This paper offers a historical overview of PR China’s relations with South Asia (from 1949 to the present). The South Asian region covering Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Burma/Myanmar has been attracting growing international attention in recent years. PR China has become one of the main external actors to involve itself in the region. In this respect, the paper addresses the main elements of PR China’s current relations with the South Asian states and offers several case studies of Beijing’s relations with the region.
