Identifying the most significant new issues and problems that have arisen from China’s rapid development, this book examines the development of China’s contemporary foreign policy and international relations. In doing so, it highlights the global importance of China’s management of its own politics and economics, and demonstrates how all nation-states have a vested interest—and to varying degrees are liable—for the consequences of Chinese actions. Born of interactions between senior Chinese military, government and academic individuals and ‘western’ academics, this book identifies the most pressing issues facing China today.

China’S Relations With South Asia: From Threat Avoidance To Development Opportunity, Jonathan Ping

This paper offers a historical overview of PR China’s relations with South Asia (from 1949 to the present). The South Asian region covering Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Burma/Myanmar has been attracting growing international attention in recent years. PR China has become one of the main external actors to involve itself in the region. In this respect, the paper addresses the main elements of PR China’s current relations with the South Asian states and offers several case studies of Beijing’s relations with the region.
