The increasing wave of ethno-religious crises in the Nigeria polity had been a deep subject of concern to all stakeholders .Political scientists, religious leaders, legal experts, economic analysts and even the ordinary citizens have been alarmed by the devastating consequences that these increased ethno religious imbroglios had occasioned to the continued existence of the polity and cohesion of the Nigerian society. With the technological ability and pop-cultural fascination to record private moments and distribute them, poetry that reveals personal details and conflates the identity between speaker and author must feel the effects of what could be viewed as an over-saturation of the confessional—which was during the 1950s and 1960s with Robert Lowell, Anne Sexton, and Sylvia Plath a political, rebellious act. Mothers of Sparta is a collection of thirteen personal essays that examine place—knowing one’s place, and finding one’s place in the world. The narrative arc chronicles the narrator’s childhood, young adulthood, marriage and child rearing years, ultimately encompassing the difficulties of raising a child who, due to brain damage, faces an uncertain future.
