Avoiding The Subject: The Opium War, Opium-Markets, And The Exclusion Of Chinese Laborers In The United States, Canada, And Mexico, Olivia L. Blessing
Olivia L Blessing
The 19th century saw significant increases in the number of Chinese immigrants entering North America, most significantly on the west coast of the United States. Already facing increasing divide amongst the American population over the issue of the Opium Wars and the resulting Opium-addiction amongst the Chinese, the United States found itself now confronting the problem in the form of immigrant workers. Although the Opium Wars and the issue of the Chinese Opium Dens were highly disputed outside the courts, the State and Federal courts surprisingly avoided discussing the topic in their legislative discussions surrounding the Chinese Exclusion Act of …

Uncovering The Voice Of Asian American Youth In Young Adult Novels --Korean American Experiences, Ying-Bei Wang
Ying-bei Wang
In America, Young Adult fiction is a popular literature genre embraced by readers of all age. Its contents not only contain an educational purpose for its predominantly young readers but also offer a critical view of social and cultural issues. Most young adult novels narrate stories from the perspective of young protagonists, who are believed to be more candid and more likely to reveal their true experiences and thoughts. The young protagonists also feature a youthful innocence that could function as a powerful voice to criticize the corrupted adult world. This project seeks to understand the Asian American experiences by …

Geppō 月報, journal‐like pamphlets issued within monographic sets, are important resources containing material that complements the volumes with which they are issued.1 Typical contents for geppō include: brief academic articles, chronologies, bibliographies, reminiscences‐as‐biographies, editorial notes, biographical sketches of contributors to the series, errata and corrigenda, tables of contents, indexes, and information about other volumes in the series. Despite their wealth of contents—much of which can be found only in these publications—geppō traditionally have been overlooked and underappreciated. In many libraries, they have been lost or discarded. Based on an assessment of the current situation of geppō at the University of …
The Question Of Legacy And The 2008 Olympic Games: An Exploration Of Post-Games Utilization Of Olympic Sport Venues In Beijing, Xiaowei Yu
Xiaowei Yu
The last two decades have seen more and more cities joining the competitions for hosting the Olympic Games, resulting in soaring investments, both public and private, in Olympic-related projects. The Olympic Games have become a two-week gigantic event with tremendous costs burdening host cities. Meanwhile, the last three decades have witnessed underused facilities and lack of financial support for maintenance of the Olympic venues after the Games. Based on previous literature, the “white elephant” effect has happened in every Olympic city during the last twenty years. In terms of Beijing, scholars have yet to substantially investigate the post-Games utilization of …

China’S Strategic Priorities, Jonathan Ping, Brett Mccormick
Jonathan H. Ping
Identifying the most significant new issues and problems that have arisen from China’s rapid development, this book examines the development of China’s contemporary foreign policy and international relations. In doing so, it highlights the global importance of China’s management of its own politics and economics, and demonstrates how all nation-states have a vested interest—and to varying degrees are liable—for the consequences of Chinese actions. Born of interactions between senior Chinese military, government and academic individuals and ‘western’ academics, this book identifies the most pressing issues facing China today.

Yellow Dragon And Yellow Corn Girl: Some Colors In Korean And Navaho Mythology, Thomas Grove
Thomas N Grove
Some Korean and Navaho myths indicate the significance of the color yellow in building a strong foundation for society. For a new order such as a kingdom, a monastery and religion, even a new way of life, a yellow dragon may move to the center, but also—to spur growth of order in 12th c. and Kwanggaet’o myths—the dragon may meet his blue counterpart. Interaction between the two colors intensifies as a yellow and a blue dragon entwine in the shamanist myth of the Three Chesok Gods. Sometimes other entities bring the two colors into contact. In the very First World …
