Dancing Through Film Musicals: Narratives In Motion, Dara Phillips
Dancing Through Film Musicals: Narratives In Motion, Dara Phillips
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to discover if and how dance communicates vital plot and character information nonverbally. The example analyzed was the film Singin’ in the Rain. This thesis examined the six dance sequences in the film to determine if the dancing is an integral, powerful, and significant communicative addition to the film. Walter Fisher’s Narrative Paradigm was used in conjunction with Seymour Chatman’s concept of kernels and satellites to determine if the dances communicated significantly to the film’s viewers. The Narrative Paradigm, though loosely framed, provided the concepts of coherence and fidelity. These concepts helped determine if …

This was the world premier of this ground breaking play. While there is a clear political agenda here, this is not agit-prop theatre. What Kia Corthron gives us are fully realized, complicated and complex people trying to grapple with the hard questions at the core of what it is to be human.

Originally titled Threes, its plot revolves around Bobby (a single man unable to commit fully to a steady relationship, let alone marriage), the five married couples who are his best friends, and his three girlfriends. Unlike most book musicals, which follow a clearly delineated plot, Company is a concept musical composed of short vignettes, presented in no particular chronological order, linked by a celebration for Bobby's 35th birthday.
Company was among the first musicals to deal with adult themes and relationships. As Sondheim puts it, "Broadway theater has been for many years supported by upper-middle-class people with …

Visiting The Past, Reclaiming The Present: The Africanisms Of Capoeira Angola, Juan Esteban Sosa
Visiting The Past, Reclaiming The Present: The Africanisms Of Capoeira Angola, Juan Esteban Sosa
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
A key puzzle for contemporary scholars is how capoeira originated but more importantly the way in which it has been transformed. Along these lines, this study focuses on what is most commonly referred to as the mother or the traditional form of capoeira, that is capoeira angola. This research will examine the africanisms of Capoeira Angola and the way in which they have been maintained throughout centuries of its existence. Accordingly, this study places great emphasis on reclaiming the roots and traditions of this art form that has been appropriated and incorporated into Brazilian commercial and mainstream culture. I conducted …

Fabled WOV, a seedy little New York radio station takes to the air at the beginning of World War II, this time to record a broadcast for the troops overseas.
The narrative concerns the harassed producer whose leading singer is often drunk, the delivery boy who wants a chance in front of the mike, the second banana who dreams of singing a ballad, and the trumpet-playing sound effects man who chooses a fighter plane over Glenn Miller. http://www.guidetomusicaltheatre.com/shows_n/1940sRadioHour.html

Mythological Intertextuality In Nineteenth Century Ballet Repertory, Liane Fisher
Mythological Intertextuality In Nineteenth Century Ballet Repertory, Liane Fisher
MALS Final Projects, 1995-2019
This paper will posit the idea that, while nineteenth century ballet purported to tum away from the mythological librettos that had graced the ballet stages of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, they actually maintained ties to their mythological heritage. After a brief review of a few pertinent classical Greek myths, we will look at two ballets from the early Romantic period: La Sylphide and Giselle, and finish with two from the late nineteenth century: Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake to discover what ties they retain to mythology.

One of showbusiness’s most classic and beloved tales, 42nd Street tells the story of Peggy Sawyer, a talented young performer with stars in her eyes who gets her big break on Broadway.
Peggy arrives to New York City from her hometown of Allentown, Pennsylvania, armed with her tap shoes and big dreams. Peggy’s talent catches the eye of legendary Broadway director Julian Marsh, who gives her a spot in the chorus of Pretty Lady, his newest show. Pretty Lady stars Dorothy Brock, the classic Broadway diva, who takes an instant dislike to the new girl in the cast. When …

Leaving Iowa, Otterbein University Theatre And Dance Department
Leaving Iowa, Otterbein University Theatre And Dance Department
2005-2006 Season
The spark behind Leaving Iowa comes from being children of parents from the now dubbed "greatest generation." The story is a toast to their idealism and character and a little roast of their undying dedication to the classic family road trip. More specifically, it is the story of Don Browning, a middle-aged writer, who returns home and decides to finally take his father's ashes to his childhood home, as requested. But when Don discovers Grandma's house is now a grocery store, he begins traveling across Iowa searching for a proper resting place for his father. This father-and-son road trip shifts …
