elder, and how repeating words and following actions revive the souls of the deceased and the beleaguered. Some Korean and Navaho myths indicate the significance of the color yellow in building a strong foundation for society. For a new order such as a kingdom, a monastery and religion, even a new way of life, a yellow dragon may move to the center, but also—to spur growth of order in 12th c. and Kwanggaet’o myths—the dragon may meet his blue counterpart. Chinese As A Foreign Language (Cfl) Students’ Lexical Tonal Development: An Investigation Of Tonal Production And Awareness Of Tonal Categories, Li Jin

This paper reports on an empirical study examining the relationship between beginning-level CFL students’ tonal production and their awareness of lexical tonal categories. Additionally, it investigated CFL learners’ views about the relationship. A mixed method approach was adopted to collect and analyze both quantitative and qualitative data from 23 beginning-level English-speaking adult CFL learners. The quantitative results show that the participants’ accuracy of lexical tonal production was statistically significantly correlated to their awareness of tonal categories and their tonal production was statistically more accurate than their awareness of tonal categories. The qualitative findings show that the participants didn’t rely on …
