Soldier's Heart, Thomas Henry Pate Iv
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Soldier’s Heart is a collection of stories about Preston Henry, a Special Forces Operator, doing what he must to survive combat and what he must--a quest just as harrowing-- to find peace back home. The stories of Soldier’s Heart are interwoven in theme and plot, each story dovetailing with the next. It is a collection that shows not all war wounds can be seen.

This collection of short stories is trying to say something about empathy. It’s trying to connect with readers in an effort to convey some small kind of emotion the characters are experiencing. It’s about the difficulty we all have connecting and communicating with each other and ourselves.

In “The Humanist,” the strained relationship between a father and son becomes even more complicated when the son marries. In “Château Royale,” a young woman moves into a new home with a dark history. The final piece, “Starting After Midnight,” follows two young people in the aftermath of a one-night stand. All of everything is inside: Gatling guns and The Birth of Tragedy, Anne Rice and Taco Bell, kit foxes and sex tips. The answer is waiting. All you need to do is …

Witch Hazel Advent, The Story Of An Ozark Poet, Sarah Moore Chyrchel
Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Using equipment provided by the Lemke Department of Journalism at the University of Arkansas, I shot and edited a half hour long documentary film comprised of interviews and footage of John at his home near Winslow, Arkansas. John is a talented poet, and segments of his poetry are woven throughout the film.
The inspiration for this project is deeply rooted in place: the remote farmstead in the Boston Mountains of northwestern Arkansas that my grandparents called …
Marais Des Cygnes, John Michael Orr
Marais Des Cygnes, John Michael Orr
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This thesis documents the concept, process, installation, and specific pieces in my Master of Fine Arts thesis exhibition, Marais des Cygnes. The Marais des Cygnes is a river in southeast Kansas and western Missouri, near a Bleeding Kansas-era massacre site of the same name. The river is notorious for flash flooding, was named by French explorers and translates to Marsh of the Swans. The work is about a fictional wandering car thief and alcoholic named Vernon, the bad guy in my novel. Vernon is obsessed with the distant past, particularly the time before the Louisiana Purchase and the Louisiana of …
